Sadly, this system is more profitable for the committee and the studio management. With less show to make there's less money involved. There's a rare studio like Kyoto animation that cares about their staff and quality. But since anime on its own is no longer a big profit maker since Bluray sales had been dropping and well anime, in general, had been a glorified advertisement for its manga counterpart this is the only way for the studio to survive.

*cough cough* studio Mappa. I still don't know if they are paying their animators fairly, especially with the amount of high-end and popular anime. Anime upon anime, I really hope they become like studio trigger and Kyoto studio where they can support their animators. If the industry doesn't change I think Japanese animation would die down and Chinese animation would become the new niche.

It's kind of an iffy situation though. You see, there are a pretty decent amount of animators that are paid well enough to have good lives, but those are the salaried positions. Animation Studios quite often outsource to freelancers or do what is essentially a paid internship. If you're able to prove yourself as either a reliable artist/animator, or you have displayed insane skill that can't be passed up regardless of your reliability as an employee, you can get one of those salaried positions. The sleep issue is a different thing. It's not just the animators, literally everyone on the production team of an anime is overworked, just watch a recent interview with the director of AoT's final season and pay attention to the awful bags under his eyes. This part sadly doesn't have a solution or necessarily a bright side to it. Once you look at the information for a while, you realize that the pay for salaried employees at bigger Studios isn't as bad as many people think (it's not great, but it's not the BS "salaried employees only get two dollars per hour" thing that people say). The real issue is the overworking and sleep deprivation situation, because the thing is, you don't really need much money in your pocket to sit at a desk all day, sure you deserve the money and you have earned the right to it, but I think it's bad that people think of this as a money issue for the employees when it's much more of a schedule issue.

Something that I dont understand is mappa hiding the linework of the drawings, there is some kind of filtering that's happening within the compositing, that seems to be making the images look more "blurry", in comparission to Wit Sutdio's version. Perhaps this was a decision to unify the look of the 3d and 2d animation better. The backgrounds themselves often times won't stand out because of this.

What I love about Araki's direction is that in action scenes, even stills are used to great effect. Even though they are primarily designed as a cost-saving measure, their execution is fantastic. They are usually accompanied by overlaid speed lines on the side of the screen, a crash zoom/speed pan and a BIG sound effect. All these together morph the still into something more akin to an impact shot rather than a cost saving measure. However, Hayashi's direction so far has not used anything like this. His stills are mostly... stills, and none are used in action, which is valuable in itself, but I wouldn't be complaining usually apart from the fact that there are some woefully janky animated shots in the series that honestly, would've been better left with the illusion of movement. For example, Eren's elbow drop into the crowds in Episode 6 only seemed to contain the end of his fall, and didn't emphasize him in the air. A still of him in midair placed in between the shots, coupled with some more impact sound effects could've helped sell the scene better.

If you hear or read anybody dissing MAPPA for their work on AoT season 4, link them here. You cannot expect a new studio to suddenly inherit the methods and direction of a studio that worked on it for several years. You cannot expect to stop a car that has been moving on 6th gear and transfer to another car and expect it to jump straight into the 6th gear. I've read some comments saying that MAPPA had no excuse to not be at a similar level that WIT was during their time. Not gonna lie, those comments were annoying. So thanks for this video. This the go-to for deep dives into animation studios. If there's one thing I've learned from this channel, it's that amazing animated shows and ridiculous labor demands are two sides of the same coin.

It would've been great for no studio to take it because of bad scheduling, because then we'd get season 4 in 2 years instead of 1, but beautifully done. I'd take quality over speed any day. And so would majority of fans. (And yes, s4 would've been done eventually because it's a money maker)

Criticize them for choosing to take on the work load and more relevant stuff. Don't diss them because they decided not to kill their animators in the process by incorporating 3D characters in the limited time that they had. Production team should not have kept the same ridiculous schedule after WIT walked away from the scene. You're not wrong though. Criticism is fine of course. I just don't think I can call some of them criticism if they had no real understanding of what goes on behind the scenes and just typed in whatever insulting comment they can think of. The manga is the big moneymaker for the franchise, so animating years later would definitely bring fewer profits for the production committee. They elevated Isayama's work to whole another level. The texture and polish over titans and amazing colour palette that changed along with tone of arcs. Watching S4 all I had was disappointment. It didn't look terrible over-all it was fine. But just 'fine' isn't something I consider AOT should deserve. S4 was pretty rough and that's that. No matter how good a CG is it always look jarring and lack the weight both in action sequences and facial expressions. I sympathize with the staff who had to go through such tough time constraints because of higher ups at Mappa and got shit on by people even though it wasn't their fault. People saying it getting a movie by the end is good rumour but I think that's just prolonged suffering for the animators. @@thelegacyofgaming2928 Honestly I was barely aware of the CGI at all the whole series until the Colossal Titan’s scenes in Perfect Game which went back and forth between being a weird CGI blob to a detailed hand drawn Titan.....that was strangely proportioned in its scenes to the point of looking like 7-8 times taller than Eren’s Titan despite only actual being about 4 times its size. Maybe that was more an issue with Eren’s Titan, I’m not sure. Honestly Eren’s Titan looked rather weird in his fight with the Armored Titan a couple episodes prior as well. Keep in mind these are all nitpicks in my mind than only barely detract from my enjoyment of the show, but I do think it’s worth mentioning that while WIT’s use of CGI was far less noticeable to me early on in the series, that doesn’t mean they were flawless. Season 3 Part 2 is remembered for its standout scenes involving Levi, the Beast Titan, and the ocean, but there were quite a few parts where the animation was less than stellar that people seem to have completely forgotten in their crusade to hate on MAPPA. Nothing in S4 has felt as odd to me as the sudden change in character models from the Basement episode, well okay maybe the Beast Titan did but that’s really the only major problem I have. I think MAPPA’s style shines in episodes like Midnight Train, Deceiver and Sole Salvation where it’s all about the emotional character interactions and dialogues, which to me is why episodes like Declaration of War and Children of the Forest are so loved while some of the more action focused scenes are where people start having complaints. MAPPA and Kodansha just did not give their team the time necessary to animate these action pieces to the same standard that they been handled before. I don’t blame the animators for this, and people harassing them or calling MAPPA as a whole trash are toxic as hell and need to be purged from the fandom. But the higher ups at Kodansha and those at MAPPA who accepted this project despite knowing they didn’t have enough time, the ones who made these situations as difficult for the animators as it is fair game in my opinion, they absolutely did prioritize money over quality. I still think production wise the season has looked incredibly good but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t extremely glad that Part 2 is getting more time, because Part 1 simply did not have the polish that fans of this series have come to expect, this truth cannot be denied.

Just look at other Mappa products and it's not hard to see they take their time when possible. They aren't looking for a big backlash due to overwork of staff. So yeah, pretty big chance they will take their time more for the next part.

The only problem of CGI i have with the MAPPA final season is Eren's titan. All the other titans are great. Especially the Warhammer titan and the armored titan. Eren's titan looks too much like a stiff rubber dummy with fake muscles. I think it's the lack of any texture/fur/armor that's usually on all the other titans that makes Eren's look pretty bad.

That show was handled by Section 5 lead by animation producer Kawaguchi Toru (previous works: Ghost Hound, xxxHOLiC, Sky Crawlers, Blood-C). At IG it seems that usually "animation producers" like Kawaguchi and Nakatake cover only one section at the time while "producers" like Wada produce works for more than one section at the time. Not sure how it's now since I noticed Kuroki Rui has been working on multiple shows at once for some time now as an "animation producer".

Section 6's portfolio sure was great, besides Guilty Crown, Kimi ni Todoke and Sengoku Basara they created Real Drive and Le Chevalier D'Eon which are both not really that known and are quite underrated shows. That said, the most impressive section was section 9 as they created Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Seirei no Moribito and Eden of the East.

Why the hell do you do a first season, and even put post-credit scenes at the end of the season, if you know that you don't want to and that you're not going to do a second season? Or a kind of continuation ...
