Bra making for beginners | Bra sewing and fabrics explained | answering FAQs about sewing bras

Are you a beginner to sewing bras? Confused about elastics and fabrics for bra-making?
Or wondering how to find your underwire size?
I’ve put together a little question and answer video on bra making for beginners. These questions came from my Instagram followers after I showed my last Black Beauty bra. The trouble is, there’s only so much you can say in Insta stories, so I thought I’d try to be a bit more in-depth here. We also take a stash dive through my lingerie fabric and bra-making fabric. I talk through the different types of elastic and fabrics. I keep on hand. I realised I completely forgot to talk about findings and closures, but I just buy the size of findings that corresponds to my strap elastic.
I’ve listed the pattern recommendations and shops I mentioned below. If anything is missing please give me a shout.

    Good video ive been bra sewing for 3 years now its addictive once u get the hang of it don't be discouraged by the fitting just keep going its trial and error and your judgement gets much better with time. For uk bra sewists bratastic fabrics is excellent for the prices and fast postage ive brought from her for years now.

    Thanks, Liz. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who has a good stash of lingerie fabrics, but have gone through iterations of bras not fitting you. I have no choice in that I cannot find a ready to wear besides sports bras, and actually have had surgery from ill fitting wires my whole working life. I, like others, just put up with it. But as sewists, we can create what we want or need. Thanks.

    Just started sewing underwire bras with the good fabrics. And its amazing! I am an unusual size that is very hard (if not impossible to find well fitted in RTW lingerie). Finally understanding why ladies get a bit addicted to DIYing their bras - you can have any color, style, and shape you want for the price of the materials if you learn to do it yourself. Which makes owning finely tailored lingerie within your grasp even if you are not wealthy. 😊

    Yes! Also I really enjoy the technical sewing on such a small project, you can have lots of bras without taking up much space in your wardrobe. Glad you got bitten by the bug too ☺️

    This is brilliant, thanks so much Liz. Really comprehensive. I have toyed with the idea of making a bra for so long and bought several bits and pieces including a Kit from Sew your own Wardrobe and downloaded the Harriet bra but just always felt nervous about tackling one! This video has really given me motivation and confidence to give it a go.

    Fabulous video…. It’s very difficult as a wannabe bra maker to actually know the best places to shop for supplies. I am on the long hunt for websites and suppliers. As i think its disheartening and quite off putting to try to make a bra or any garment really, where its the fabric or supply choices that let you down. So any other helpful suppliers or hints to look out for is always welcome in my book. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

    Thank you for this video, very well explained. Wish I’d seen it a year ago 🙂 I am still working on finding the best fit for my bra. I have two that are nice to wear but not perfect. After making four trials I am getting used to the materials, it gets easier with practise. With learning to make my own bra, I learned why most RTW didn’t fit me ... and even my second trial was better then any store bought. ❤️ I was so proud. Tips for newbe sewers: don’t start with black fabrics. It is hard to see what you do. My second trial I made with white fabric and red and pink yarn. This really helped getting more precise sewing done. Liz it was nice to see your stash and hear you love dying your own materials too.

    Thank you so much for this! I’m at the stage of researching and fully intend to make a bra very soon, great info on fabric and elastic types. Just one question, if you don’t mind, I’ve bought a couple of kits but don’t really want to dive straight in using the pretty laces, do you have a suggestion for non stretch toile fabric for a bra please?

  • @LizGrylls

    @LizGrylls

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you can use duoplex which is commonly used for non-stretch bras and is cheap enough for toiles I think. Duoplex is easily available in loads of colours and prints from sewing chest and BWear. I have even used quilting cotton for toiles.

    I did not know you could use food colouring - does it not wash out or do you have to do something special to make it stick to the fabric?

    It will fix if you use an acid as a mordant. I use Wilton gels and citric acid crystals which is an easy safe way to experiment with dyeing. The yellow bra I made has faded a little, but it's still pretty vibrant. Bear in mind it will only work on nylon and animal fibres though (wool and silk)

    How can you fix wire that pokes out of bra, I’ve sewed back multiple times but still keeps popping out

  • @LizGrylls

    @LizGrylls

    2 ай бұрын

    Are you sewing it with a sewing machine? Hand sewing isn't likely to work well unless you can manage to make the stitches really tiny (I tried myself the other day and the wire still popped out so I need to machine it). If the end of the casing is damaged and you have a hole, you might need to go over the area several times or even replace the channeling.

  • @NylahCosmetology

    @NylahCosmetology

    @@LizGrylls oh wow that is a lot! I’d have to replace the channeling because the rubber ends that’s usually on the wire is gone and the there is a hole! And idk how to do that without ruining the bra, I did it by hand I don’t own a hand machine haha I guess buying a new bra is more feasible lol

    It's called "Galloon Lace". If you search eBay for that you'll find some :) It will either be listed as stretch or rigid.
