    Great video again and the series so far. As mentioned below, I believe you've found the problem so if it were me I would rebuild instead of replace assuming everything else is OK. Curious to see the IMS bearing condition.

    Enjoying this a lot, Aaron. I'll never be launching into a project like this myself, but it is rewarding watching somebody else do it! And if I ever need to have my 997 engine worked on, at least I'll have a pretty good idea of what is involved. Thanks, brother!

    I think I would repair and rebuild what you have already got. The alternative is getting a complete replacement motor I guess, but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to have that much confidence in a replacement unless you can thoroughly test it - ideally with it still running in the donor car - and that’s likely to be quite a bit more expensive.

    FWIW, there is a kit, that I wasn't aware of when I had my IMS bearing replaced, that involves replacing the bearing with an oil fed one with the oil being supplied from a modified oil filter mount. It also involves a slight modification to the bell housing. I don't know any other details but it was used by Edd on a Wheeler Dealers episode when fixing a 911. Should work on this engine too if bearing needs replacement.

    You probably even found the part that caused the cylinder cover to crack. My first assumption that this was the cause of the problem, is being confirmed more and more. As far as can be seen, the engine block looks good. No cracks to be seen. 😎 Cylinder liners also look good, no bore scoring recognizable. So far I see no reason NOT to repair the motor! 🥳

    The pistons were clearly hitting the valves, you can see the marks on the pistons` tops. Wonder what the valves look like. It`s also surprising that the valve didn`t break considering the car was running chain-less :)

  • @HelpMeDIY

    @HelpMeDIY

    +Fungaricum I’ve seen a picture of a new piston, and they are shaped like that… Mostly… I can feel a little ridge between the pistons, which I think is not normal, but only on Bank 1. I have a feeling the chain did not break until after the previous owner did his repair and tried to start it, but it never started.

  • @Fungaricum

    @Fungaricum

    @@HelpMeDIY yeah, maybe he didn`t set the timing right. The ridge is not normal, the piston top should be evenly covered in carbon. That`s a contact for sure. That does not necessarily mean the valves are bad though, they can withstand quite a bit of force without permanent damage.

    How do the valves look... have they been kissing the pistons? The broken lifter might have been caused by the valve meeting the piston and popping the center out of the lifter. It's killing me to wait for the next installments!

    You can actually see that the valves were contacting the pistons, there are clear marks on them.

    Yes, that was the first thing I noticed on the piston tops. There appears to have been a little interference. I was hoping he would've shown the valves on the heads. That punctured bucket tappet indicates that there's at least one bent valve. Ouch.

  • @Fungaricum

    @Fungaricum

    @@michaelskinner896 Once my boxster jumped timing and apart from those marks on the tops everything remained intact. Even the valves did not get bent. Looks like it`s small interference, indeed. This engine probably ran several revolutions with broken chain.
