Brass Inlay in Steel // Metal Inlay Techniques: Brass Inlay in Metal Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Have you seen projects before where there has been brass wire inlay in metal? In this video on metal inlay techniques, I show you the basics of brass inlay in steel.

In this wire inlay tutorial, I cover the process to do brass inlay in steel. There are a variety of wire inlay patterns you could do. You could make your own wire inlay designs, or you could google them. Copper inlays are similar to just about any soft metal wire inlay that you would want to do an inlay.
All my wire inlay chisels are handmade. You can create your own wire inlay tools to use for the processes. Wire inlay supplies can also probably be purchased on the internet.
I hope you enjoy this video on how to inlay metal into metal. What type of metal inlay do you like to do? What type of inlay metal into metal do you do? Thanks for watching!

Just stumbled onto your videos, looks like lots on good info is on your channel.... i was going to do this to my straight Razors, I was thinking the plan through and realized I would need to heat treat afterward.... I don’t think it would be a good idea to put the wire in before hand so I figure I could cut the groove, heat treat the steel then inlay the wire. Let me know if that would work, I almost think the heat treatment would contract the groove... but what do I know lik

  • @supersupernova74

2nd what Irish Craftsman said. This will be a very useful technique. Question, the first double cut you made that was too wide...would it hold a double wrap of the wire or no? I suppose I should test it out for myself. Would make a nice embellishment with a double wrap bracketed by a pair of singles. May even have to attempt to inlay a Celtic rope wrap if I can figure out how to overlap and stick the wire successfully. Once again, thank you...for this and all the other instructional videos. You my young brother are a good man.

+Kenny McCoy thank you very much for all your compliments! The double wide or the two wide line first cut can be used with a twisted wire or braided wire or a thicker piece of soft material. Keeping everything together in a wider slot is a little more difficult but doable. My mentor Tom Latane name showed Me how to do a braided inlay and that was pretty sweet looking I would love to see the Celtic thing in an inlay :-) God bless you and thank you once again have a great weekend

I don't think so. Those non ferrous metals have a melting point that is lower than what I think a good quenching heat would be. And if it didn't all melt down in the fire, I don't think it would survive the rapid cooling in the quench either.

What if a guy chiseled a pattern into a piece, laid wire down into the grooves, and then chucked it into the forge until the soft metal melted down into the grooves? It seems to me like this would be possible in the O2 free environment of a gas forge, reducing fire if need be, or even with a flux coated rod. I think i'm going to try it, but maybe you'd like to try it here too?

This method causes a loss of control of width when you get down past the very top surface. Only appropriate on a very crude or primitive object. On a fine knife or other tool, it would ruin the aesthetic. Use caution where you use it.
