I like this project, and the job you've done so far looks promising. I worked at one warehouse in which we had a large, automatic shelf lift, but it worked by sliding a whole shelf from its resting place onto the moving gantry, and it had a weight limit something like 500kg per shelf. I think for the positioning of the gantry you could use the kind of switches that are used as end stops, the gantry would need to have a part that sticks out and makes contact with the switches only if it's in the correct position to grab something from that compartment. That would work as long as you would stick to only using the same type of container in a given space on the shelf, as you would need to move the position of the switch if the box that it corresponds to was switched out for a different size one, but it simplifies greatly the problem of aligning the box grabber. Also, i think that making the gantry be able to grab a box from either side without the need to rotate itself, would give you a less problematic and faster system. You could have the little popping out hands on both ends of the extending arms, and just use the one needed for the side that it's grabbing the box from, unless there is a need for them to be oriented 90 degrees from how they're stored, but it's not mentioned in the video. All and all, it's an interesting project, and there are million ways to solve anything in this machine, so i can't wait for a next video on it :)

Hi and thank you for the input! Moving a whole shelf seems a little overkill for my needs , I can see the use case in big warehouses. For the positioning of the gantry, I have been around how to make switches horizontally and vertically work for me - but the installation time, precision and number of wires, lead me to the webcam. As for the rotating gantry to grab the box, as I answered James - the rotation stays for now. The moving of the arms to grab the box gave me a lot of issues - and double sided would make the trouble twice as big. Hope you hang around, and shout "Told you so!" when when I go to the double sides arms.

Aim to remove the rotation and have double sided arms, closer packed shelving and the racking can have a picking table on the end of the shelf. Could have two for pick multiple boxes

Hi and thank you for the input. The closer packed shelfs is not a problem (for now...) and as I will show in an upcoming video my design have progressed some further, for for now the turntable stays. But I hope you'll hang around and throw me the "I told you so" when I switch to the double sided arms.
