From Season 2, Episode 10 "Over"
Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.

    With every second that passed, Walt grew angrier and angrier that he couldn't share any interesting stories with his son, and his only use in that situation was filling up Hank's glass like a waiter. You could tell it was killing him inside to not be able to connect with his son the way Hank could.

    To add on, you also notice that all people have their set failures when it comes to doing what they want and usually it does not stop them from achieving their goals, however Walter ignores that. His disturbed pride of coming from a poor background and engaging with a rich, smart woman like Gretchen decades back kept him from pursuing his goal, and he egotistically skipped out being a potential millionaire and its bcz of that failure he never ascended past being a HS chemistry teacher and always regrets leaving Gray Matter deep down, cause a story of success would topple all of Hanks DEA escapade stories. Even when Hank failed in the special forces feild, he doesn’t feel sorry for himself, he moves on and even reminisces with Flynn as a gesture of confidence. Walter has none and the only one that’s worthy to mention is how he paid his treatment with meth money, yet he had to act like Elliot n Gretchen are too b honored😂

  • @DrProfSir

    @DrProfSir

    he couldnt. hank was telling a gruesome story from his time as a DEA agent and while Walt has plenty of stories from selling meth, he cant tell them. this is entirely his fault he cant connect with his kid. it goes along with the theme of the show and the downfall of his character. his family never asked for him to do what he did, they asked for him to be a good father/husband.

    @@A1_Amir The hell of it is, Walt could've probably gotten back on the saddle by just asking Elliot and Gretchen to give him a job, even without the cancer. Sure, they'd never give Walt power he used to have in the Gray Matter when it started, but I'm willing to bet they'd give Walt a lab to run and some challenging projects. But no, he couldn't do that, because it would've been "humiliating." So he'd rather cook up a made up story that he was conned by them, anything to avoid admitting it was he who made a mistake by letting his insecurites and ego to rule his life.

    1:45 the look of pure disgust on walts face is so telling. He fully realizes how much more Flynn looks up to his uncle vs his dad. Walt pours the shot for his son and who does he look at? Hank. Flynn takes the shot and immediately looks to hank asking him questions a son should ask his father, not his uncle. I think Walt sadistically punished his son for thinking hank was more a “man” than he was. Edit: appreciate all the comments! As I watch this more I like to think in an alternate breaking bad universe Walt asks Hank to step away from the table as he would like a moment with his son. Walt pours them each a shot of tequila and let’s him know how much he loves his son and is so happy he has more time to spend with him. Walt then does the ultimate cannonball into the pool and everybody jumps in

I can explain the different meaning of the collors to late if you want :) now back to the pools, the short awnser is the more money and power you have in the criminal world/world, the bigger the pool. It’s a symbol of the different levels of wealth and status. You can see that almost all caracters in the series have pools and they all have different sizes depending of how much power and money they have, Don eladio had the biggest pool, Walt had the smallest. It’s still facinating to think about how many years of work and how big the empire Walt was able to burn to the ground that fast, and that he did it out of hurt pride and ego makes it more dangerous to think about haha :D sorry for rambling on and on there and for bad English :D I just really like this show and all the hidden sublimital messages :D

Walt Jr doesn’t really care about how Hank tried to stop it and I don’t think the whole point of this scene was to make sure that Jr respected Walt more than Hank. I think it was more to show how Walt didn’t like how inferior he felt in that moment seeing how much Jr admired Hank compared to his own father. That’s why Walt poured Jr a drink to show that he could be badass too and then flipped on Hank after Hank tried to stop him. It’s why he didn’t help Jr when he started puking too. Walt just cared about being in power and it’s what he got when he stood up and scared Hank. He realized he had shifted the power back to him, causing him to sit back and smile while sipping his drink, hearing his son puke in the background while his wife and brother-in-law tried helping him out.

Then with this party he feels himself reverting back to the meek Walt persona we saw in The Pilot. He didn't want to return to being the unnoticed, weak, insignificant guy while Hank was the life of the party again. If Walt is healthy he blends into the background again and has less of an excuse to be a criminal in his mind. Hank bonding with Junior just rubbed salt in the wound. Obviously Bryan Cranston is incredible, but man Dean Norris *really* caught me off guard when I first watched this series. His character was just that typical annoying boomer that we all have in our lives, but over the course of the show he becomes soooo complex & you become extremely sympathetic toward him. Obviously that’s because of incredible writing but his acting just makes it perfect.

  • @austinboylan5476

    @austinboylan5476

    Actually in an interview, Vince Gilligan confirmed Dean Norris is the reason Hank became as complex as he was. He was initially written very schematic as you say, but because Dean Norris is apparently a very smart and eloquent person, they just naturally started writing Hank that way too (he said it was never even a discussion, it just subconsciously happened).

    Gonna be honest, I didn’t realize Walt was drunk when watching this scene like the other comments are mentioning. I thought it was pretty clear that this scene was to show how Walt didn’t like how powerless he felt as he watched his son look up to Hank and was clear and sober in mind about his thoughts in that moment. Plus, showing how much Heisenberg was bleeding into his normal life, like in the scene where he starts talking to the person buying drug stuff at the hardware store in this episode or the next one. Walt didn’t like how the power had shifted, making Walt feel inferior as he watched his son care so much about what Hank had to say. That’s why Walt didn’t help Walt Jr when he started puking in the pool. I don’t think he really cared what Walt Jr was doing, he just cared about the power shift. That’s why he went backing to drinking with a smug smile after sizing up Hank. Walt knew that Hank was scared in that moment. And that made him feel good

    The scene before this one, when everyone’s inside the house and Skyler was making a toast. Walt seemed fine I guess (not entirely) but he was playing a long with everything until Skyler mentioned in her toast Gretchen and Elliot, and thanked them for “paying” most of the treatment (which I found unnecessary to mention to be honest) and in that moment Walt’s face changed, and pride and ego took over him. Which I really think that led to the behavior of Walt on this scene! My point of view!
