LOVE BOUVIERS! Excellent dogs! Completely enchanted with this breed! Steadfast and so incredibly intelligent- having owned many breeds and mutts in my life- my Bouves have been easy to train and are willing to engage in any activity.

I worked a bouvier as a patrol and narcotics dog in the 80s, always amazed at the athletic abilities of the dog, could do the attack work then take them in a group of kids, great dog

The breed is basically unknown in Australia. I went to Holland in the 80s and saw bouviers there. I looked into the breed history while overseas. I could not believe my luck when a found a breeder of them in Australia. A German who imported dogs from the UK. I bought the last pup he bred as he told me 'not popular and too expensive'. There are I think 3 breeders in Australia today. I named my pup Brugge for his Belgian heritage. All that is said in above video represents what bouviers are...strong, loyal, thinking dog and deeply devoted to human family. I feel so lucky for having had one of them. RIP Brugge. Never forgotten.

We had a Bouvier on our farm in Quebec. He was a wonderful dog. They make great security dog too. Our dog caught a thief on our farm. The thief thought it was a black bear.

I had a Bouvier/Lab mix. It had the height of a big lab and fairly straight hair but everything else was Bouvier. Put him with kids and you can feel safe that no one will touch them. He used to break up dog fights by running them over and knocking them flying. 150 pds at 1 1/2 years weighed on a trade scale at work. Lived to 16 1/2 years and I loved every minute of it.

Best breed ever! This is my second Bouvier , I named the first one Macho, he was Macho! I miss him with all my heart! ❤️now I have Kong, and he is just as great! They are allot of work to keep clean , but the best family dog ever and they are very gentle! They love little kids and old people and loyal to all family members! They make great search n rescue dogs. They grow fast so really enjoy the puppy days and take lots of pictures! They fart pretty bad and stinky! I love my our King he is 9 months old and he has a Bouvier puppy friend name Jack and he’s a great loving dog too!

My first Bouvier, Spenser, was the ultimate dog. With very little training, he had the equanimity to discern relative threats. We were walking him in a very public area when a downs syndrome young adult ran up and grabbed him around the neck. He just stood there placidly. This same dog, while sitting between my legs at my daughter's soccer game climbed over me because a stranger behind me tapped me on my shoulder. He did not bite, but the stranger got the message that I was not to be trifled with.

Although I've never had one, they impress me as a very intelligent animal. I use to work installing INVISIBLE FENCE. I ran across several during training. They were an extremely easy animal to work with. For their "Smarts" alone, they're worth adding one to your family. Hug one for me! Such a great dog.

Do you have experience with installing invisible fences for Bouviers? I’m very interested in using an invisible fence. Different breeds may not be good with invisible fences. Also, I live in a neighborhood that is fairly wooded with large lots. Do you have any experience with other animals coming into the invisible fence that may be a hazard to the pet? @@Greystoke1986 They are great animals. How large is your property? Do you have a pool? Children? Where do you live? All factors in installing à system that will work for you dog. I installed over 100 invisible fencing units in Central New Mexico with several Bouviers. They are an extremely intelligent breed, my gut feeling is you won't have any issues. Oh my goodness! You must have exciting days! I’m wanting to adopt a 4 month old female from a foster family. She is named Fiona. I may keep her name. It’s pretty and I never would have thought of it. My last dog was a female Yellow Labrador named Ranger. I know these breeds are probably polar opposites. Do you have any personal experience raising 3 females that I need to know? Or anything else the articles I’m reading may leave out? Thank you! 😊

Grooming is the key ! Our girl was a salt-n-pepper, uncropped giant who herded horses gently. Once she established herself, the herd accepted her leadership and they became her "babies". Our Farrier loved her and gave her hoof scraps ( yuck, but she loved them) for helping him. Best dog I ever had: Baloo lived about 9 years on Kentucky farmlands.

Quarta my Bouvier des Flandres she was the best Friend, best thing ever happens to me. She unfortunately died age 10 ( Cancer). I love her and missing her everyday more and more. My Quartunia 💘

I just got my 14th Bouvier. Always good to have two at once. Best pups ever!

@@SeraphinaoftheBayou almost all animals love family (if they’re friendly) & do better with a companion of their own species. Two males can fight (hence the “if friendly” condition). I’d never keep a bird because cages are mean, but if I did, then I’d have a pair. Same with fish - they require TEN gallons per INCH of each fish. Most people have tanks too small.

we had a one and when we would go to the park he would take the leash from people that were walking there dog and run with the dog holding the leash around the park. Such a beautiful dog.

Haleluja, first time I see a review of these nice looking dogs, I live in Flanders, but we see them rarely, in the 80s and 90s we saw them a lot more, same as with poodle dogs and GSDs are also rare, but not as the two others. Thanks for the vid.

Bouvier is also one of the only breeds that will use discretionary force. even untrained, a bouvier will only use as much force when attacking as it thinks it needs to disable or kill an attacker. when trained for police or military work they can be trained to swat, hip check, bite, pounce and many other increasingly deadly attacks that the bouvier will use at its own discretion while going after a suspect. Contrast that with other working dogs like german shepherds which will go full out 100% force every single bite every single time.

Bronson....the wonder dog was ours......every thing said true....herding kids cows horses with no training.....he seemed to feel that peddle bikes were unsafe......very aggressive toward wild animals...but not other dogs or people.....he could climb fences....hunt....all we did is make him come when called and sit.....and he soon got tired of the give me your paw thing....smarter than me.....he was

A fantastic breed! Very noble, imposing and serious. But this video gives good advice. The number one downside is the grooming. It does indeed take me a whole hour when the coat is full. It's exhausting. Apart from that, there are only positives. But I agree it is not a breed for a first time dog owner.

Do you recommend keeping a Bouvier trimmed? I have not had a dog that required a lot of grooming. Basically, a bath and a good brushing. Is it more helpful to keep a Bouvier’s beard and body trimmed short? I’m wanting to adopt a 4 month old female from a foster family. Thank you for any advice!

@@Greystoke1986 Sadly, my bouvier has passed on to the great kennel in the sky. A magnificent dog. Lived longer than normal - just shy of his 14th birthday. He knew he was loved. I kept him shaved in the summer (full body shave, but head kept as a bouvier cut), as he suffered in the heat (and it gave me a rest from the intensive grooming for a few months), but his coat grew fully in the winter, not least because he was outside during the day (he loved the cold). If you intend to keep her always indoors, then I suppose keeping her trimmed is OK. Of course you then lose a lot of what gives a Bouvier it's impressive and imposing presence. On the plus side, I imagine the grooming will be much easier. So your call. NB bouviers are double coated, so when the coat is full, it's never just a case of a 'good brush'. It's a two-stage process with the right tools. First a metal brush, which pulls the loose wool out of the inner coat. You end up with enough wool to knit a jumper! Then start all over again with a comb, to get the outer cut beautiful and knot-free. Then ears/eyes/nails etc. It's exhausting! I never bathed him. He went to a professional groomer every six weeks, and he was bathed then. Probably unwise to do it more than that, as it's not good for their skin. Hope this helps!

Just got my pup few months ago and her energy at 5 months is unfathomable. It confuses me that I'm not susposed to exercise her when it is she that exercises me!😂😂... Thankfully my daughter is a groomer and I a former hairstylist, so the grooming part is a breeze for us although pup may not be a fan of how often she is brushed....she'll adjust.

Mine will confront anyone coming near me (100 ft) in the yard aggressively. He didn't bite the pool guy though. My two learned commands instantly as though they had already been trained. They pick up some words readily. I'd say "rain" to my first one and she would shake her coat, even if indoors. I jokingly asked her where the cat was and she went to the glass door where the cat was waiting to come inside.

@@tuffybaxton6162 Mine, even as a puppy, likes to stand in the shade when it's hot out. I wouldn't otherwise say he has particular issues with heat. Also, I get his coat cut short for the Summer.

@@tuffybaxton6162 Keep the coat short during the hottest season and try a offering plastic wading pool to soak in, They love to swim !, Ours romped in the streams and lakes with our kids...

I used to groom my spaniel. It took a while but I was really good at it. Doesn't look like this breed has any special hair cut like cockers do, so it probably doesn't take an hour to groom unless you don't know what you're doing or you're taking your time.

I had a cocker spaniel before I had a bouvier. Any long coated dog needs grooming. It always takes time to groom your dogs. It is also a time for the dog to relax and be with you while you check for any issues. I think you are being ''unkind'' and besides that bouviers are much bigger than spaniels.

Any herding (sheep or cattle) dog breed has the tendency to “guard” & should be properly socialized with people & animals

My parents had one, the best guard and family dog we had. He never had a training, except good education but like all bouviers he was very wary of strangers. However he only attacked a guy who entered in my parents' property in the middle of the night, for the others he just stayed in front of the person (he did not barked) until the person retreated. As he was 2 feet 4 inches high and weighted about 100 pounds with the thick coat he was totally dissuasive. I've never heard of a bouvier attacking a member of his family or other pets like cats living with the family, they have excellent mental health and are not aggressive by nature. They are very strong willed and rather independent so they need education, nothing more. The advantage is in a situation alone the bouvier is able to think and act without need of orders, our bouvier made and organized himself his routine of watch tours.

originaly they were cattle herders, hence the thick coat and beard to let them appear bigger a young working dag breed bdf might be too harsh to herd sheep, if untrained

They also went into hiding the breed because Hitler went to go pet one and the dog snapped at him and he was furious so he ordered the Bouvier breed to be destroyed and the Belgian people hid their dogs

Not true Heather, it's one of the many urban myths that have evolved over the years .... Hitler was only a fan of "German things/Dogs" particularly the GSD ... of course Bouviers were shot by the German Army, but any invading army will often kill large guard breeds on farms that would alert people to their presence, or one that might be used to run messages and ammo to the troops in the field ... this myth has been researched at length by myself and others and there is absolutely no evidence to back this up .. my uncle was an early importer and breeder in the US after the war (1948) and knew all the great European breeders ... not one ever spoke of the "Hitlers Order myth" ... the breed is well known by many for its intelligence and skills in herding, guard work and military/police work and service ... and there's no need to exaggerate or puff up their history ... I grew up with the breed, some 6 decades now and trust me, I've heard all the myths and exaggerations out there ... part of appreciating any breed is being truthful about what they are, and are not ... hopefully this will clear up some of the untruths that get spread around
