Leo ran it right. Positioned himself well then timed his kick correctly. And didn’t fade, his kick was solid. Birnbaum just has leg speed at a different level.

I think he would have been better off taking it from the front. Birnbaum was counting on a tactical race where he could outkick them and he got it.

i think Birnbaum's longer stride was the decider more than leg turnover. Leo's leg turnover was faster than Birnbaum's in the early part of the home stretch, and matched Birnbaum's the last few strides.

That 'shh' gesture at the end of the race was what Cole Hocker did as he won the Olympic trials two years ago, passing up Matthew Centrowitz in the final stretch. It was a symbolic gesture to shush the online skeptics. Simeon Birnbaum was imitating Cole Hocker.

Phenomenal race... The verdict is in: Leo did everything right and crushed everyone except Simeon. He beat two double sub 4 HS milers in Hansen and Burns. Difference is that while Leo does have a national champion level kick, Simeon's kick is World Class. He has potential to develop into a 1500m World/Olympic medalist. Leo has 3:39 1500m speed and Simeon has 3:37 speed, all time great in US. Nevertheless, do not be surprised if Leo becomes the better Cross Country Runner at 10K distance. Lex will be in the mix for Cross Country as well.

Simeon Birnbaum is just incredible. This young man is scary good! Just a few days ago he ran 3:37 which is equivalent to a 3:54 mile. That would make him the third best western high school level miler not from east africa behind Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Alen Webb, and the best western 1500m runner ever after Jakob and Hobbs Kessler . Although Jakob ran his times as a 17 year old not an 18 year old. But the great thing is these young American distance runners has more depth than ever before which makes for a wonderfully bright future. Also this year unlike other years these kids all raced each other and no one avoided anyone. This has to be the greatest year ever in terms of depth of talent in the history of high school distance running.

Birnbaum reminiscent of a young Lasse Viren both in terms of physical appearance and strategic approach. Strategy and kick are deceptive, however, in that someone who is physically superior can generally win off a variety of strategies, and muster a better kick even with less "leg speed." I put leg speed in parenthesis b/c the term is often a misnomer when applied to a kick, where it is as much about how much you have left in your tank as it is about top-end sprint speed.

Dropping to the back of the pack and then making little bursts up to stay right on the edge of contention should the pace quicken without pushing the pace and then unleashing a brutal kick people can't hang with to seal the deal.

Simeon Birnbaum should be invited to so-called dream or Prefontaine mile that is always in Eugene at the end of the year. They usually invite one high school runner. That is where Alan Webb broke the American record. The race is later in the summer this year, but Jakob and all the best will be there so it will be crazy fast. If Birnbaum is invited to that race this year Alan Webb's mile record may go down 😊

Birnbaum is our american Jakobing. Hes 6ft tall, and has power to run with the best. Just needs better strategy. Cant wait to see the Stanford, NAU, Oregon battle soon

Let's take it easy on the Ingebritsen comparisons. He ran 3:30 at age 18 and was an Olympic gold medalist before he turned 21. Jakob is beyond human at this point.

Leo should have definitely tried to run a PR and run a 3:58 or 3:56 because he is without a doubt fitter than every other athlete there when running 2 3:39 1500m in 3 weeks in collegiate races. If he would have ran a race and hit his splits to run that, no one would be able to keep up with him and he would have won. Either way, it was a great, tactical, race and was very exciting to watch.
