Brandel Chamblee on ‘What the hell is happening to the game of golf’ | The Scott Verplank Show

Спорт

In this episode, Scott Verplank talks with his former North Texas junior golf rival Brandel Chamblee, now one of professional golf’s most recognizable broadcasters.
Chamblee, a Golf Channel analyst, shares his views on among other topics, the impact of LIV golf, the Public Investment Fund and its association with Saudi Arabia.
Episode highlights:
17:18: Chamblee: “We’re risking alienating the lifelong fan of the game.”
19:17: Chamblee: “It’s more about a blind greediness with no respect for what came before them and no obvious sense of debt to future generations.”
21:00: Chamblee on whether the Public Investment Fund and its association with Saudi Arabia or the PGA Tour are more responsible for golf’s divisions.
23:00 Where Chamblee’s dissent with the Public Investment Fund stems from.
24:59: The “Faustian pact” LIV golfers have made

The argument about LIV not caring if it makes a profit and paying ridiculous $$$ is a good one in my opinion. But, Brandel did not answer Scott's question about Jay M making it political with the 9/11 supporters only 6 months later signing a deal. I understand that was a way to end $$$ spending on the law suit but it was a horrible decision nonetheless. That's where most people think PGA tour leadership messed up. He should have used that time negotiating with Fenway group but his ego got in the way.

This might come as a total surpise to a lot of people, but, and now hold on...PGA did NOT invented the game of golf. Silence But PGA act as they did just that. Whoever that once sold out the heritage of golf to PGA did a bloody mistake. One...ONE major in Europe....and THREE in the US of A. What LIV has done, is to pull some big roots and replanted them on the other side of the ocean. Ofc its just a part of the bigger picture. Next step: Rory, Fleetwood, Fitzpatric, Lowry...etc...will go back and play DP world tour for most of the time. LIV players, depending on the scheduele, will play more DP event. PIF will now turn their eyes on the DP world tour. And here we go, the beginning of a world tour has seen its first light. And, i wouldnt be surprised to see a new Major takes ut form. Maybe in Spain on Valderama.

Money? Monaghan getting 8mil a year? Gentleman's game? You're living in the past. Everything is exploited these days. Fedex was in the Saudi Investment Fund portfolio, and how many times have you seen a PGA player doing a press conference in front of a Fedex banner? All I know is this: I get to watch LIV golf (for the time being) because I haven't paid for cable in years and PGA viewer access is locked down by paid for broadcast rights. The PGA tour is a money cartel just like any other business - get over it. PGA and at least be honest about it. Chamblee is paid to have an opinion using with legacy/unrealistic arguments.

The PGA is currently no different than LPGA. Great golf but no one cares. No one on the leaderboard is familiar. People want to see Rory, Tiger, Phil, Bubba, Rickie, and Jordon. Others have the personality of a paint can. They're all the same. Tiger wasn't fun to watch because he won. It was HOW he won. Daly had a huge swing. Phil took risks. What do you love about Cantlay?

The PGA has essentially become a proving ground to go to the LIV tour. The good ole boy elite only system has been exposed and destroyed by the LIV tour and now they have the PGA by the balls. That's the real reason why Tiger was so mad at Jay. Also pretty funny how the PGA would tell the players they had no money to increase purses etc, but when LIV took all the star PGA players they miraculously came up with 20 million dollar purses. I didn't see Brandel address where all the new found money came from.

Your hate is showing. Back in the 60's when the AFL came about they were taking players from the NFL and the draft. The NFL was dogging the AFL as a lesser league and threatening players if the go to the AFL they will take there pension from them. Well after 6-7 years they came together and now its better than it was. The same thing will happen eventually with Liv and the Pga tour. Stop dogging one another and look for a positive outlook instead of your hate full comments.

Times are changing and golf needs to change with the times! I am 63 and havent' watched the PGA tour in over 5 years. Not even the majors , its become stale as shit !!! Saying if you leave you’re gone. Brandel is so wrong on all of this. Pushing his pga narrative. LIV allows them to play outside of LIV. A-lot of LIV guys have been playing DP tour events and the majors! Which the PGA doesn’t control. It’s the PGA that won’t allow them to be independent contractors and play both pga and LIV. Wow such a bad interview.

I'm confused by this debate between those excited by this LIV thing versus traditionalists denouncing it. I'm a golf fan...period. I want to see superb play in exciting competitive scenarios on courses we all know and love. It matters zero to me how fantastically wealthy these players can become with guaranteed money. What benefit does John Rahm getting half a billion dollars just for showing up bring me? What, I'm supposed to be jacked up cause he's in shorts? It's all become nonsense. That's what happens when obscene money poisons something...

The PGA tour is/has been a bad business model. No guarantees for any players, no guarantees for sponsors on who is playing, if your 125 ranked player in the world there are times you can play for stretch of golf and lose money after paying your caddie/airfare, etc. Difficult to compare golf to the other sports, but the 450 NBA players are all multi millionaires, whether you’re LeBron or the worst guy in the league. The 600 or so MLB players are all millionaires. Also, golf is very popular around the world, and the PGA tour has done little to grow the game outside of the US. I’m with you on good golf, but the numbers are always what counts.

Brandel hit the NAIL on the head!!!! The event organizers MUST must must make fairways narrower and rough higher. The rough should be a penalty, as it has always been, or was meant to be. Then, there wouldn't be a need to bifurcate anything. Like he said, players are not as accurate as they used to be. Well penalize them then damn it! Don't just complain about how the courses are set up as difficult as possible, and how they can't make them any longer, and say the players are too "Athletic" these days. Nope, it's just not true.
