that's because you see real people who don't mind being laughed at...that was their business. Check out some of the old Don Rickles clips on here lately. Absolutely hilarious but no way the guy could make a living today. So many of the bigger named starts of that era had been real people doing real things before they became celebrities: soldiers (Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Glen Ford, Tyrone Power, Ernest Borgnine, Burt Lancaster, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, director John Ford, Victor McLaglen, Jimmy Cagney, even somewhat younger Eastwood had done real stuff), merchant seamen, boxers, rodeo cowboys, stuntmen, lots of guys from the "school of hard knocks." That gave most of them a grounding and a certain humility, and made them believable on screen. Seeing Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin as tough guys from another century is not a stretch; it's easy to see. By contrast, watching Jeff bridges as Rooster Cogburn was a bit of a stretch for me, though his acting was good.
