Yeah bad vibes from the guy. A fantasy movie doesn't make ppl think that's what New Zealand is like lol. I am American from the rural backwoods of North Carolina, the movie was called Dead Alive here, and as a kid this movie made me fascinated with New Zealand seeing the shots of Lionel walking through the town and city. Nice little country.

As someone from Sweden who's been a fan of Braindead and Jackson since 1992, this is a really nice find. Especially since the promised blu-ray overseen by Jackson is taking its sweet time coming. Watching Braindead in a swedish cinema, totally uncut, as someone who dreamt of becoming a filmmaker - the censors somehow saw the light, realising it was a comedy - was almost a transcendent experience.

It's a gore splatter, comedy, a love story, a story of a mum who tries to do all in her power to keep her only boy safe(even from love), a mystery. All rolled up into one film. I love every bloody minute of it and it has such rewatch value!!!

Thank u for this. I never knew behind the scenes footage existed. It's so strange seeing the zombies in full makeup speaking off camera lol. As a kid I was scared of those guys

And then he stayed and brought LOTR to the country. Congratulations PJ for creating a whole industry that changes a country 👏👏👏 Was a fan from Bad Taste on a dodgy VHS tape and took great pleasure in screening Brain Dead at Swansea SU Uni movie night in 93. Was amazing evening 🤣 If you make it, they will come 💥

The frustrating thing is I used to have a more in depth behind the scenes documentary on an old VHS tape which covered everything including all the special effects, but unfortunately I seem to have lost it. Hopefully it'll be released someday. Edit: I just found it! Here it is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imlklsNyo621f7w.html

If only they knew whilst he was making his silly 'splatstick' movie, that the man would go on to become the most important kiwi filmmaker of all time, almost single handedly turning new zealand into one of the most attractive places to make a film in the world....

Seeing the actors talk and the whole backdrop of NZ cinema at the time, just awesome. This hopefully on the eventual bluray/4k re-release we hoooopefully get someday.

I grew up in NZ, and remember when Bad Taste was released, in about 1987. All the kids were talking about it. Likewise with Meet The Feebles and Braindead. Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners were also very good. But the shock at the news that he'd been put in charge of a giant budget to make the LOTR trilogy was too real.

(4:51) So the Zombie McGruder is still played by Stuart Devenie, but the scene where he’s now missing his lower jaw when it’s torn right off later on is played by a look-alike. Could’ve fooled me. 😮

Yer Damn Right SR1331!!! Here in Orstalya, back in the 90's, I watched this fillum 5 times at the theatres! The last time it was shown was The Extended Version, which was a total brain-cramping surprise!!! It was basically one of the Best Films I'd ever seen, but it was even better, eh!!! The DVD I have is that version, but a pretty s**thouse aspect ratio. I so hope, when PJ 'FINALLY' releases his First 4 on Hi-Def, that they are The Extended Versions - have deleted scenes/Behind The Scenes and HOPEFULLY Commentary Tracks!!! I dig your 'slip/box' idea!!! I don't care what it's called, just as long as it's The Total Version!!! Keep 'em crossed until they bleed or get gangrene!!!

i forgot what a cute "bear" Peter Jackson is! I have affection/love for all his films and his career. the po-faced attitude of the report almost seems laughable , both for the time and in retrospect. if it weren't for the state (partial) funding Jackson's films got earlier on, is it as likely he would have brought massive productions (and their budgets) to his hometown/country? Arguments of art vs commerce have been fought since someone paid a stone for a bracelet made of seaweed. But setting cinema into camps of genre vs "worthy" (all films are genre!) is naive and pretentious.

The recently dead would still have a few gallons of blood in their body. It doesn't simply disappear just because your brain or heart stop. But long dead zombies from graves? No, they would be all dried out husks.
