Gotta say that at first it felt like it was more a split/collaboration than a group record. The EP was pretty coherent, but on the record, at first I was like « ok, this is julien’s song, this one is from Lucy and this one is clearly Phoebe’s. But at the end of the day, I think it comes more from the instrumentation and the production than the songwriting. Sure, the girls all brought something from their own career but overall, after a few more listens, I can definitely feel the boygenius vibe. It’s a pretty strong record. Not as groundbreaking as the EP for me but it really has strong songs. Would have give it an 8 personally. God I love to see those 3 together. Hope to catch them as soon as they come to France.

It's almost like a concept album devoted to the concept of making an album? We have "The Cure" song that mentions the band and uses their sonic aesthetic, the "Simon & Garfunkel" song that "borrows" the melody from their track "The Boxer," "Revolution 0" referencing the Beatles, John Lennon and Elliott Smith, the "Leonard Cohen" song that talks about him too, "Anti-Curse" is very similar to a track on Julien's Turn Out the Lights (not sure how intentional the was?), and then finally the album's last track is Letter to An Old Poet (which must be Phoebe's reference to Ryan Adams, especially the acidic break up lyrics) is a remake of Boygenius' own "Me and My Dog." And then there is the album title being "The Record." I'm not sure what they are trying to say with all these references but there are so many, it can't be happenstance. Throw in the album cover which could be an interpolation of Pearl Jam's iconic TEN cover (in the same way their EP cover referenced CSN), and Boygenius' Nirvana photos in Rolling Stone of course....Curious of others' thoughts on all that! I think Not Strong Enough and We're in Love are the song highlights.

The idea behind the name boygenius is that male-led bands can be 'pretty good' and shoot to stardom and critical acclaim, so I think it comes back to that. Even though they admire those artists, they're also spoofing them or drawing comparisons with them intentionally as a fuck you to imposter syndrome and the fact that women are called geniuses much more sparingly.

One thing I'm a little concerned about is that Phoebe's songwriting is getting a bit stale. I feel like it's a similar delivery, structure and cadence every time. You know it's a Phoebe song almost immediately, which I guess is nice that she has a distinctive style, but it's getting a little same-y. I rarely ever feel like I'm going to be surprised, even though it's a solid track.

This album should have been great but it turns out to be just good. Each of the latest solo projects from Phoebe, Lucy and Julien are better than "the record" I think. Maybe this album takes time to grow on you, but at the first listen you can't get away with the feeling that you heard most of these tracks on their prevous projects but they were more superior. Anti-Curse, for example, is like a b-side that didn't make it to Little Oblivions. Agreed with strong 7 though

My feelings exactly. The way it is sequenced you can clearly hear it go from Julien song, to Phoebe song, to Lucy song and repeat. Julien’s contributions being the loud cuts (a clear progression on the direction taken on Little Oblivions), Phoebe’s being dark/broody ones (like the quieter moments on Punisher, like Halloween) and the Lucy’s being somewhere in between (similar to the feel of Home Video). It would have been better for those lines to have been blurred a bit more and it not being obvious who the lead songwriter is, rather than it sounding like them each just providing guest vocals on each other’s solo tracks.

There’s a line in one of the songs that talks about liking somebody less the more you get to know them, and that’s an apt analogy for how I feel about this album. I liked the couple of tracks I’d heard in various playlists before finally sitting down with the album recently. Once I did, I felt like it was nice enough while it was on, but it was so safe and predictable that nothing really stuck once it ended
