How about 'U know What's Up' by Donell Jones?
Great tutorial. This songs become so much more of a beast when you realize Charlie Hunter played the bass, melody AND THE SOLO on the same instrument at the same time!
the 90s were a great time for soul music. so many new sounds and attitudes. D'Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu ... and acid jazz in the UK. seemed like every week, we got something new.

Soulquestrians working out of Electric Lady Studios at the same times gave us Mamas Gun, Voodoo, Like Water for Chocolate, and Things Fall Apart. Would have been amazing to witness that.
Really nice to see more Soul/Funk/Gospel oriented stuff

Black music is popular music
More groove based stuff like this, please!
Excellent, please more D'Angelo.
You really have great musicality, very tasteful playing. I say it again but I'd totally buy a rnb, neo soul-ish, funk piano course on open studio if you teach it

I mean, this video is basically already it but on a few more songs and some soloing exercises, that'd be cool
Great video. Been loving the new series of videos from Peter.
Awesome video. more D'Angelo pls
more dangelo please! my favorite musician of all time learning his songs have taught me so much. Amazing video !
One of my favorite tracks. This is gold right here. Much appreciated!
We need more of this @pianopeter! more D'Angelo and Gospel Stuff. Been following your channel for years, love everything you guys do
Wow, just as I started listening to him again! Probably one of my favorites from him.
This is straight 🔥 I've always had challenges in soloing and comping but this will greatly enhance my ability to do so. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏾
Love This! Hopefully, you will do a series !
Thank you so much Peter...can't wait to try this out. You're awesome man!
Knowledgeable, digestible, and with true attention to detail. Viva Peter & Open Studio!
This is the best piano video on KZread…great job🎹
Just love those funky jazz vamps❤ Great lesson.
This is gold for me, you got me going for a long time, thanks so much!
I remember when the voodoalbum came out, spanish joint went on repeat. Never thought it could work as a solopiece, but it works really well. Thanks for the inspiration.
Quite the groove masterclass from Peter here...
Such a wealth of knowledge. The best video you have put out. This is the best sounding rhodes ever!
One of my favorite songs of all time!
absolutely love all of the open studio vids. I've only been following for a few months and have already seen an enormous improvement in a few areas. Just a thought: an overhead view of the Rhodes instead of from the side would make learning fingerings easier in my opinion. Thanks Peter and Adam!
Great, great teaching
Peter! I'm in rehearsal for a gig with my band and your name comes up during rehearsal 🎶. James Ward, Bassist says PETER MARTIN. I knew him from back in school. He stood this high... he puts his hand mid chest. I said, I LOVE Peter. That's my boy! You are the man. Crazy love from KC out to you and Adam. So much content, this little jazz flute/vocalist loves your content. Outstanding content... big fan! Loving this post... you got that Groove authority Thang. Yes baby.

Very cool tutorial as usual! Thank you so much.
absolutely nailed it
plz do more on the neo-soul classics!🔥
Nailed it - such a good tutorial.
someone may passively watch this and believe its easy sitting down to do it and sound nearly as good as what you present is a challenge thanks for your contribution to online music learning fr man
This was a great breakdown!
you are awesome! More D’Angelo plz!!!❤❤
Thank youuuuuuu my favourite artist
Showing my piano teacher this. Thank you for being brilliant
Fantastic.
Peter you play better on this than some of the greatest masters ever i stg everything about every one of your lessons is present in your demonstrations. I aspire to learn everything you teach and play with as much clarity as this i mean better than the greatest masters you are truly the greatest jazz master of your generation and this video utterly proves it
Real nice brother. Thank you
Peter, this was perfect! I’ve been loving your Elements of Jazz course, and this video has me dying for an Elements of Funk/Neosoul/Groove follow up! Herbie, George Duke, Zawinul, Joe Sample… keep that beautiful Vintage Vibe humming, please! :-)

Way to get Joe Sample in there - The Crusaders had some mad soul.
Hey Peter! I love your videos, especially your fun tutorials like the Stevie wonder one and little fun rants like you talking about Hargrove and griffin. Could you do a video on Ahmad Jamal's specifically Rhodes or piano playing, I don't hear a lot of It talked about even though he has been really influential ever since he started playing. big ups team at open studio 😁😁😁
Beautiful, Rhodes sound!
All I can say is...YES!!!!! Thanks, appreciate it.
Dude THANK YOU.
brilliant
Fun fact here, Guitar and bass are played by Charlie Hunter in this song (at the same time)
Nice, thanks
so talented....
Cool 👌 thank you
Technician; thanks for that breakdown.
So sick
Having so much fun playing this 😁. Not much talking at all. Just gigging hard 🎹!!!
Fire!!!!!!!
yes
On my old stage model 73 my pedal is in constant movement so I feel ya and yes I use my pedal to much
PLS do next!! more RnB,Neo soul,Funk,Groove!!
DUDE!
What year is the Rhodes? Sounds like a 74’ 75’? Also fantastic teaching style. You have that positivity that makes anyone watching think they can do it.

The piano is not an antique Rhodes. It's a vintage vibe electric piano. New electromechanical piano in the same style but with a few more modern touches. Think of it like the Rhodes' grandkids. He intros the piano at length in another video they've put out
💯
yeahhhhhh
Please Do ‘Another Life’ by D’Angelo, and ‘Sometimes’ by Bilal!!
Great lesson, very useful, and Peter really sounds wonderful. One thing : It's a detail, but on the chorus (or bridge, whatever you want to call it) it seems to me the 2nd degree is a flat II (Db7), and not a normal ii half-diminished (d 1/2dim)... or am I hearing things ?
You’re invited to the cookout

Those books are bugging me tho, I'll drive down to St. Louis and tidy up those shelves it's all good
How do you get the fingering of that hit right? Feel like I don't have enough fingers 😐

That's some dirrrrrrty grove. Absolutely filthy!

Great stuff, maybe someone can help me with a doubt: why does he talk about C pentatonic? He clearly uses a Fm pentatonic, sometimes blues... I don't get it...thanks
@brunoharter3922
Жыл бұрын
He’s mainly using the Cminor pentatonic (C - Eb - F - G - Bb) and adding the blue note (F#). But then he also plays some other pentatonics during the changes, like Fm penta or even G pentatonic to highlight the natural B.
Sickness! If ppl havent heard his solo acoustic piano version of this youre missing out.
Yeah man, this is that sh*t. I have a bootleg of D’Angelo playing this and “Africa” solo on piano.
Love this Breakdown. I am not a musician and don't understand notes etc., but this helps while listening to the song. Is Spanish Joint a Classic? and is D'Angelo a musical genius? 🎹
