FAQ
Q: What do the colors mean?
A: Colors are assigned according to pitch, in a system I call "harmonic coloring" (since it shows changes in harmonies). You can read more about this here:

A: The shapes indicate which instruments are playing:
strings: rhombus
brass: rectangle
oboe/bassoon: inverted ellipse ("star")
clarinet: octagon
flute: ellipse
timpani (and string pizzicato): fuzzy circle

Wonderful to see your animations of complex orchestral pieces like this, Stephen. Even with the best audio -- or in a live audience, for that matter -- one doesn't hear all the nuances, but with the animation they appear visually in a form more readable in real time than a complete score.

I grew up in an environment that despised Brahms for falling between over baked Beethoven and undercooked Wagner. A prejudice I resisted. But I do see the point of the prejudice in this particular rendition. It takes a master musician to bring out the most worthwhile in Brahms. And avoid the pedestrian.

Imagine growing up in an environment that has a particular opinion on Brahms beside "the lullabye guy". No hate, I'm jealous

@@samuellafleur6945 Yeah. Feels like that now with apple/amazon music assemblages of .... music product....I was lucky. I grew up in the "golden era" of classical music production and performance, in the 60's and 70's. Surrounded by musicians and one famous composer, and attending concerts at least every other day for the duration of my undergraduate days. Just lucky.

Very nice Brahms. Sorry for the following reminiscences. The timpani are close to my heart as I played timpani for 4 years in the high school symphony and 2 years in a junior symphony orchestra. I once had to play the Air Force song, known as Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder. The timpani were supposed to sound like jet airplanes. I don't think I pulled it off. We could have used at least 2 timpanists for that sound. That was 58 years ago.

This not a knock on your work at all, but I do think "watching the music" pretty much misses the point of what's going on from around 2:21 to the start of the ode to joy ripoff section

Oh, for sure. My animated graphical scores, like a conventional score, only show a fraction of what's happening.
