I think another reason the box office is struggling, is that studios went all in on big budget franchises in the 2010s. A major reason was to chase the booming global box office especially Asia. In these international markets , mid-budget movies such as comedies, dramas did not have the same appeal, so studios focused on the likes of Transformers, Marvel, Fast and Furious etc. However,, as many of these franchises are now stuggling, + the decreased box office for US movies in China,. studios cannot rely on the mid-budget movies to pick up the slack. , as they have now trained people to watch these at home on streaming.

Cinema is facing potential collapse because you cannot uninvent streaming. Unless you shut down the telecoms network lol.. streaming is here for ever. This is biggest game changer since tv. Cinema adapted to face the threat of TV but now we're in a high inflation world so cinema can't compete with streaming packages that offer much more content at around half the price of a movie theater ticket. I can't see how cinema can survive. Well maybe Avatar 3 and a few other blockbusters will get people to go to the movie theaters but you can't rely on a few blockbusters per year to sustain the theatrical release industry.

@@YTguySmithy-lk6go , agreed. Theatres were able to cope with the television for a long time, as until recently a television at home had nowhere near the same picture or sound quality as the big screen. also, for decades, broadcast television was mostly sitcoms, sports, news and drama, that was not on the same scale as big buget or star driven movies. The likes of Game of Thrones and others have meant the production valules and budgets have caught up to movies

I agree that this is maybe a major factor keeping parts of the population out of cinemas. I live in London (UK) and currently I have two small cinemas within ~15 mins walk and at least two more larger ones within ~30 mins (at least one of which is right on one of my potential bus routes home from work, so I can easily go in the evenings after work then walk home). I'm not surprised people in small/medium towns or suburbs where the nearest cinema is a soulless multiplex an hour's drive away don't go to the cinema much. Opening more small cinemas in shopping/high streets seems like a no-brainer in places needing more commercial traffic due to online shopping taking away shoppers.

Even if Godzilla Minus One made another $2.7 million this past weekend (the amount it made a few weeks ago during re-release), it wouldn't have made a big difference in the Road to Recovery chart and overall super bowl weekend numbers. I think there is a generational change too, I remember when I was young in the late 90s and early 2000s, we used to go to the movies every month or so. But now the youth of today spend so much time playing video games, being on Tic-Tic, KZread etc, they are simply just not going out to the movies on a regular basis as they used to. Also, home entertainment / television picture quality is much better than 20 years ago. There is simply so much more entertainment available at home with out having to go out. Not to mention Steaming.

The cost is also more than double what it was to see a movie in the theater at that time. When movie tickets were $3-$5 (what it was when I was in middle school/high school in the 90s), you were more likely to take a risk on seeing a might not be so great movie. Now that tickets are $10+? People don't want to spend that unless they think the movie is going to be really good. Also, the entire experience has become less pleasant. Used to be, the start time was when the movie actually started. If you wanted to see trailers (and they only showed, like, two), you showed up a little early. Now, you get there on time and it's 30 minutes of trailers/ads, plus they make all movies 2+ hours these days, so instead of something that took up maybe two hours total if you include drive time is now an over three hour time commitment.

The Super Bowl drew 123.7 million viewers, the largest audience for any single broadcast event in US TV history! So, I'm sure that history TV audience was a massive part of why weekend movie theater attendance was down this weekend. Especially since, even though the Super Bowl broadcast is only a few hours long, there are pre and post games shows and so many people throw all day / all evening house parties on Super Bowl Sunday.

Maybe the problem is you don't go to the cinema and therefore don't see trailers for films like you would otherwise? And why would you go to the cinema? Well, streaming is killing the industry so if you like films maybe that's why. More for yourself, I think it puts greater importance on the film when you have to see it at a certain time and you have to focus on nothing but it. It's also a way to escape from the outside world. Too many people can barely sit through a movie anymore and spend half their time on their phones.

@@miz4535 Even pre-pandemic I wasn't going to the theater all the time. I was still VERY aware of what was coming out and when (generally). There was a sense of ramping up with marketing across the internet, television, heck even billboards and street signs. Algorithmic trends also end up not serving the right ads to the right people. With the collapse of Twitter, a lot of the idea of "trending" buzz is also falling away. I'm not as much blaming marketing teams as I am saying that the world has changed in ways that we can't seem to figure out. Barbenheimer sort of halfway lucked it's way into the zeitgeist beyond just being really well reviewed films. It cemented a MOMENT that was coming that we were generally paying attention to. And I never saw a trailer for either film in the cinemas. But they both grabbed a moment in time.

Well put. I think, Anyone but you, The Beekeeper, Mean girls, Equalizer, Conjuring, Insideious, other horror, thrillers and dramas have constantly shown how mid and small budget movies need equal space with big budget to sustain box office and not just to streaming, Netflix, being the big giant needs to contribute in that too. Theatrical success boosts streaming numbers, pvod, DVD, bluray numbers, it has been proven.

I will definitely be watching Dune, most likely in IMAX, but I haven't gone to the theaters this year so far. I watched about 20 movies in theaters last year, which isn't far off my average, but the list of movies I'm looking forward to this year is extremely short. Hopefully this is just a short-term consequence of the strikes. I used to watch to more prestige or 'oscar bait' movies in theaters, but I usually only watch those at home if I do at all these days. I've started watching theatrical re-releases of some classic movies, which I've never done before the last couple years.

It's not great. I go to the cinema roughly 3 times a week at present and there's rarely more than 15 people in a screening. Napoleon was the only time I saw more than half of the seats taken. Honestly, what can anyone do at this point? It feels almost like movies as a medium aren't valued by enough of the population to be sustainable. I guess the cost of living crisis is the big issue here, and some people fell out of the habit of going to the movies in 2020. When money is tight and even one visit for one person costs more than 2, maybe 3 streaming services, it's an understandable evaluation. If the only way the theatres stay open is to price everyone out, we're screwed.

2024 the beginning of the end of cinema? Streaming can't be uninvented so it's here to stay (regardless how profitable it is or isn't). Vinyl was replaced by compact disc replaced by digital downloads replaced by streaming. Streaming radio has replaced MW/FM radio waves radio. Streaming has started to replace network TV. And now in the 2020s post coronavirus streaming is clearly replacing cinema. Not only is streaming giving established movie goers and gen z youngsters less incentive to pay to see a movie at the theater, you have the second attack via Amazon and Apple. I think Apple and Amazon will give up on theatrical releases in 2025 or 26 and release tentpole movies direct to streaming. They may drop the budgets too but still be over 100 million. I can't see cinema surviving a three prong attack from Netflix and Apple and Amazon. Apple and Amazon are far far richer than the studios. My prediction is 80 percent of movies will go direct to streaming by 2030 and most streaming apps will be 40 to 50 percent funded from commercials (the ad tier package) and the rest of the money will be from subscriptions.
