    For those interested in the differences between Brass: Birmingham and Brass: Lanchashire, here is a list. (Please comment if I've missed something or gotten something wrong.) This list is copied from the reply thread to J. Bertels's comment. In Lancashire: 1) The only commodity is cotton. There is no pottery, nor manufactured goods. 2) There are no breweries, nor beer. Double rail actions cost 15 pounds and two coal, but no beer. 3) Players can also build ports and shipyards. Shipyards are high point-value industries that flip immediately after being built. Shipyards with a lock symbol on them cannot be built in any era; they must be developed away. Ports are used to sell cotton. 4) Cotton can be sold either to any player's unflipped port (which flips both the port and the cotton mill) or to the distant market (special fixed locations around the edge of the board, or any player's flipped or unflipped port.) When selling to the distant market, players must turn over a distant market tile, reduce the distant market marker by the number on the tile, and then receive the income bonus on the new distant market spot (in addition to the income received from flipping the cotton mill.) If the distant market marker reaches the bottom of the track, the sale is canceled and no further sales to the distant market are possible that era. The distant market track is reset and market tiles reshuffled at the beginning of the rail era. 5) There are no wild cards. Instead, players may discard two cards (using both of their actions for a turn) in order to perform a build action at any location. 6) Players are not allowed to take loans in the final two rounds of the game. There's a placard placed in the draw deck during rail phase setup to remind players of this. 7) Players score 1VP per 10 pounds left in their player area at the end of the game.

    Also, players may take loans of either 10, 20 or 30 pounds upon their choice, and decrease their income levels by 1, 2 or 3 accordingly. And the map is different.

    It's helpful to note that the theme ties together some of the rules concepts. In general, *Brass isn't about selling commodities it's about establishing trade routes.* You have to ship coal and not iron because industries (and railroads) require a regular supply of coal to operate, while iron is only needed for maintenance and repairs. Flipping a tile doesn't mean you've exhausted that industry; it means you've established enough trade routes to use its full production capacity. Income represents excess profits, which helps understand why loans operate the way they do. Level 1 industries don't go out of business at the end of the canal phase (they still provide income, and their VPs aren't lost); they're just swamped by the economies of scale possible during the rail phase. Even the canals are still operating; it's just not economical to build more of them once rail is available.

    twocinc When I’ve taught Brass L in the past I have always used that theming (businesses are establishing “customers” for what they produce and when supplying at capacity become profitable and (score vps in the scoring phases). Placing a tile on the board is just getting the initial infrastructure and workers in place - hence the initial capital cost. It’s very rare (as in these games) but laudable for the mechanics to so strongly reflect the theme that the theme is implied BY those mechanics. Well done to the designers!

    Thanks Rodney! I realize that we made 3 mistakes overall while playing. The understanding of the network, the scoring for canal and rail link which we did count only for our own tile instead of anybody tile and finally the develop action. We forgot to pay 1 iron to do that. We ended up having spent only 4 iron in the whole game lol. I don't know why we forgot that as I read the rule it's pretty clear. I knew there was something we did wrong. THanks for clearing this up!

    I already played Birmingham once, but decided to listen to your video, and caught something we had all forgotten: that you'd have to pay with your industries if you had no money and still owed more to the bank during income. I had skimmed the rules during our play and saw the part where you'd lose VPs, but not the one about industries. I think the same rule already existed in the base game, but I hadn't played it in a while, and I've yet to see this happen. Anyway, I'm saving this to point people to it before they play the game. It's extremely helpful, as are all your videos. :)

    Rodney you have absolutely outdone yourself with this one mate. Phenomenal video. It is a heavier game but your explanation was so on point...I can't imagine explaining this any better. One suggestion though would be maybe to add some more thematic explanation for the game mechanics. You have done this here (e.g. why Iron can be transported without links) but a few more examples would have been great (e.g. what's up with the weird rules around beer and barrels?). Thanks for everything!

    Thanks for the kind words, and the feedback. It's a bit of balancing act, determining how much information to include, particularly in the longer videos. The more I add, the longer it gets, but I agree - the thematic justifications, often lock the information into your brain - which can be useful, especially during the longer videos!

    Again great content! High production value. Nice graphic overlays, item fade-ins and just overall editing. I really like the approach of first do the setup and then explain each round/action without adding extra context/clutter to your instructions. Keeping the instructions minimal while still making sure to cover all the rules must take up a lot of time and effort.

    Best tutorial for a complex game I've seen in a while. Rodney is the god of tuts. I have 2 small questions: 1. Is beer ever replenished on a merchant tile (the outer side of the map, the barrel that gives immediate bonus when taken) once somebody sold , e.g., cotton industry through it? 2. When you take the beer (consume it) from any merchant, or from your brewery, where does it go? Outside of the board in the general supply? Because in the rulebook its noted that the player who receives (or consumes?) the beer (the one player who is fast enough to sell first through that merchant), receives ONE FREE BEER. What do they mean with this?

  • @WatchItPlayed

    @WatchItPlayed

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words! The beer is replenished on each merchant tile at the end of the canal era. The beer that you take is simply added back to the general supply, receiving the free beer in that moment essentially means that you don't have to spend one of your own or one from your opponents.

    Thank you for the clear and concise video! After playing my first game, I have a few questions that arose between the players and that aren't clearly touched upon in the video. For anyone that can answer them: - The written rulebook seems to claim (ambiguously) that it is possible to sell several industries using only one action (paying multiple barrels if needed of course), is it one sale per action or multiple? - when going to the railway era you flip industries of lvl 2 or more back up but do NOT put the resources back on mines correct? Therefore coal and iron mines are sitting on the map but cannot earn you victory points unless you upgrade them. I find it weird the rules don't clarify this anywhere. -This one might be trivial but, when you settle income at the end of the turn, any interest that needs to be paid goes the player token and counts towards turn order right? For some reason one of the players would not accept this so I'm asking. major thanks to anyone who can help on one of theses points.

  • @WatchItPlayed

    @WatchItPlayed

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Gaspard, glad you enjoyed the video! The answers to your questions are covered in the video, so let's go through them: 1) You were wondering whether you can sell several industries in a single action. That's covered here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fq6syJatltSfkdY.html 2a) I'm not clear on what you mean by "when going to the railway era you flip industries of lvl 2 or more back up". Here is the section of the video that covers the Canal Era - as you'll see, no where do you flip any tiles: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fq6syJatltSfkdY.html. 2b) You also asked if iron or coal is returned to tiles in the Canal era - you won't see this question addressed in the video, because coal and iron is never added back to those tiles. Adding resources back to tiles isn't something you do, so it's not something you'd find mentioned in the video. 3) When you say "any interest that needs to be paid", what are you referring to? What interest? Perhaps you could tell me which page of the rule book, and section you are referring to, so I can understand what you are asking about.

    @@WatchItPlayed thank you so much for being so responsive! 1- Gotcha, I watched the whole thing twice but I guess my brain didn't register and its a little unclear in the written rules. 2- thanks, it just felt weird that it isn't possible to get victory points a second time from mine tiles unlike the industries tiles so I felt compelled to ask. 3- I wanted to make sure negative income paid at the end of a turn was in fact counted towards total money spent in respect to deciding who goes first. Yes I guess, so just a stupid question! thanks again, and huge respect for the thousands of comments answered this is crazy work!

    @@gd1037 2- All of the tiles are called "Industry tiles". At the end of Canal Era you get victory points for all of your flipped industry tiles on the board, and then remove from the board all level 1 tiles, but leave higher level tiles there (flipped or not-flipped). That means that the flipped higher level tiles WILL be there to score AGAIN at the end of Rail Era: it doesn't matter if they are production (coal/iron/brewery) OR manufacturing (cotton/goods/pottery). VPs are given at the end of an Era, income is given only at the moment when you flip a tile (coal/iron/brewery: last item is taken from the tile; cotton/goods/pottery: using a sell action to flip). That means you CAN get VPs for a higher level industry tile twice during one game, but not income.

  • @gd1037

    @@esarandom Thanks for answering. My question was more relating to resources since production tiles are flipped when all resources are removed, It is impossible to get VPs again in the railway era without upgrading the tile (I wanted to know if you ever added resources back on the tile, which was answered as a NO by the channel)

    I understand Rodney. I love your work and your videos are extremely helpful. I can also imagine that you are high in demand from lots of publishers, limiting the projects you can work on. You became too successful and good at what you do :D. I would watch the video which highlights the differences, because it's interesting to see a comparison of the two games next to each other. However, I would not be able to use it to start my game night with players who are new to the Lancashire game, because that would probably be too confusing for a more complex game like this. But as I said, I do understand your decision. Keep up the good work and quality videos. Cheers!

    Jonas Kissling I haven’t been over to their site to see what it says. They may have hoped I’d have time for two tutorials, but our original discussions were that I would do one for sure, and most likely a summary of the other, when I got a chance. Many of the core rules are the same between both, so assuming you’ve watched this video, a quick read through the Lancashire rules should have you caught up on the differences in no time. Either way, I don’t think they were trying to mislead - they likely were just hoping for the best.

  • @twocinc

    @twocinc

    6 жыл бұрын

    Major differences, in Lancashire: 1) The only commodity is cotton. There is no pottery, nor manufactured goods. 2) There are no breweries, nor beer. Double rail actions cost 15 pounds and two coal, but no beer. 3) Players can also build ports and shipyards. Shipyards are high point-value industries that flip immediately after being built. The distant market track is reset and market tiles reshuffled at the beginning of the canal era.

    Perfect video which explains such a hard game in about half an hour, well done! I have to admit that I played Brass Lancashire before and I have some doubts regarding both games... 1) Is the rule of building your ferry road in the first round is also applicable in Lancashire (by playing any of the cards you have in your hand)? 2) what if you want to buy a coal mine/ an iron works and there are no resources available in supplies (coal and iron)

    1) As far as I remember, yes (but we do have a video that goes over the differences for Lancashire, if you want to check that out to be sure). 2) In the rare case you need extra cubes, temporarily borrow them from the very top spaces of the iron market, and return them back there when they are consumed from the board.

    rodney a lot of thanks for this.i am always on the hunt for good economic games(not euros)establishing a industry and aming a company style games.i only have concorddia,mombasa,yedo and lewis&clark becouse i think they are unique designs still and pretty fun.this goes right into mine collection and its a bonus that the game is language independant.so people in mid europe will be happy with their pucrchase.
