Brass: Birmingham is an economic strategy game sequel to Martin Wallace' 2007 masterpiece, Brass. Birmingham tells the story of competing entrepreneurs in Birmingham during the industrial revolution, between the years of 1770-1870.
As in its predecessor, you must develop, build, and establish your industries and network, in an effort to exploit low or high market demands.
Each round, players take turns according to the turn order track, receiving two actions to perform any of the following actions (found in the original game):
1) Build - Pay required resources and place an industry tile.
2) Network - Add a rail / canal link, expanding your network.
3) Develop - Increase the VP value of an industry.
4) Sell - Sell your cotton, manufactured goods and pottery.
5) Loan - Take a £30 loan and reduce your income.
Brass: Birmingham also features a new sixth action:
6) Scout - Discard three cards and take a wild location and wild industry card. (This action replaces Double Action Build in original Brass.)
Brass: Birmingham is a sequel to Brass. It offers a very different story arc and experience from its predecessor.

    Excellent guide! I just tried this strategy against the hard-level Mautoma solo (which I can usually defeat by a few points) and crushed my previous high score, winning 227-178. Canal Era was definitely the biggest change, as I built only 1 canal (on turn 2 for iron) and developed the level 1 beer/coal and level 2 cotton. Normally I would build about 5 or 6 canals for VP and network expansion, but now I see how much of a mistake that was. On the final turn of the game, I sold every level 4 cotton for the first time ever.

    Fantastic guide, Mafiul is a great teacher and the host does a good job of summing up each point. One question I did have is in regards to the "early game" section. In it, Mafiul points out that first player should look to spend the least so they can get first again the following round. This makes sense and should be obvious even to casual gamers. However where I get lost is in the suggestion that immediately following that first round, the first player should look to build an iron works. This is once again a great idea, but the issue I keep running into is where does one find the coal for it?? He seems to be suggesting that this can be accomplished on its own but I could be misinterpreting it. Is he saying that one should look for an opportunity to build iron specifically in a city that already has a coal mine placed in it by another player in the first turn? Who would do such a thing and give up the first ironworks so easily? In theory it seems like a fantastic plan to play the first ironworks I'm just confused as to what the granular details of doing so would look like. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light.

    I tried the Cotton-Strategy against the ai, including developing up to level 3. I was only able to build one cotton lvl 1 in the canal era, it took too many actions to build iron, cole and beer to be able to build and flip this one cotton. But I was able to build 2 more in the rail era and won the game, even if it was close. But I had way more industry VP than the AI, which was a nice bonus. How many cotton are you able to build using the strategy explained at 28:00?

  • @MafiulRobin

    @MafiulRobin

    2 жыл бұрын

    You should develop all L1 & L2 Cotton and start making from L3. You should make at least two L3 Cotton and try for 3rd one if possible. In Rail era you are expected to make 2-3 Cottons as well. Do not make L1 Cotton or Beer, develop them. If you make L1 Iron & Coal, consider overbuilding them when necessary.

    It should be noted that the strategy advice for 4 player is good for beginner to intermediate play, but tends to underperform to more specialized strategies at higher levels. Beer is too scarce for everyone to play it, so it makes more sense for main industry players to not play their own beer and instead go fully into their industry and flip other players' beer. Taking a more holistic approach and temporarily cooperating with other players will yield better returns than trying to compete as players gain more experience. This approach also makes cotton a much stronger strategy - note that their VP/action is much better by placing and selling an additional level III cotton in the canal era rather than trying to develop and play beer.

  • @MafiulRobin

    @MafiulRobin

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much for taking time to analyze the strategies and responding. For a successful strong cotton play one has to make at least two Level three cotton and flip them with own two level two beers. And they have to do it in addition to to making level two and level three irons. And all of these has to be done in Canal era. In three and four player game there will not be enough action to do all these. That is why it's (strong cotton play) only possible two players count which has more actions and manufacturing strategy is more viable in three and four player count as that need few actions. Mainly the extra action needed to develop all level one and two cottons actually prohibates cotton in higher player count as there are not enough action left after making all irons and beer in canal era. We have practical example video of 3-4P gameplay, after watching that you will also understand why we couldn't have spent anymore action anywhere else. In overwhelming majority games this is true in all skill level games, however sometime in rare situation things can be different. But those are exceptions. Soon we'll have a two players example game play Strategy Video where you'll see cotton strategy for two player games.

    @@MafiulRobin where you say 'one has to make at least two Level three cotton and flip them with own two level two beers.' is 100% not true, and you can simply do the math to see why that is. Placing a 3rd level III cotton instead of developing and placing 2 level II beers costs only 1 action and gets you 21 points, vs. 3 actions for 20 points. Even if you account for the canal potentially needed for the 3rd cotton, it's 2 actions for 23+ points vs. 3 actions for 20 points. It's absolutely more efficient to ignore beer as a cotton player in 4 player, you just need to have the beer coming from somewhere. Luckily, players playing beer are heavily incentivized to supply beer to cotton players! When you compare points from beer vs. points from manufactured goods, it's obvious that it's better, if possible, to simply play more beer. 2 level II manufactured goods only gives 20 points for 3.5 actions. If I can place a 3rd or 4th beer, that's 14-28 points in 1-2 actions! Even if they don't get flipped, that's still more efficient. Even when accounting for canals to connect beer to cotton, this is still more efficient in terms of points, actions, cost, and income than playing 2 level II beers and 2 level II manufactured goods. I'm not unfamiliar with the strategies you're describing - they've been around since shortly after the game was released years ago, and unfortunately, they will tend to underperform against players temporarily cooperating with each other. The strategies I'm describing are also based on tournament Brass: Lancashire play, so there is some precedent for thinking about the game this way.

  • @MafiulRobin

    Dear@@prj_tv2612, Thank you for your insightful comment. From my practical experience of more than 400 Brass Birmingham games with more than 150 players including some tournaments, I have to respectfully disagree with you. You have an excellent strategy and there are some other extremely good strategies as well. But these has some major problems and none are reliable enough for consistent good result like the one we mentioned. Here I will explain some of main problems with your mentioned strategy in 3-4 Players Games: Not making own beer and depending on consuming opponents beer can not be part of a consistent reliable strategy, it is too much dependent on opponent's choice. There is high risk of not been able to flip valuable cotton industry in canal era. High victory point printed on tiles alone doesn't mean much unless you consider all actions you have to take until flip it. Making many high value cotton is very expensive and very dependent on market price both Iron and Coal, it might require extra action for taking Loan and it might be extra difficult to become positive income. On the other hand making beer is one of the most efficient Cost Per Victory Point. By not making beer, it is giving opponent chance to make more extra beer which is most cost effective victory point for them and consuming all their beer instead of own is denying self from getting those victory point. Not making Beer in canal means not securing any beer spot for rail era for potential self overbuilt if it is necessary specially to flip very high value industries. It is very hard to steal opponents beer in canal era as those places might not be connected and there will not be extra actions to make additional canals to connect those beers. Again all of these true for a 3-4P game only as actions are more limited. And we are prioritizing strategy to help win very consistently, not in rare lucky situations. It will be also very helpful for everyone if you could give any source link of this exact strategy published before us.

    The reason you can't focus Main Industries and ignore Breweries is, you can't always rely on other players to give you Beer. They might try to deprive you of Beer, knowing you can't Sell without it. Merchant Beer might be available, but is there enough of it? What if a player spends their own Beer building Rails and uses the merchant Beer you needed? It's very risky not building your own Beer, and also Beer is incredible value. The VP & Income is the highest in the game relative to the price.

    Have you since played Birmingham? What are your thoughts on the differences? To be frank I would have to say that although Lancashire is a fantastic game, Birmingham is at minimum a slight improvement across all metrics. Lancashire can feel very "solved" as the reduced number of possible industries means there's a much smaller range of directions you can go in any particular game. That being said it is a game which rewards tighter play more highly, as less options means more rewards for those that see them available.

    Why not? Coal can get emptied quicker e.g.? Also building it only once gives you less coal? Don’t understand that Tipp… also the Tipp with overbuilding, why do you save an action? Overbuilding also costs one action.

    @@SaschaKleiber Usually if you make iron work in a new location, you also have to make a link. Overbidding level 1 iron work will save that link action. You'll lose Level 1 iron work vp but with that saved action you would do something greater.

    It was going to be too difficult and involved to illustrate everything he was going over, especially at the speed he was covering the material. I'm sorry that the footage doesn't really match up - I started to do that when I started the edit and realized it was going to be pretty tough to pull off.

    MG is also strong in 2 player games. i usually get around 190 vp from cotton and pottery, and my wife gets around 200 vp using both MG and pottery. She is extremely good in this game So i assume your whole analysis is weak and superficial.
