Boyfriends: The Gay webtoon LGBT hate

Ойын-сауық

Boyfriends the webtoon...... I'm not going to lie, I honestly don't see a problem with it?
Just before I get hate, i'm pansexual so I at least have some level of gay card to talk about this type of stuff. I did also interviews with plenty of people in the community before I wrote the script, so I'm pretty positive in my assertions.

I think part of the reason everyone hates this comic for having "simple" characters is because everyone this generation seems to be obsessed with story-driven things. Which isn't a bad thing, I am myself too. It just seems like most people hate it whenever something doesn't have some underlying meta plot they can make theories about or some angst stuff. One of the most annoying takes people have for this series is the "Goth is a Transgender Stereotype." complaint, its dumb. It stems from the fact that he has "transgender qualities." ie. talking about his binder and having the trans flag. That is not a stereotype, he's just trans. And the only time he's ever talked about being trans (as far as i remember) is in the pride month chapters let me repeat, that the PRIDE MONTH chapters. edit: also this is the first time ive actually seen the ads for it, and holy shit those lines were supposed to be satirical wtf, *especially* the chocky milk one. i swear webtoon is the one sexualizing these characters, not the author.

Really glad to see a more nuanced and neutral take on this. Sure Boyfriends doesn’t have any depth to it and it’s extremely (often painfully) campy, but the amount of hate it gets is ridiculous. There’s nothing really problematic about it. Really feels like a lot of people in the lgbtq community don’t know what they want in terms of rep these days. Healthy romance? Trivializing and stereotypical apparently. Romance with some unhealthy aspects/personal baggage? Romanticization of abuse apparently. It feels like there’s just no winning for big lgbtq+ creators. Yeah, I don't get the hate either. Taking anything the author (I'm not really familiar with him other than he created "boyfriends") has done before aside, I don't understand the controversy. Sure you can criticize the writing and lack of drama at times but it's not like those are reasons to "hate" something. I don't consider the comic offensive in any way, it honestly seems to be a bit of a stretch to see it that way, so it comes down to if you don't like it don't read it. From everything I heard (which aside from this video and reading the entire first season of the comic itself, isn't much) it doesn't harm anyone. when i went into boyfriends, i went in purely because of the polyamorous rep (i myself am polyam, as well as non-binary and sapphic), which essentially doesn’t exist anywhere, so i was excited to see something like a webtoon centered around a polyamorous relationship. after the first three or so episodes, it became very clear that the webtoon was based on stereotypes, but as far as i was aware and felt, not LGBTQ ones. i assumed from that point that the entire schtick of boyfriends is stereotypes, except they’re your typical highschool clique stereotypes: jock, nerd, prep, goth, etc, and im fine with that. they’re in every high school coming of age movie, so i was more or less like “hey! high school groups personified that’s kinda neat” and i went on enjoying it more or less and then i went online and. bruh (the ads are fucking shit tho lmfao)

I've seen folks complain that Prep is a gay stereotype when funnily enough he isn't. He's a Prep stereotype which just happens to fall in alot of similar slots as the effeminate gay man. The characters are all stereotypes of their social group and title But even if this wasn't the case, why is it so bad for him to be effeminate? It's not like he's the only gay character in the comic, he's literally with three other guys who don't act like a flamboyant diva boy. Yes folks shouldn't use only gay stereotype characters to represent us but if they aren't the only gay character I really don't see an issue. He liked fashion, liked musicals, he was a huge diva, knew his wine ( I DO NOT SUPPORT UNDERAGE DRINKING BUT WE ALL WERE YOUNG AND STUPID ONCE), had dominantly girl friends ( his best friend was a girl who was supper into fashion too and she was a huge ball of sunshine and TV star energy) and generally was a nice guy. We were not very close, but I know that girls in his friend group did not see him as 'a token gay'. He was just a friend. We lost contact, sadly, but from all of my guy friends he was one of the funniest to be around, cause we shared an interest in fashion and our musical tastes were similar so we often discussed high end fashion shows and music albums.

One thing that's not talked about is how the author is from SEA, a fairly LGBT-hostile environment. I live in Asia, so I can see why the author is clumsy at handling gay/trans/poly people despite being a gay transmasc, there isn't a lot of material you can go over. A lot of Korean BL webtoons I saw, although there are some gems out there, are pretty fetishy. I never saw a Korean slice of life BL webtoon since most of them are sexual and/or dark. If anything, the whole webtoon feels like an escapist work so the author can be loved without being judged for his gender or sexuality. I've seen so much comments of the author is 'a fujoshi who's faking to be trans and gay' which is... violently anti-LGBTQ. It's ironic to see people fall back on their own rhetoric of the author being transphobic and homophobic. This backlash may be pushing the author to not research more because he'll associate valid criticism to the cancel group. The mob anger is understandable, a lot of people are disappointed the most popular gay comic is Boyfriends when there is other literature or comics with better writing, but I think flat out slander crosses the line. Personally Boyfriends is not my taste, the writing is flat compared to other slice of life I've seen. But I think the hate is overblown and callous, to not take in account of how different SEA is compared to more progressive countries.

What confuses me when people dislike Boyfriends is, have they never heard of romcoms? Or newspaper comics? Media that's just meant to be simple and fun? The characters are simple because you're supposed to be able to jump in and understand the general cast right away. It reminds me of monster high or shows like that, which isn't a bad thing. I also don't understand when other LGBTQ people are actively seeking out chapters to dislike as if it's bad. IDK man I'm from a small very anti-LGBTQ village so growing up I would've loved Boyfriends and content like it, it's good escapism and just lighthearted. If it was more heavy and went into depth on the trauma queer people face it wouldn't be the same story and wouldn't do what it does best. A lot of the dislike people vocalize for it feels like trying to change the story into a different genre of story they would like better. When in reality there is value in the story just as it is right now, it's cute and sweet and something I can recommend to LGBTQ youths in my community alongside stuff like Owl House and other friendly media, its important

  • @khimjardin6482

I agree with this. It's an escapism work meant to lighten up the mood. If it were to deep dive into the reality of coming out or being a queer person, it would mostly have a painful, traumatic, and unbearable storyline. Most, if not all, live in a society where homophobia is prominent. Much more inside a household. It's rly to escape from reality. The more it is shown in works like this that being a queer person isn't even a "bad" because of how healthy it is being presented, it will be normalized soon as more and more ppl get exposed to healthy stories

They love to sabotage representation of people in our community... I thought we fought for our rights because we don't want to be put in a small box by straight cis people... but it seems like we have become our own enemies and oppressors... lgbt people have now felt so entitled as to decide what's acceptable and what's not acceptable... At this rate, they are no longer different from homophobes... Instead of actually fighting and combating the people who oppressed us for who we are, discriminated us for our lifestyles, and are strongly against our existence (ie homophobes, Transphobes, anti-LGBT)... it seems like the people of the lgbt community is more busy attacking their own fellow lgbt and wreaking havoc on medias representing the different people of the community (just because it didn't meet their standards).. truly disappointing... The LGBT community have truly become wayy too toxic... We shouldn't expect respect and acceptance from others especially when we cannot even provide it towards people within our community... We really need to figure our shit up... This is the reason why instead of gaining respect and acceptance from people we are just getting more blatant hate... because we tend to put more hate on each other instead of having each other's back because we are fellow lgbts. majority of people from the LGBT community just loves to over complicate things, make everything an issue, are too perfectionist and demanding, are against of even the tiniest little flaws even tho all of us have those, wants everything to be pleasant and doesn't want to see a little bad side... All of this makes the community so toxic Nowadays... we all can't gain acceptance and respect from people if we cannot fix these very immature and toxic things majority of members from our community have always keep on doing... It's cute guys doing cute things, it's there to make you happy. Not every piece of LGBT+ media needs to be layered and deep and blah blah whatever. This it a cute comic about young men who love each other. And "pandering to fujoshi..." okay... I'm a cis gay man. I read a lot of MM romance novels. There would not be a market for those novels without cishet women who like to read them. Sorry, it's true. I acknowledge that there is a weird type of fujoshi that needs to insert herself into a weird fantasy space where men hook up specifically for her enjoyment, but that's definitely the minority. Most fujoshi are just horny ladies who want to consume content where boys kiss each other, and there's not a goddamn thing wrong with that.

My main gripe with Boyfriends is that the plot and humor are the same quality as one-shots despite being moved to webtoon. The conflicts are currently way too simple to justify the length of a full webtoon chapter (or multiple) because everyone gets along way too well, and the humor also does not make use of the longer format (e.g. “choccy milk” and “no we just had sex for stress-relief” are not jokes that require any setup beyond maybe one additional sentence). There’s also no room to develop their romance further because they speedran that in the first 30 chapters or so.

The webtoon is what it is, it's cheesy and extremely focused on being cute but why would that be such a big issue? not your cup of tea? cool. Close the tab, open a new one and search something else to read. I honestly feel bad for the author the amount of hate they received is uncalled for, totally unnecessary if people only had the ability to mind their own business. Honestly, the only reason that I see it's hated so much is that it's popular and cringey. People are so very often not this opposing or even resentful of such stories that aren't (as) popular. While the story/characters are boring, simple, shallow and the representation is questionable to say the least, those traits have been HEAVILY observed and experienced throughout other stories, but due to their small fanbase and lack of prominence, the problematic traits are never the focus of the readers, even when it's about characters of marginalized groups or minorities. The criticisms about this webtoon comic are very fair, but the hate is being blown out of proportion simply because it stood out and is continuously being advertised as well, and more on, the cringey parts are further emphasized and shown while everyone just blatantly ignores the rather neutral or even nice bits it possesses, as scarce and untimely they may appear. And on the other hand, it's seen as something that is "it looked good, but it let us (lgbtq+ folks) down" and that's what the community keep making it as. Apart from other stories that are factually and irrefutably offensive, insulting, fetishizing, trivializing, stereotyping and gross, in which people just ignore it because "it's problematic so I won't even bother with it, because obviously, this story is a problem already and I'll just move on to consuming media that are actually good". I get that Boyfriends is a well known thing and lgbtq identities are being portrayed in something that so many people can see within media and it can open up a possibility to making such people with said identities be compared and equated to it. But it remains a fictional story, with childish characterization that people need to stop acting like one person or a few defines others as a whole, like some extreme collective categorization and observation (same goes for most things in media tbh). Hating it is really a bit much, when it's just some goofy ass plain slice of life, with added rainbows and bits of immaturity, literally not some book of the damned or a sociopathic bigot's diary regarding how society should be shaped in the image of their perspective TL;DR - people hate this story because it's popular, lame and embarrassing most of the time (not to mention, the internet grows more and more critical from/about/towards queer discourse), but so what? it's not decent, yes, but it ain't some horrible shitshow. Boyfriends is stupid, not awful (but that's mostly my opinion from what I've experienced anyway)

I have not read Boyfriends since I've been occupying myself with EiF, Winter Moon, Ugly Princess Club, and Lore Olympus although it has been circulating throughout Twitter in a bad way to the point where people would just be homophobic. Normally I thought the webcomic would produce rabid fans since it has the same aesthetic to wholesome-like media such as Animal Crossing but that was wrong. Based on a few panels of the webcomic, it seems so wholesome and harmless yet almost everyone despise it while Heartstopper also has the same vibe and everyone praises it. This can also be said about the stigma of mlm (Gay) and wlw (Lesbian) content where many would give wlw a pass but condemn mlm for the same thing. If Ray or any CC did a webcomic named Girlfriends with the four side characters, chances are it'll be more accepted than its male counterpart.

NO, I am asexual and have a sex drive. Asexual is the lack of sexual ATTRACTION, not libido. Some asexuals have high libido, and some allosexuals (people who are not asexual) have low libidos. Sex-favorable/sex-positive asexuals exist, and they're not just the demisexuals. Asexuality is a spectrum, and people who are asexual may choose to have sex for many different reasons including enjoying the closeness with their partner, wanting to please their partner, or even just enjoying the experience. The best way that I can describe it is similar to experiencing hunger. You might not be hungry and thinking about getting food, but someone might offer you a bag of chips. You accept the bag of chips because the chips taste good. Same with with being asexual. You might not be thinking about people in a sexual sense and feel attracted to people with the desire of having sex, but you can still enjoy doing it. Yes, many asexuals are sex-repulsed, but again, asexuality is a spectrum. Thank you for coming to my TED talk, and please hear more from asexual people.

They're actually really healthy they communicate when something is wrong and ask for help when needed And when I explain that to those people on TikTok they say "Well but the comic is too shallow and doesn't have any important subjects" but like it's just a comic about people loving each other not every comic needs angst to be good and if they don't say that they usually say they don't like the creator but like you don't need to pay him to read his comic unless you want to you can just read the free ones

as a lgbtqia+ member, I don't really hate this. Like on the contrary I like it very much. I mean it's comforting thanks to the slice of life genre, it's kinda soothing and in my opinion, what makes it nice is its simplicity (characters, plot, art). there aren't 2k characters to remember with their story and everything so I just feel like it's wrong that people expect so much from something that is made to be simple. the "cringe" can also be cute and funny sometimes as it's easy to read the situation. In conclusion: I still don't get why it gets so much hate, I would just suggest that the people who want deep complex series read something else, there's no need to show hate that much, because that may also hurt Ray, when they just do something they like. If you don't like it, don't go around saying "it's bullshit" "I hope they die" etc bc that's what haters do and that really might hurt them. Thanks

As someone who is pan, genderqueer, and on the ace spectrum (grey ace), I really don't find what's wrong with this comic. Obviously Webtoon has its issues, just like Twitter, KZread, Instagram, TikTok, and basically any other social media platform. When interacting/using any of those platforms, you accept the pros and cons of them. With Boyfriends, they use Webtoon to support their comic, and I'll put it bluntly, they're thriving off of how Webtoon supports a lot of BL or "fujoshi"/"manhwa", and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. They benefit from it and that's how they support themselves, so I'm not gonna shame them for that, cause I see plenty of other people doing the same thing with their work. It sucks, but you do what you gotta do, we're all guilty of it in one way or another. With the plot itself, yeah, it is dull, but that's what I kinda like about it, it's simple, short, and sweet and gives a boost of serotonin to my day when I need it. Brain no think hard, and I get to have a break from the overstimulation of just- everything. The ace representation for Goth doesn't bother me at all really, I mean, I'm aroace, and it's easier to say I'm just ace, or use an aroace flag with the ace flag in it. Plus the sexuality ace, is an umbrella term, so it can and is used as a broad stroke for those who are on the ace spec. With the other stuff about the creator, yeah, it sucks, and it does, cause slurs are never okay, but it seems that they've done this many years ago, and haven't done it since. I'm personally not one for cancel culture in the sense that someone did something bad, like saying a slur, a long time ago and has never done it since and has changed. People change, even more rapidly now with societal advancements and technology, not saying this as an excuse, but more of pointing out what (I would hopefully assume) is the obvious. Overall, I love the comic, it gives me a break from the world, it's not doing any harm, rather than pandering to Webtoon to get awareness, and when goth was represented as trans and was able to not wear a shirt for the first time, it made me feel really seen.

I really don’t understand why people hate the webtoon so much 😭 I feel really bad for Ray, he constantly gets death threats and people hating on both him and his comic, even though it’s just some simple fluff based on popular stereotypes. Sure, it doesn’t have much plot. It’s a slice of life. What slice of life normally has a big plot attached to it?? Also I’m ace, but I’d also have s-x with a partner to make them happy, it’s pretty common for us to do that and the people getting mad “on our behalf” are mostly people who are not ace themselves. I will admit the ads are really bad tho, but honestly webtoon ads have been getting more and more problematic recently, and creators of the actual comic unfortunately have no say in what webtoon promotes and when (I’m an assistant to an originals creator, they constantly complain about how horrible webtoon is at communicating with creators before promoting) and Ray was really frustrated with webtoon after the animated ads bc no one had asked him about it first or worked with him so that it wouldn’t have ended up so cringe

13:13 while yes, asexual is an umbrella term for many identities, some of which do experience sexual attraction, I would like to point out that sex drive and sexual attraction are not the same thing. I’m not sure if you meant it to sound like that, but with how you used the word sex drive in the previous section, it makes it seem like you’re using the words as synonyms. The difference is very simple. Sexual attraction is exactly what it sounds like: sexual attraction to another person. Sex drive on the other hand is a simple physical reaction that has nothing to do with attraction to other people. It’s how horny you are on a general basis. You can want to have sex or feel horny without being attracted to someone. Sometimes our bodies just decide to be horny out of nowhere and that’s completely normal. Things like the menstrual cycle and hormones in general can cause this.

ANYWAYS i didn’t want to make this too long TwT. But thankyou for actually having an honest, adult take on this, honestly i adore Ray, and his work, i can understand why people may think it’s boring, but Jesus- im depressed enough i don’t need any drama or dark shit to make something interesting (neither should anyone tbh) its cute, heartwarming, sweet, and funny, and it emphasizes the feelings i have for my partners, not only that Ray himself is really sweet, ive had multiple chances to talk to him, and he’s very kind, but im not dick riding, i do adore him and his work, but I’m understand it might not be for everyone, im just glad someone has common sense about it. here's my problem with this comic, this might seem all over the place so take this with a grain of salt, boyfriends isn't bad because of its stereotypes and how it handles mlm, its the fact that it uses language that children would use (aswell as just having infantilization in it in general) and also introduces literal children (im talking about 9-12 y/o's here, but this can be said for anyone under 18) to it, while having s-xual themes. from my angle, i would describe this as fetishizing child-like behaviour. i get that its supposed to be fluffy and cute or whatever but you can't put 'choccy milk!' in a comic that has suggestive/s-x scenes in it. and the fact that most of the characters look white but are supposed to be asian seems a lot like white-washing. take prep for example (im singaporean so i can speak about this directly) not many asian people have light skin like he does and blonde hair. alot of us have darker hair, and there is no distinguishable features that make him look asian at all, it's very westernized. i feel like alot of people are just looking at the fact that its 'bad lgbt+ representation!!' and not paying attention to the underlying issues with it.

Im also singaporean, and I don't think it's white washing at all. It's Animated and stylized heavily. I can make characters with diff colour hair, unconventional eye colour, call them singaporean, and I'll believe it(ofc if they put other traits lah abuhden). Bc its just cartoon after all.

@@gilliantoh4658 i get that it's supposed to be stylised, but isn't it still possible to show some racial diversity? the one goth gf is the only person in the entire comic close to looking like an actual POC and it's just because of her skin tone

@@cherwhiskey i mean, not all the charas are singaporean, and it's like, if you grew up chinese and everyone around you are chinese, you'll end up drawing and writing more experiences as chinese. Similarly maybe the author was like that as an indonesian? Chinese indonesian? Indonesian that happens to be surrounded by other indonesians who look like that? We don't know what influences them nor can we judge. Like even in sg there's also fairer malays, even for me as a chindian. My cousin, brother and myself range from pale to dark and we're all the same mix of chindian. So I personally feel you can't necessarily judge by skin tone alone, nor can we properly apply it to something as stylized as this. It's not really worth fighting for. Ofc we all love diversity, but what if ppl may be anxious in portraying a race not their own if they do not have that experience? Then lagi end up kena flame. There's nothing much wrong with someone creating art based on even their small familiar worldview.

oh thank god I found a nuanced look at this. during my admittedly short webtoons phase I read Boyfriends and thought it was fine, cute fluff with some quotable scenes even if it wasn't great. then like a year after I stopped using the app I couldn't escape the hate for it and since then I've felt guilty about somewhat enjoying it for a time. I'm not exactly a stranger to missing questionable undertones just because I tend to have a hard time picking up n subtext if I'm not looking for it, and... lbr Boyfriends isn't exactly the type of thing you look for subtext in. I tend to get anxious about stuff like that though and I couldn't find anything that gave me a concrete answer as to why this old guilty pleasure was so awful. so anyway, what I'm saying is thanks for not hate baiting and just telling me straight what's been going on 😅

Personally, I don't like the webtoon. The ads are cringe and some people might like that, that's on their agenda but not mine. About the race representation, as an asexual Asian, it's not the best and I can't lie about that. It could've been better. Although, I heard some people saying the characters are all Korean while others say they were all different?? Frankly, I don't care anymore, I'm too tired on the race argument. Story wise, it's just a series of a boring one shot collection that's only fluff without of the mix of angst. I like the latter more but some don't and that's fine. It below average in terms of writing but still mediocre, I've seen worse. People saying that Ace can't be asexual because he had sex??? If he consented then it's fine and that's his choice, he's not aroace, he's entitled to his own life style as an asexual person. Asexual people can be in relationships whether its platonic or romantic, it depends on the spectrum you're in and boundaries. Stop putting the stereotype where asexuals dislike sexual and romantic needs, we are human and not some cold hearted beast. I still don't like the webtoon. I mean take what you get, at least that how I like to deal with shit. People can like and don't like certain stuff, it is none of my business to judge. Whether the creator is problematic or not, don't be surprised. You can call them out on their bullshit, in the end no one is perfect, so don't idolize people if you keep getting disappointed. It's funny to see people fall for the same thing over and over again, did you not learn the first time or second??? That's on you.

I think the hate is mostly directed at the animated versions with the voice acting: I don’t agree but I think that’s what it’s mostly coming from, they didn’t look at the comics only the animations especially with ‘preps’ tendency to make ‘cutesy’ noises; people didn’t like the voice acting because of that

I'm happy that someone researched this further because i used to like this comic series until it got this much hate. I don't find it that problematic honestly, the artist/the creator who made this has a nice art style. It's just that the stereo type as each main character is what's throwing it off, but other than that. People really should calm down on saying that this is cringe or giving so much hate into this because probably the creator of it just wanted to make something fun and cute, despite the repeated storyline in the story and them being on KZread ads the comic isn't that bad it's a decently made comic

i think a lot of people dislike the webtoon because of the author not the actual content, the style is really attractive to the eye and the story is easy to read/follow along with. But the creator is very problematic which sucks and it bleeds into the webtoon (like the fact that nerd is a cannon proshipper) most people who read the webtoon don't follow the artist on twitter and have no clue though. So a huge part of the fanbase is totally confused to why people hate on it lol it leaves everyone mad at eachother and really spiteful rip

I'm glad I saw this video, because for the last few months I've been feeling guilty for ever liking Boyfriends since I heard about the drama and stuff surrounding boyfriends and refrainbow. I found out about the drama shortly after pre-ordering the plushies related to the comic and I felt so bad about it that when they arrived i just hid them away. This video sort of reminded me why I liked the comic in the first place, it's a light hearted, silly comic that is meant to be stereotypical, and I don't think theres anything necessarily wrong with stereotypes because even if there are people who don't fit in those stereotypes irl there are also those who do and theres nothing wrong with that. This comic is just meant to be a lighthearted silly comic about polyamorous boys going about their lives and was basically just a nice little escape from my stressful life (the polyamorous part was actually what drew me to the comic in the first place, since I'm someone who believes i may be polyamorous myself(but I don't really know for sure since I've never been in a relationship with even just one person 😅))

The reason people hate it is because of the fetishization and stereotyping of a gay poly relationship and the constant promotion of it and its sometimes cheesey lines. Most people don't even know what the characters names are, they literally just call them Goth Jock Prep and Nerd because they're just stereotypes so their entire design and all really can't hook you. I read some of it and I couldn't read anymore because I was just too bored of it. I think Webtoon should promote better comics instead of gatekeeping boyfriends.

honestly the boyfriends webcomic is the webcomic version of relationship comics on IG. They're shallow, not really in depth, but they're innocent and sweet. It's the equivilent of brain popcorn. Sure, it has no plot but that doesn't mean it's bad. I read plenty of plot heavy things or sometimes I'm jsut having a terrible day and I just want to watch/read something that requires no thought and it's just sacchrine with no plot twist about how the world is actually crappy.

I read the entire comic up until the most recent update. It's definitely nothing groundbreaking. The story isn't amazing and there is basically no conflict, but that's the point. It's JUST a wholesome webtoon. Coming from a poly trans man, I don't see how it's problematic. It basically promotes a healthy poly relationship and people are mad about it? I get that the creator isn't the best person but when I first read the comic I had absolutely no clue about any of the things he had said/done. It honestly feels more like an attack on poly relationships, seeing as how there really isn't anything problematic in the story itself.

Not to be that guy, but the girlfriends do have distinguishable personalities from the boyfriends. It’s just their aesthetics or in the case of the preps - occupations they share. Granted, the girlfriends don’t get a lot of screen time, so I understand why someone might make this assumption. Other than that, as a fan of Boyfriends, I’m really glad to see a much more gentle critique of it.
