Do you think the expectation to tip for hair services is too high? Have you experienced tipping fatigue?

I tip my hair lady, Spruced Up Salon 😉 however she's kept it 💯 w me in every shape, way & form which say's a lot in this day & age & due to the length & thickness of my hair it's been impossible finding a capable person & she's exceptional, does it w the sheer perfection of a $20 haircut I've nvr found before so I ALWAYS give $5 on that & go from there. I feel tipping shld come LAST & only aftr certain aspects are met 1st & foremost.

If someone is providing a hair service and they’re not working for someone else in a salon, you don’t need to tip! The reason you need to tip when you are provided a service is because, when the stylist is employed by someone, all the money does not go to them. Since her braider was WFH, she was pocketing all the money she received and did not need a tip.

You said it yourself, "Her price is her price". Cause I'm not tipping anybody who sets their own prices. The braider sat up in her home and *decided* to give herself $40 an hour. Its a little bizare how the convo critiquing tip culture started around underpaid, exploited service workers, but now, independent business owners who call their own shots have hopped on the train to say "what about me?" Like ma'am...what about you, you know?😭 I agree that my thank you is my thank you.

The braider works in her own home and didn’t have to provide anything besides the service. It doesn’t sound like she offered snacks, or anything special with her service so no I don’t think she should have gotten a tip either. Tips are 100% optional. If I’m paying 350 for braids that are not even waist length with no wash, blow dry, or scalp treatment you will get the 350 and a thank you. I will also send people to you for doing a great job, but I will not tip. If the braider squeezed me in, or did something magnificent, then that’s the only way she’s getting a tip from me lol.

$350 for basic box braids, with no wash, no conditioning, and no blow drying is ridiculous. So she pretty much phoned it in, and expected top pricing to be acceptable. So not only did she overcharged for the style, then she didn't give anything extra for the cost. I wouldn't have tipped either..

  • @TomikaKelly

I'm not a hair stylist, but there's NO such thing as "overcharging." We dont know the cost of living nor the cost of doing business kn the braider's area. The provider sets their price and you either like it or you don't.

I am a standard 20% tipper no matter what service I receive. Restaurant, spa, hair, vacation, etc. I tips 20%. I was told a long time ago by a waitress that if I have a problem with the server write it on the receipt. Management ALWAYS sees the receipts. My aunt told me I should not sit my butt in a booth if I can't leave a tip. If I have a problem tell the manager, but I should ALWAYS leave something bc they did work. I love my aunt, but I do not fully appreciate that notion. If I tipped this braider 20% on $350 that means my total payout would be $420!! I cannot justify that expenditure. I have NEVER paid for braids in my life bc I have relatives that can braid my own hair for FREE!! The only problem with this story is this girl going back to that same braider. Now this braider knows this girl doesn't tip. Will she STILL provide the same excellent level of service sans tip?🤔

Hello 👋🏾! Thank you for your comments and thoughts on this. I feel like $420 for braids is insane, but I’ve seen people pay more. A lady posted pictures of her $1700 braids. I can’t justify spending that much on hair personally.

Also the reason why she needed to go to an atm to pay in cash is cause she's an illegal stylist lol. Getting that under the table money and evading taxes yet still greedy enough to expect a tip lmfao.

More reasons why America is weird af. Tips were only a thing in that godforsaken country because servers/waiters and delivery drivers got paid BELOW the legal minimum wage and only reason why the US government considered it legal to pay them below the minimum wage was because they were supposed to make the difference with tips. These other people make their own prices. They're not getting paid below anything and they don't deserve or need a tip. This is just another example of American greed. I'm so glad I left.

It is not necessary to tip someone who does services from home”kitchen stylists” they pocket it all, the exception would be an at home salon business that is legitimate and they have actual over head and so on they are not pocketing that money due to paying bills for their space. You can charge whatever you want when you do hair from your house and it is not legitimate and you crazy to pay for it. As a licensed cosmetologist there are rules and some folk don’t play by them, waiters and waitresses get tips, if you work on commission you should or of be tipped if you are salary no you should not be tipped and if you are self employed with no over head you should not be tipped

Tipping is optional I agree, but if someone provided me with a service I’m going to tip regardless of what’s going on with their money. If I appreciate a service I’m gonna show my appreciation. when I did my girlfriends hair at one time and she didn’t tip. I asked her why didn’t she tip me she said because we’re friends so I stopped doing her hair because me providing service is optional as well. Mind you I shampooed her hair. I fed her MY FOOD, she use MY phone. She used MY bathroom. She watched my TV and most of the time I either picked her up or took her home.

Uber Eats has the tipping BEFORE & say's due to the tip ur food may or may not come or on time which Matt tlkd about & that's beyond unacceptable & I feel that & the video's of pple tlkng shit over their tip & how ot 'wasn't enuf' is what killed any & every enjoyment in tipping & I concur. I'm in Atlanta, and her hairstyle is around 300-400. I paid 250 for jumbo braids, which was not a good experience; my friends told me I would have done a better job and to take it out 😂😂 I usually do my hair, but I was tired and wanted a professional. They definitely overcharge here, and I didn't tip, but I usually, if it's an excellent service but I do have tip fatigue and get tired of tipping especially when the price is already unreasonable

The “Subscribe” notification. “Knock knock knock! Engine sound revving up! Ding!” …. It sounds like someone at my door knocking and revving up engines and ding! It sounds like someone was outside of my house trying to get in. It’s annoying and it gave me anxiety. And it wouldn’t stop either, it would go off every now and then. It’s loud too. Idk. I’m torn. I think tipping culture is WAY out of control in the U.S., but at the same time, isn’t hair business kind of up and down in terms of receiving business? That tip could have helped especially if the braider does not have consistent business. Idk.

Tipping while it's optional has become a way of life for folks in the service industry. Also, keep in mind most persons in the service industry gets paid Lower wages I tip my barber and he makes more than 40 per hour. Obviously, you go where you know he or she has your best interests at heart. Now, that's a huge price tag; however, it took almost 8 years a full work day . We Just have to follow our hearts and of course poor service does not get rewarded with tip.. Finally, as a tiktok sensation you probably shouldn't bring this on especially since you gave so much accolades. Someone will now do a 100.00 briade and now uses your example as doctrine. We should endeavor to use our platform in the best manner always. Folks listen and sometimes makes decisions based on these post simply because you're influential somewhat. It if was poor service, she asked or bagger you for tips that would be different.
