Bread Machine Mixes for the Trail
After using my new bread machine for the past two months, I now want to use it on our trailer trips, so I made up some mixes to make baking bread in the bread machine in our trailer very easy. We mix up and bake one of the mixes in this video.

We have a Class B camper van RV (built on the Ford Transit base, which can be parked in a regular parking space). We can put either a bread machine or a crock pot in the sink and bake or cook even while driving. The smallest ones do best, because they are low watt and low weight. Crockpot has a 2.5 qt model with latches. If on low, one can do this in a crock pot liner, leaving nothing to clean. Also, when one buys mixes for bread machines in Germany, the yeast is mixed right in with the flour, so it's probably not necessary to keep these things separate. Also possible to bake bread in a crock pot. And some of us use bread machines to make soup, main dishes, etc.

Great ideas--thank you.
I think it would also just be great to pre measure and keep containers like these or in regular Quarts jars on the shelf for really busy days when you have the crockpot going. Imagine a nice warm Crockpot meal & fresh bread on a super busy day! Now that’s being WONDER WOMAN! Lol

How beautifully you stated that. Thank you!
There is a trick that you can do with the canning jars so they don’t break. Take old socks cut the toe out of them and slide them onto the jars. I used to do that when we bought milk from a lady and never lost a jar to breakage. Now we have our own cow and I still use the trick with the socks.

We have the same BM. Bought it via your link a bit ago. Great machine. Thank you for the review. Like you, we’re new to this gizmo but it’s been fun experimenting. We bought it for summertime baking, but hv since used it for mixing when we’re busy. Glad to report that we have SUCCESS making sourdough in it! Our own starter & recipe, mix in BM*, put pan in refr to proof overnight, bake next day. Allow pan to come to room temp prior to baking. Excellent results! Wish the bake cycle had crust color options. Looking forward to seeing how you power the BM on the road.

When I make my bread I mix up 6 and put in baggies and store in my fridge. I just put the wet then the flour mix and put the yeast on top. I dust out the bags and store till I need to make mixes again.

I make up 2 months of bread machine mixes that include all the dry ingredients except the yeast. Way less messy when it’s time to bake it in the machine. Mine are in deflating zipper bags and I just reuse them.

You can fill with the insert outside the machine to not spill on the machine. If you do, close the lid so you don't accidentally put ingredients in there without the insert. Trrrrust me.😅 😅😅

Thanks for the bread machine info and the dry bread mixes download. I love the idea of videos on car trips as I don't own a travel trailer or RV and my idea of camping is a hotel or motel, but do like to take 1-3 day trips to visit family or sight-see across the country. So glad you will be getting to make some new adventures soon. I'm looking forward to your bread book!!! It is so helpful to actually see you make the bread and happy that you showed the one with dehydrated/freeze-dried ingredients especially. Good reminder about the yeast! Baking bread the old-fashioned way has it's time and place, but letting a machine do the work is wise for a variety of reasons sometimes and we're excited to do more. I'm going to get the Komo Mio soon and not keep the bought flour on hand too much. I also would like to see you make some skillet bread recipes in a jar for quick sandwiches. (Hillbilly Kitchen has some videos on that and biscuits so you know what I'm talking about) Thank you for all the hard work and the knowledge you share!! Happy camping!

Thanks for your comments! I will check out some recipes for skillet breads.
You graciously answered request on Redrose for me regarding making doll rye bread. Now may I ask how would you do it in the bread machine?
I've mixed the yeast into my flour for years. Recently I've started mixing the yeast with the salt and water. Yes it's fine to mix the salt and yeast together, salt doesn't kill or stop the growth of the yeast in any way. I have nevertheless baked the bread in the machine. I prefer to use it as a mixer/ proofer. I have 4 bread machines along with a classic Kitchen Aid stand mixer. I'm a long time bread baker with 35 years of experience.

I've done the "Rustic Italian" recipe at 2 lbs several times. It does not get overly high. It's fine. I haven't done the white, so maybe that is less dense and rises a bit more.

Do you know if this bread maker makes cornbread?
I don't have access to freeze dryed anything. I can buy powered buttermilk, and maybe I could dehydrate cheese, but what would you recommend as a substitute for the green chilis? I have my mother in laws bread maker that is around 30 years old. I have never used it. I don't have recipes for it. I will be checking out the bread machine you use.

You could use a fresh jalapeno, if you prefer. You could even just pack the regular dry ingredients in the jars and then add fresh cheese and buttermilk when ready to mix up.
It looks like the best bread mixes you could use! I have seen mixes in the store, but some of the ingredients I would not want to eat! I tried one once, but the bread tasted terrible, and did not rise well. I think it was too old.

@trailgrazers3690

It is best to use instant yeast--most recipes are developed to use that yeast. "Bread machine yeast" is the same thing as instant yeast, so don't pay extra!

You make a very good point, and one that I considered as well. I have certainly baked at home and simply packed the bread in the trailer for our meals. If that is the most convenient way for you, then do it. I will still do it that way some of the time. I just love to experiment with new things and think it would be fun to bake at camp!
Store bought bread compared to home made bread.... No compare.... Home made bread is best hands down.
