The opening line of A&W mentions how she hasn’t done a cartwheel since she was 9 and I thought it was just a weird lyrics. But my gf pointed out how girls become self-aware they can’t play in a certain way when they’re becoming adolescents. I thought it was interesting, this album is full of those moments of life through the lenses of a woman. Certainly more mature reflecting on those moments

A+W hit me a lot harder than I ever thought it would. The light whispery vocals on the intro talking about her self image and then leading into her need for affection and physical love trying to cover that shame was really heartbreaking. The fact she feels trapped and doomed to repeat that cycle of behavior without a way out really broke me. The sheer vulnerability of the lyrics and emotions throughout the track really puts the idea of brokenness on full display in a way that makes her so human

Sorry hun, she has always portrayed herself compellingly... you just didn't get it.
This album is such a grower and it's so dense and deep. I keep discovering more and more layers to it as time goes by. Fingertips is my favourite. I think she's outdone NFR with this - the artistic growth and freedom is on a whole other level. This is an easy AOTY for me.
it’s rare that i appreciate every album from an artist but i love her discography so much. as iconic as her debut was and still is, i feel that the ldr facade fades with every album which is why every release feels like such a step up. don’t get me wrong im a MASSIVE UV and honeymoon fan but from 2019 onwards i’ve felt an undeniable shift in her music. she’s always written about heavy topics but i think it’s safe to say (as much as she likes to deny it lol) that she sang from the perspective of a very curated persona. the more that ldr character is laid to rest, the more fleshed out and personal the music feels. i don’t think she’s ever been as vulnerable as she’s been on this album and i really appreciate it.

@@user-gu1un7pb7k Better by what definition? I think her work from 2012-2017 felt more varied, and like she was doing something different each album. With these new albums, while the writing may be stronger, the music itself often goes to the wayside, and feels less unique. Lots of the same instruments being used, and at a moderately consistent volume, too. There’s some exceptions, like Grandfather and The Trio, but a lot of her music since 2019 has seemed to be slower and more quiet. I will say, however, that this album is an improvement from her 2021 releases. I’m worried that I’ll still like Arcadia from Blue Banisters more than any track on this album, but the three singles were already quite promising. Margaret is one of the most beautiful song I've ever heard, and I'm a Bjork fan.
"Did you know that there's a tunnel under ocean blvd" has been the lana album I needed to give the more re-listens to process and discover, it's pervaded with deep lyricism and prodound topics in a way that makes it less accesible and "agreeable" than NFR. It's a step foward into development as an artist and making the most genuine output of songs ever. it reminds me of the great qualities of the single "Blue Banisters" with its dense poetry, beautiful narrative, soft instrumentation and diary like lyrics. It has to be said how Lana really embraces her nuances and even oddities and translates them into her music, she isn't seeking commercial sucess in this one. Is just an expression of being. Whether Lana continues in this route or not, I'm very excited for the future.

She looks like she's thinking, "They told me 5 minutes. We're doing this for FIFTEEN minutes, really? You're so full if shit, you're gonna go on like this for 15 full minutes? You know what, whatever. Can you hold your phone up for me? No? You are so full of yourself. Still talking? Did you even listen to that song? That's not what I meant at all! Ugh, I hate wall gigs"

@@christiangado1832 Imagine calling anything from Bjork and Rina mediocre. Flaws? Sure, most albums by all artists tend to have flaws, particularly with music being subjective so whether you notice or are affected by them more than others is up to the individual listener. But to outright state mediocre is to seriously be inept at understanding their artistry and what they have contributed to the industry. Especially Bjork who at this point is a legend and has a catalogue that will stand the test of time regardless of whether you like it or not.

I went to her LA To The Moon tour in Dallas TX and surpsringly it was a pretty diverse crowd, everyone from teenage girls, young women and gay men, which were the largest demographic, and then it's just everybody ranging from metal heads and kombucha sipping folk music hippies.

“I’m a different kind of woman” -Anthony Fantano, 2023
jesus crhist the song peppers is so catchy, insane she out did all her older hip hop blend songs with this one banger wow and on this album as well
listening to this album feels like reading a book to me. it’s a lyrical masterpiece and so enjoyable if you take the time to really listen to it.
Margaret is such a beautiful track too holy cow. The sense of hopefulness and eventually being complete with your significant other that you truly love and the love that Lana has for her friend Jack while celebrating such a beautiful feeling and occasion with him just melts me every time!

Viewing the 3 last tracks as “bonus” of a supposedly deluxe edition makes much more sense now (although I do love fishtail as well, “you wanted me sadder” is a true Lana gem)
Two 9/10 rated albums in a row, big up 2023 fr
Man this feels so surreal. This is probably the first time I felt actual happiness from a review / rating of yours
i’m still salty that you gave Born to die a 3 and ultraviolence a 2. but thanks for this well deserved 9.
This might be my favorite album of hers. I just love it, ever since NFR she's done nothing but bangers. Paris Texas is so perfect to me I can play it over and over again
this album slaps hard as heck
Yellow flannel and Lana del Rey, I thought the day would never come

was expecting a high 7 to low 8 so i’m pleasantly surprised!
This album somehow feels like a follow up from NFR. But that’s maybe due to the fact that ever since it’s release NFR it’s in heavy rotation for me but the closing track with Venice Bitch made this feeling even stronger. Lana is paving her way into Icon status beautifully. Not to mention that it’s so great being a fan of hers she is always making music and the best of it is because she loves doing it and for me this is one the greatest characteristics an artist can have. Music for the love of it :)
I love how spontaneously shocking she's becoming. She wrote a lot to get to this point. She still plays with characters to convey her feeling, but seeing her this candid... it's so dark it's refreshing. She's never deviated from her passion.
Loved this record so much! It's so personal. And I loved Taco truck, how silly the lyrics were. It felt like a break from the heavier songs before it. Didn't like the VB part that much though, but I appreciate the reference as she used to close the shows on her NFR tour with VB and now it's rumored that she'll tour again, so putting the song she closed her shows with on her last tour as the final song on the record released before going on tour again, feels right. And this album is all about references. My second fav after UV! My top 5 are: A&W, Candy necklace, Taco truck (without VB), Fingertips, Deep sea fishing.
Let The Light In is my favorite song of the year so far, honestly this is my AOTY so far along with the Caroline Polachek album

i think its absolutely crazy that she just did the vocals for paris texas and took the song from smyl. there is literally nothing that was changed. insane how it flows so well with the rest of the album and that the piano piece by smyl was a perfect background/instrumental for a song
Does anyone else find it extremely satisfying to hear fantano say his classic outro starting after the “tran..sition”? The “forever” always gets me ngl
A masterpiece imho, especially if you've followed her development as an artist, a persona, a person, are subsequently predisposed to this type of wrenching confessional style and, of course, willing to invest the attention it takes to really marinate in this emotionally dense and personal work.
Let the light in and Margaret are like my favorite songs ever lol

I love this album so much. I feel like Lana does a very good job of growing with her fans. I think that lot of us started listening to her in our teen years, in which her music was what we were looking for, even if now looking back, they seem immature. But we were immature. And now, most of us are women, thinking about family, if we want it, if we can have it. For me, even the religion - finding god but struggling with the downfalls of church. This album hit me right where and when i needed it, and I really think that lot of people following her for some time will feel the same. 10/10 for me personally

yeah I'm so gratefully that her music grows with my age and experience. and it just comforts and enlightens me in the right time❤
It's nice seeing people struggle to understand the album, since her point it's to very much defy the concept of a well structured and rounded album. For me, she's clearly having a lot of fun adding a lot of mistakes and experiments (since the album opens with a mistake). Fingertips has no chorus, there are 2 interludes of people speaking for 4 minutes, she mixes 2 different songs twice for no reason, she simply doesn't care about a traditional analysis and criticism of what a good album is. And yet the album is beyond excelent.

THAT’s WHY SHE IS THE QUEEN OF ALTERNATIVE MUSIC
This album's essence eluded me on the initial listen, but delving deeply into the lyrical labyrinth unveiled the masterpiece it truly is.
Finally I’m allowed to enjoy more Lana Del Rey music
I didn’t love it at first but I feel like this is tied with Ultraviolence for my fave Lana era
Oh my god!!!! Light 9!!!!! I did a first time reaction and I’m so glad I did because it makes me appreciate the work more ❤ I low-key wish I got the vinyls for her last few albums but the pandemic really made me dissociate from things I love such as music which I only realised recently

I do agree, it really felt almost like a throwback for those last 3 tracks, and I truly feel they are there for that exact reason, considering how this is an introspective album, and with Lana, we all know she loves nostalgia and I almost feel like its an ode to the music that started it all.
Seems unlikely it’s intentional but not impossible, but the Judah smith interlude reminds me of the preacher interludes “windows” on deafheaven’s sunbather and “destinos” by have a nice life. I think the final line featured is the most important element, the “my preaching is mostly about me” whether that’s mirroring her feelings about her work or being critical of the self-centered preacher
This album is her Astral Weeks! I think I like it even more than Honeymoon (my previous favorite Lana album)! Glad you rated it so highly! 😁
Trump getting indicted and now Lana getting a 9/10 from Melon…wow today is MY day
I really believe this album will get Lana her first Grammy win. Album of the year it song if the year for ‘A&W’. This is by far my favorite LDR album!
It's funny because Lana and Death Grips are my top 2 in music I listen too, now I feel validated in how good they both are!
Margaret is so fucking beautiful I don’t know how I didn’t like my first listen of that song. Now I can’t help but tear up every single listen
A 9 FOR LANA I KNEW THIS DAY WOULD COME
The fact that he gave a high score for a Lana album that is mostly palatable to long time fans is amazing. Lol
So cool that Anthony decided to check out Lana's solo stuff after hearing that song she did with Taylor.

tbh 2023 has been such a good year for music. and we ain't even halfway through
I skipped Chemtrails and Blue Banisters because i wasn't feeling her music and the whole "question for the culture" open letter. I did listen to both two times tho but still i pretend those don't even exist so i don't remember the themes on those albums but with this newest one she shows me a whole different side of her. As a long time fan, ever since Born to Die, i'm so pleased to see such personal music from her. For years her character was one dimensional, we couldn't get a whole picture of who she is. So seeing her sing about her family made her more human and less like a Hollywood character to me
I agree with this rating but tbh I don't think Fantano really fully understands the point of this album or what Lana is trying to do...
