Brandel Chamblee Clobbers Nobilo and Notah With "Shaft Lean"

Talk about a SUPER NERDY golf argument! My goodness! Stats! Put downs! Condescention! Give Brandel this much: he had a strong take, and the numbers ready to support it. Nobilo just kept harping that Tiger is "not healthy" and Notah... well.. whatdidjya expect?

@@canefan17 I know this is a bit of an old post and reply, but this is incorrect; and arguably the opposite. He went to Haney to chase after performance consistency and to preserve his knee and back issues. His distance, particularly with long irons and off the tee, set him apart thanks to his speed and timing. But speed and timing are at the cost of high maintenance and low consistency. Tiger will give up winning 1 time by 15 shots to win 15 times by 1 shot; which is what he wanted to do with Hank (and technically it worked).

Brandel is right. Tiger's shaft lean is much more severe than they were before, no question. Tiger's worse enemy is himself, his lack of consistency with coaches, with caddies and his obsessive interest of always modifying his swing are examples of this. His emphasis on lifting weights have also not probably been helpful on his back, he played his best when he was skinny. Brandel is 100% right, Tiger ended up leaving Sean Foley because of his inconsistencies in his swing. As I said, Tiger is his own worst enemy, he should have never had left Butch Harmon, never had fired his caddie, and shouldn't be so obsessed about gaining body muscle.

Also, when nobilo says Tervino was one of the best ball strikers ever, that is true but like brandel says his grip, takeaway, and downswing was not what tiger is doing. You can't have that much shaft lean and swing inside out while getting stuck! Trevino reversed everything, shut club face going back, outside the dropped it in (while having open stance) then held the face off if not trying to open it before/during impact. Tiger is trying to do too many things with all his tendencies, swaying and dropping. Too many things to time at 39 years old and 3 swing changes later. Chipping is just a symtom of stress.

Nobody who has this spine surgery ever gets back to 100%, it's fact. Even if it doesn't hurt, it still limits spine rotation. Why doesn't Tiger just accept reality; he's almost 40 and has a 50 yr old's back from hitting 1000 balls every day. Shorten the swing, maximize efficiency and take it easy on your back. Tiger could hit 3/4 punch shots and only lose 10 yards on every club, but his back would be safer and he'll be able to play longer. His ego of hitting it 300+ and swinging 125mph will be his downfall.

I believe that Tiger woods has a bad back because of the same reason many other modern golfers do. That being trying to twist his spine over a locked in base (lower body) instead of rotating his hips. Many of us older guys have reentered the game by abandoning the "core coil" and adapting ourselves to a more body friendly approach. The same body friendly approach is being instituted among young baseball players to teach throwing techniques that might eliminate the need for Tommy John surgery in 26 year old pitchers. Times are changing. When scientists quit trying to prove "theres no God" and stick to using their knowledge to help people, life gets better.

This was a very interesting debate and one that Chamblee was definitely correct. Tiger used his lower back in all sorts of violent ways for years, and while restricting the lower body movement with a strong focus on the upper body can produce a very accurate shot, at some stage something is going to give. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Ben Hogan are perfect examples of the longevity swing, full fluid swing where the lumbar works in conjunction with the pelvis, rather than forms a pivot point. As Chamblee says the foward shaft lean is a subconscious attempt to create more distance, probably didn't do it on the range.

Although I may not necessarily agree with chamblee, history proves that in any sport, not just golf, that great athlete doesn't necessarily equal great coach or analyst. Was Phil Jackson a great player in the NBA? No, but he helped Jordan & pippen get rings and then Kobe & Shaq get theirs. Also wanted to say that being critical of tiger doesn't mean he dislikes him. I think if that was the casecase, he wouldn't be trying to give any kind of advice at all and wouldn't be animate about it. He might even be encouraging tiger to keep doing what he's been doing cause it hasn't been leading to success lately

When you are that steep on a wedge you better be perfect on contact or you stick it into the ground. Tiger does have mechanical problems with his swing and these mechanical problems cause stress on his back. as he needs to lean back and swing left to hit the ball where he is aiming.

Wow rather you like Brandel or not he was spot on. Had an instructor introduce this very swing concept to me at the and it was the worst advice I ever accepted in this sport. About the only thing this is good for is your short irons as I admit you will pick up distance on wedges and short irons. The mid irons you will also pick up some distance but you begin lose accuracy. By the time I got to my long irons I did not know were the ball was going and my 5 iron was not going any further than my 6 iron and my 4 iron was maybe 5 yards longer. Next my 3 wood gave me a lot of roll but would not go any higher than 9 or 10 feet and that is being generous. I lost at least 50 yards with my driver and could not control the distance with my 56 and 60 degree wedge around the green. The worst part is my scores jumped into the low 90's. The teacher told me that I needed to be fit for my clubs. Thank goodness I had adjustable driver, wood and hybrid so that was no problem but I did buy a new iron set only to see it get worse. Maybe a month later, what do you know? I had back problems just like Brandel said and had to go to the chiropractor. Just so happened the chiropractor was a golfer and advised me to get away from this guy and cut my loses. I cannot believe there are instructors out there teaching this nonsense but I blame no one by myself. I felt real silly but If TIGER got duped then it could happen to any of us.

Remember, I believe his dad was a Green Beret, and I think he died around that time, so maybe he just wanted to see what the whole SOF thing was like, or maybe beings he grew up, and looked up to his dad, he always wanted to do both golf and be in the military, but couldn't do both, so he was curious. Who knows? All I know is he went there a few times. What he did while he was there, he's not telling.

That doesn't mean he is a navy seal or ever will be but he has trained with them which did cause him to injure his knee. Brandel; why does the manufacturer fabricate the irons with a quarter inch of angel ( at the hosel ) for each of the irons until you get to the long irons, by that time may even lean back a few degrees...........Hmmmmmmmmmmm? The clubs are made that way to have your hands even or slightly ahead at address; more ahead with the wedges, even less with the 4-iron; so that you come into the ball with the proper loft. Tiger should seek out Mike Malaska fo his next guru!

His launch angle in 2014 is 11.86 last year it was 11.20. The apex of his drive this year was 106 feet last year it was 109 feet. Clubhead speed last year was 118.3 mph this year it was 115.63. It is his back...not his swing. If he had a good back the swing would work just like it did the earlier part of last year when he won 4 times before the final 2 or 3 majors. But he doesnt have a good back so the reason he has more forward shaft lean is because he is trying to zero it out and elevate the pressure on his back by lifting and straightening out. That is why you see him end majority of his shots straight up and down instead of in a nice curve c position. So both analyst are wrong and right but that is why you should look up the numbers for yourselves

Clobbers? He's completely wrong, he doesn't understand spin loft, optimal driving is done from 12 plus launch angle with a shallow angleOf attack. Bubba Watson has a higher launch and swings up 4 degrees sometimes. So everybody swings up or shallows out with a slight lean. Speith, Rory, Jason all do this. Also his idols jack, Gary, Watson all had reverse c so lol what as shitty arguement

Later when Day won and he came into the booth for the post tournament rap up (Do the winner do that? But what Chamblee failed to realize is that Day is now a complete player. He should have come back and said, " look, I didn't think he could win but he proved me wrong." Instead he kissed his ass like the bitch that he is.

Looking back on this, Brandel was right. Frank Nobilo and Notah Begay wanted really badly to just try to defend Tiger because they really wanted to see him dominate golf with that swing he had in 2012-2013. We all did. But Brandel has studied the game a ton, and he knows his stuff, and he didn't like Tiger's technique. And now, in 2018, we can see he was mostly right. Yeah, Tiger won 8 times with it, but struggled in majors and never owned it because it was so unnatural to him. Now in 2018 he's finally healthier, he's gone back to natural technique that he learned as a kid, his swing speed is 129 MPH (which is almost unbelievable), and his shot quality is much better.
