As a lifetime fly fisherman and guide in oregon, you are correct, not many do what you do or can do what you do. This is a graduate school for fly fishers. And this is a masterclass in spot and stalk fly hunting. If i had more then two thumbs those would be up to 👍. A big part of fishing this way is having the right kind of place to fish like this! Never tell anyone where you are I have a spot 15 minutes from my house that i fish 2 or 3 times a year and the fish almost have names at this point. It so rare in the age of social media to have a place like that and i dont tell anyone about it. I dont name it, i dont post pics with that new crap that can find where your at, its just for me. And its truly a little slice of heaven. Im the only one who fishes the creek and the only one who knows what lives in there. And they go to 25-26 and the biggest was 9 lbs. So far......

Hi, thank you for that. There's really nothing better in life than these moments and unbeknownst to most people they are far more commonly available (not this specific kind of creek, rather, the style of fishing and breakdown) than most think. Allowing time for a stream to unfold, show itself... as you know, it just shows when you allow it and then there's nothing better :) But it's great to have these little spots and yours sound right up our alley and ours right up yours :) The one thing I'll never understand is - the ppl that have to know exactly where you are or even what creek... literally every bank of every stream or river in Alberta has these fish and, more to the point, how is chasing another person's magic in any way, shape or form of value to me if I helicopter myself in just to have a photo with the next person's fish? How does that ever scratch the satisfactory itch? But, 95% do it. If we hear of where someone's magic happened we avoid it altogether or fish it when the opportunity arises to fish with that person. Even at that, once you know, you know, and the world gets a little bit smaller when you do. And knowing in a smaller world leaves less of it to dream about.

That dog is the land owner's pup and was just doing what he does, poke around and enjoy life. Timing is simply amazing in life - sometimes to the good and sometimes not! It tends to balance out and this was just a little lucky break that allowed that one to happen :)

Glad comments are back on! I'd worried that it was because of those negative comments. That Dave moment at 38:55 was awesome!

What a fantastic journey this was. I watched the first part also, but I'll comment on this one. That was brilliant of Amelia to give you this day on this beautiful creek of yours. There were so many cool moments with the fish, but as always, the filming of the whole lead up to your approach is second to none. The tactics that you put into it. I take all the small things in. I find that so enduring to listen to as much as seeing you get onto a good fish, if not more. Such as having a timer on when a fish will return on its beat while in the meantime sitting down having some lunch. I enjoy that detail in your content. It's the whole experience. At the end there I can most definitely hear some emotion in your voice there, and I was right along there with ya even from little old New Zealand here. I totally get why. And you deserve all the support you get. You put in so much hard work. Like you mention, you bust your ass to get someone onto a fish by giving it your best. There's always going to be critics out there on social media. But the majority that gets fly fishing for what it is, then they should know you only want the best for everyone. You share your passion for that very good reason. Constructive criticism, at times, will only make him or her a better angler at the end of the day. You can never stop learning. That's why I find the sport so engaging.. OMG I still can't stop chuckling at that porky pig moment haha. That, tha.. tha.. tha.. that's the fish 😂

Finally home from NZ and not sick like we were the last week there... with Covid #s doing what they have been in Canterbury I suspect we hit that last variant.... this was a special to me day for sure, but equally special in giving away by AJ. We really tried to tie in the how and share the cadence and pace. In fact, this week's video does it well but next week's video REALLY shares the lead up to the ONE cast that it takes when it all goes well and flows as we can. And, funnily enough, one segment of next week's video (I just edited it so it's fresh) talks about "if I can't give you my best, I'm out".... I don't like mailing it in. THAT all said the switch to this particular style of video that invites everyone in on the thought process and successes and failures and the why behind the try and the success/failure, is a big step but finally one so natural. :) Thank you for taking the time to share. There are literally dozens of anglers watching this video focused on the ability to find the EXACT spot I'm standing in, comparing the drone to google earth. This video is for anglers and helping others with the tactics as shared, while at the same time is a set up video to a couple of different series' videos coming later this season. :)

I’m always curious about the life expectancy of a large brown in a creek like this. I know it’s dependent on a number of variables, but what have your observations been fishing the same pools with likely the same fish for a number of years? Thank you for the great video!

it is quite species dependent, water temperature/habitat dependent, growth rate stress dependent... the brown in the feature image has been caught 7 years running and was 22" at first encounter - meaning that brown is about 12 years old. That's pretty old for stream browns but protected by the generally cold water habitat of the northerly location and the springs. Typically browns are 6 to 10 years. Much older can occur in cold or slower growing environs. Cutthroat trout tend to share that 6 to 10 yr range but again, I know the central Alberta Ram R drainage has showed cutts living to 22 to 24 years - again, cold water. Bull trout may not mature sexually for 5 to 7 years and live 25 to 30+ years. Rainbows... similar to cutts. In warmer locations with growth stress and higher susceptibility to disease trout tend closer to the median ages, tho their sizes tend to be similar as older aged fish in colder waters. Hope that helps?

Hmmm, honestly RIGHT now I'd put that era well ahead. F&W wanted to open the creek up to migrating/spawning browns for the main river and blew up the old beaverponds about 6 years back. Guess what they did instead? Nuked the #s and the biggest fish habitat. That + the main river is about 3m from the top end of this creek now and one of the next high water events it could be wiped off the face of the planet. Funny little things these. Enjoy them while here :)

Hey, love the video(s)! When fishing a creek like this that runs straight through someone’s land do you ask permission? Or just stick to the banks since owners don’t typically have rights to the stream bed here in AB? In this case I suppose you may also know the owners given the amount of time you’ve spent fishing here. Thanks

ALL of these streams are really tricky. When we took on the publishing of the Alberta Fishing Guide Magazine after my friend Barry Mitchell passed, I made sure that in the regions of these streams through central Alberta to state "It is IMPOSSIBLE to fish these waters without getting out of the creek, hence, it is imperative for your enjoyment and to respect landowners rights that you approach them for permission" or something to that effect. It is truly impossible to fish any of these kinds of waters legally in the high water mark given that we're forced to step onto dry land time to time. So, definitely knock on doors, ask, get to know the people. Most are friendly when you take the time and if your give-a-shit-o-meter is beyond your wants and rush, things are ok. The other thing I'll comment is that just because you asked today, make sure you continue to ask and develop good communication relations trip to trip or year to year if you go back. We admittedly had one incident through the years where we had long-term access but something popped up with the son and he lost his $%$% - we hadn't called or stopped by in a few years and went for a fish. Covid and time changed some things and while we got the boot we were certainly able to re-kindle a bit with dad. That's on us for not clarifying though and the land-owners rights are always... right. It was the first time that's happened but the lesson is to make sure communication is solid. It's best to avoid that and usually easy... a yes is with whatever conditions given and no... is no. All the best.
