This film DID actually inspire the movie "Predator" in 1987. Sadly, Kevin Peter Hall, who played the Alien in both films (and was also in "Harry and the Hendersons as "Bigfoot"), died shortly afterwards. RIP, big man X

Palance is a consummate professional, always amazing no matter what he's stuck in
my theory is they asked Jack Palance if he would be in the movie, he turned it down, so they got Martin Landau. Than Palance said he could do it, so the filmmakers just had them play the same role.

Good theory, but that sorta seems like a lot more thought and planning than is evidenced on-screen. I'm going with Graydon pulling-off some analog proto-version of the Fappening.
To be honest I actually think the alien design/costume is pretty cool. When he's just standing still or walking slowly he has a menacing appeal to him.

This has always been one of my cult favorites; ever since I first saw it on late-nite cable in the 80's. Then I bought it on dvd in NYC back in 1998 or so. Still watch it every now and then like Phantasm and From Beyond.
I'm surprised none of the reviews of this movie I've seen, the fact that they are warned, and fairly early in the movie, never gets mentioned. One of the main characters reads it on the bathroom wall and talks about it. It's kind of cryptic, but still a warning!
As Brandon pointed out, the alien hunter looks like the Balok dummy from Star Trek TOS, but the disk parasite things also look like the parasites from the season 1 episode "Operation - Annihilate!"
"Alieeeeeeeeeeen!" Hahaha new ring tone!

8:25 - Shout-out to the great RALPH MEEKER (left; starred in Kiss Me Deadly and Paths Of Glory) and NEVILLE BRAND (right; starred in Stalag 17, Birdman Of Alcatraz, and Tobe Hooper's Eaten Alive.) Props to Greydon Clark: Meeker had suffered a stroke and--because Clark admired Meeker's body of work and wanted to help get him back on his feet--put him in the film.

Oh shit that was Neville!!! Don't forget about That Darn Cat and the Twilight Zone episode that got banned for 54 years
I saw this movie in theaters in my country France in 1980. I was 12. it was the decade of horror movies. Same year came "howling" and more. Yes, it is a B or Z movie but it was so well done for a budget of $150k and with this awkward amazing cast!! I loved this movie so much. In 2000, 20 years after, I was happy to find a DVD copy made from a old VHS tape. Now, with social media and huge youtube platform, the movie has became a Cult Classic well deserved with a blu-ray version.
With cameos by Ralph Meeker, Neville Brand, and Sue Ane Langdon, no less.

this film is a under rated masterpiece atmosphere is so on point it makes it scary something a lot of new horror movies miss.
The film has a stellar cast of seasoned veterans. The wife was a big Landau fan which was one reason we went. You didn't even mention Neville Brand, Sue Ann Langdon and Ralph Meeker.
Have you thought of reviewing Sweet Home? It's a 1989 Japanese horror film that got a wonderful Famicom video game adaptation, which got a spiritual successor in Resident Evil.

Eh, I kinda doubt it. The whole "cryptic warning from an old local dude" thing is pretty standard in the genre. I'm not sure Stephen King can write a story without invoking it.
Oh yes yes YES! PLEASE do "Critters"!
Great review as always Brandon. Another movie where Jack Palance and Martin Landau play whackos (along with Donald Pleasance!) is Alone in the Dark from 1982 which I think is actually a pretty good little movie. Just a suggestion for a future episode.

Another Greydon Clark film to look into is Angel's Revenge (a.k.a. Angel Brigade and 7 Angels). That movie not only has Jack Parlance, but also features cameos by Jim Backus and Pat Butram.
I saw 'Without warning' on TV during the early 80s when I was very young and it scared me. It's still not a bad movie to add to a cult collection.

Rick Baker(before he won 7 oscars for best makeup from seven different movies ) was the one designed the Alien hunter makeup for Kevin Peter Hall in this movie, including Harry from Harry and the Hendersons(1987) and which Rick Baker won his 2nd oscar best makeup after winning his first oscar win for the werewolf transformation in An American Werewolf in London(1981), the other oscar wins for Baker included, Tim Burton's Ed Wood(starring Martin Landau), The Nutty Professor(1996), Men in Black(1997), How The Grinch Stole Christmas(2000), and The Wolfman(2010)

Hell this movie had done this before the infamously well known Predator series did it. And for an add bonus the Alien in this movie & for the Predator series is played by the well famous suit actor Kevin Peter Hall

This movie was my introduction to B horror movies. Been a fan ever since.

I love your videos man! I remember binge watching your B movie reviews back in 2017 made me super into B movies, and I guess I went a little deeper than I probably should have-anyway, after discovering “A Black Christmas,” and watching the whole movie online, I fell in love with it. I’m a big fan of “A Christmas Story,” and I believe you said the same director was behind “A Black Christmas”? That aside, I really liked it, and then one day my father found it on Demand and said we should watch it since I talked about it all the time, saying it was an example of “one of the great horror movies” (i’m really into the horror genre, if you haven’t guessed already). I was a bit nervous since he seemed set to tear it apart, but I agreed to watch it with him and see what he thought of it. Long story short, we couldn’t make it even halfway through the film; he said it wasn’t even bad enough to be a “it’s so bad it’s good movie.” He said it was simple...this movie was just BAD. Honestly, in the end of it all, I kinda agreed with him. “A Black Christmas” is a B movie for sure, not really the greatest. I say that because I watched “Silence Of the Lambs” for the first time afterwards...and I don’t think I can go back to B horror movies ever again. All the same, “A Black Christmas” is still somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, especially considering all the great horror movies it inspired. So yeah, it’s important, but not really as wonderful as you give it credit for. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, though. But Billy doesn’t have anything on Hannibal. Poor Billy.
This movie was also before Predator and when I think about it the plot is similar! Please Brandon also do a review on the X-Tro trilogy !!!!
Yay a new video from Brandon Tenold!!!! Time for a bad movie and some scathing jokes.
If you want another good Jack Palance performance, check out "Panic in the Streets" from about 1950. I think it was his first major role. It's about a plague outbreak in New Orleans, and it has fellow scary guy Richard Widmark as the hero.
love the commentary. very funny stuff. thank you
This movie's cover art is epic
7:31 "Mynocks.....chewing on the power cables again"
So, the budget was $150k. Landau and Palance got 75k and Rick Baker got 19k for the alien head. That means this movie was shot for 56 thousand dollars. That is beyond low budget, even for 1980.
Jack Palance & Martin Landau...

Saw this as a kid, scared my younger, gullible self. Later, after watching Predator, I saw the parallels, too. It's like "somebody" knew this movie and thought: "I'm gonna do this again, just... better." BTW, in Germany the movie's called "die fliegenden Teufel" = the flying devils.
0:51 that looks like those creatures from The Force Awakens

"Come on, kill me, I'm here! Come on, do it!" -- Me halfway through this movie.
