BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1980's
On Board Locomotive 47341 From London Paddington - Maidenhead
27th June 1989
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip was taken on board with kind permission of Driver M Smith. (Reading Depot) from London Paddington en route to Reading (As far as Maidenhead) . Running alongside on the Down Slow with HST's whizzing past on the Fast lines, this clip just shows how bumpy the ride was up front of these 112 ton locos. I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

I think the 47 deserves a place in British history like the Spitfire, Mini and the full English breakfast.

Wonderful when you get a spirited driver!! Was very fortunate to have a Duff cab ride back in the 90's from B International to Stockport with a driver/Instructor together with a second Duff which was dead . That was the experience of a lifetime!! Also legally done . Thank you Ray

It doesn’t feel that long ago but what a radically changed scene. No Overhead Wires, No Heathrow Express, No North Pole Depot and no Old Oak Common Interchange station.

@@darrenhillman8396 No wonder it's so hard to get decent investment in the UK railways when even some "enthusiasts" can't stop themselves denigrating and moaning about everything new! Note Crossrail/Elizabeth Line which now dominates this route has been the biggest success for the railways since the HST was introduced, already it accounts for 15% of the whole country's passenger numbers. Also are you seriously arguing that building a fast rail link to Heathrow and electrifying the GWML haven't been massively beneficial? SPompey thanks as always for the nostalgia.

How things have changed! The OLE structures around Paddington really do obscure so much of the view from the cab - including the signals, and there is so much more development along the route now, so that some of it is almost unrecognisable in this video. Thanks for posting

The extent of the new development since then is indeed mind boggling. From Acton all the way out past Ealing to West Drayton looks almost rural by today's standards on this video. Station platforms pretty empty of passengers even though it's the evening rush hour. What a contrast to today's increasingly dense high rise development encroaching right up to the line pretty much the whole way to Slough. Of course this is linked in some way to the better more frequent trains on the route today making it an attractive area to commute from.

I had a cab ride in 47/3 once after missing my train, I knew the driver and was lucky to get into work only 5 minutes late, but the bounce of a single light engine was shocking, going through some reverse curves the loco lurched down on the outside of the cant. never had it when taking cab rides with 9 coaches on the back 33's 47's or class 50's.

You should have tried a 73 light engine, it really was hang onto your seat stuff as they were lighter & bounced all over the place.

@logbasher . I once had to act as pilot man to a Bescot driver on a 47 after my Class 87 was disabled at Nuneaton. This was on a Liverpool train. Approaching Weaver jctn I informed him the line speed over the jctn was 95 mph. That’s what I call a roll. Never in all my time on the railway did my heart go into my mouth as much as then.

I loved drivng 47s... but they leaked everything everywhere and that trait was passed on to their frankenstein children the class 57's ( one of which did a monumental loss of serc oil while en route from Stafford to Lichfield). Great video and memories
