At Franklin Field, lane 4 is lane 1 in terms of distance. Lanes 1-3 are used for Penn Relays and are shorter, but start farther back from the start.

I’m not sure exactly what you mean but it’s very old and historical, so probably a bit different than standard tracks today

The people at Penn initially wanted to add more lanes into the track probably because of Penn Relays, but because of the stadium and history, they couldn’t so they added them onto the inside, where they are shorter and start farther back. Lane 4 is lane 1 in terms of shape and distance
