Boundmotor Bound R3 electric skateboard with super soft wheels and customizable ESC

Bound R3 is a hub motor electric skateboard from Boundmotor. I thought I was done with hub motors, but I wanted to give those rubber wheels and that deck a try.

Thought I recognized some of the streets you were riding. I just ordered (arrives tomorrow) the Backfire G3 and have lived here (SH) for 5ish years. You should honestly reconsider the double kingpin trucks! The curve radius is ridiculously small on them, so you wouldn’t have to kick your board around like in the beginning of the video. And getting around standing cars in traffic becomes so easy. Seriously, double kingpin trucks are very underrated.

Hey Dan wanted to bring something up. I been scowering the internet and there are so many videos that state how to build an electric skateboard from scratch but usually they are half way finished, not super clear on how they got there etc. Would be a great video if you took 10-20 hours to document a 5 part series where you actually show you purchasing the pieces and building it piece by piece for your viewers to see and follow. Someone who isn't efficient with putting these things together I feel could help alot and be a top tier video for all who are looking to get into this hobby. Then you can sell the board when your done to a viewer. Idk, just a thought cause your great at explaining things. It also doesn't have to be a Trampa setup, more or less a basic dual motor, gear or belt setup with trucks, battery and a deck. Would be great if you ordered different pieces from different people as well so you can show people how to find the proper dimensions to make it all come together with every part cause I want to put something together with different parts but I get lost on would this piece work with that piece etc. Really stops me from buying anything . Could be very helpful

Cool video as always, you can't judge acceleration when you didn't mess with the settings. You can easily go 60 battery amps with these cells. set the motors amps to max, adjust positive ramping time to 0.1 (important, you can have insane power and with high ramping time it will feel like it has half) and then let's see. You don't need reverse switch and this solves the low speed brake problem, newer VESC fw has smart reverse, that way you come to a complete stop and then can set how fast it's supposed to start backing up, up to what max speed.

  • @tzdkb

Esk8 Spirit sadly this isn't like a normal vesc, it's been both hardware and software limited by alot of things so I'm not sure what he can and can't do within the settings (I'm pretty sure fw update is a no no though) Also I've got a lil bit of experience with those Tesla 21700 cells and they are only really useful up to 10-15a 20a if you're willing to sacrifice overall range due to the voltage drop when you use the throttle, so 20a in the vesc settings is about right (20*2).

Cruise mode can be used too. The only reason not to use newer fw is that it is all preset for FOC mode but If you skip the wizard and set it up for BLDC it will work. BLDC has not changed for years.

I have similar (Skullboard) 105mm rubber wheels and I have had no problem with wear. However on Skullboard wheels there can be issues with how true they spin. I would certainly put this board on the shopping list, 12s and Vesc is the way to go and I like large rubber wheels like these.

Time to write about VESC :D.... How do you like it compared to Hobbywing? - This battery is a bit unknown, there isn't any info about it, so modify the max battery limit at your own risk :p. - If you have a 12s2p, you can bump battery current max 6:30 to 30A, if you have the 12s3p version you could bump it to 45A. This should make it a lot more powerful. - For better acceleration/braking, you will need to mess around with the throttle curve. - For reverse braking, there is a feature called "smart reverse" which is quite nice. Its function is like Exway's freemode but it won't go backwards until you fully brake. Then if you fully brake at a stop, it will only go back at around a 10% speed, which is nice to stay on your board if you ever need to stop on a hill.

The throttle curve is only going to adjust the mapping between throttle actuation and acceleration. It won't actually affect max acceleration at all (though time ramping parameters could adjust its time derivative). You'll have to tweak the motor current limits for more acceleration, which obviously could lead to thermal issues.

OK , board... 😶😶 ( MUST READ !! ) I would not recommend this board for some very strong reasons , most people don't notice that much. 1) Even though it uses a vesc , it is configured at 20A battery MAX !! ( Which is even less than a wowgo 2s ) If you can configure it , it's still dangerous because you might end up Burning your motors. 2) Deck is WAYY to dropped 3) The wheels are not made of PU ( Polyurethane ) , Instead they are made of some cheap rubber which doesn't lasts long. 2) Trucks are really generic & Old models. 3) It's just not worth it - Pointless use of Vesc , Cheap trucks & wheels , Less range ( even with a large battery ) for 900$s !! 4) you have to bend down to turn it on ! ( THATS DISGUSTING & Daniel forgot that 🤣🤣 ) I would rather build a MUCH better DIY at this price !! But anyways Awesome vid Daniel ! Good luck to all Esk8rs !! P E. A. C. E. ! ! !

You CAN get high amp draw 21700 cells...but there max Mah is about 4000mah.....everything above this Mah (no cell known than more than 5000mah btw) has a max of 10Amp if not even lower.

And another thing: Everyone who is stating that he is using the so called „panasonic Tesla“ cells.....is probably lying. These cells are NOT available on free market and more or less a rumour. Mostly all chinese skateboard/Euc/selfbalancing board producers that promote they use the „panasonic tesla“ cells, are using chinese fake cells with 4800/5000mah and a unknown Amp draw (as not more than 7,5/10Amp is possible at this chemistry, its probably about that)

  • 4 жыл бұрын

@@ullle66 They are trying to hijack Tesla's "battery day" marketing. Tesla is indeed using Panasonic NCR's, but they aren't special; it's a low current rated, high capacity cell, and the application calls for a shitload of them, so high capacity is a no brainer. However, Tesla IS getting into the battery manufacturing scene, with a bunch of cool shit to say about why they would be relevant, graphene, yada yada, getting some of those cells would be very significant; the battery materials will go onto the factory campus, and finished Tesla vehicles will be shipped out, so no cool Tesla cells for you and I, unless somebody gets a factory worker to bring some out, if possible, or just pulling cells from wrecked Teslas in a few years, which might get you a sweet vape but screw getting a sick pack out of them xD

"Not a fan of double kingpin trucks." What happened to "I actually really like double kingpin trucks." ???

  • @DanielKwan

    @DanielKwan

    4 жыл бұрын

Yeah... I should explain. The first 4 boards I tried with DKP trucks all used large all terrain wheels. They didn’t all feel the same, but they were all kind of not as fun to control as boards with RKP trucks. Then Ownboard released the GT kit with 120mm wheels. DKP with 120mm wheels felt significantly better to me than DKP with 150mm AT wheels. It was eye opening to me at the time. Relative to DKP with AT wheels, I really liked DKP with smaller wheels. BUT I like DKP like I like my Carver board (surfskate). They’re fun for that low and medium speed really tight carves. I don’t want to use it everyday. If I only use one board, sure I’ll make it work and I’ll get used to it and enjoy it. But since I have multiple boards, I definitely prefer RKP trucks for everyday use. I like to use my Carver surfskate for a surfskate session, and I like to use the Ownboard GT for that surfy type of skating as well. But when I see yet another board using DKP trucks, to me it’s kind of like seeing them put on Carver trucks on a board for everyday use. Sorry don’t know if that makes sense. I may need to clarify in a future video. Anyway, it’s not so much that I hate DKP or I’m not a fan of them. I’d just rather not use them on boards that go 40+ km/h. With RKP I keep the trucks nice and loose, and tighten up the rear in like less than a minute only when I’m gonna go fast. Then afterward I loosen it up again. With DKP it’s not that easy.

@@DanielKwan Gotcha, that's a decent explanation. It sounds like there's a tradeoff between the deep + tight carves of DKP vs. the stability of RKP. For you, the DKP is fun for taking out every now and then, but you prefer having a more stable RKP (which can still be quite carvy) for your everyday board because then you can go faster while still feeling safe. Like, I really enjoy the DKP on my Ranger X2 and I ride them really loose, but I rarely ride above 18mph and the board essentially maxes out at 20mph with my weight, so I don't have to worry about getting wobbles going too fast. In that sense, if I was to get another board I'd want one with wide + stable RKP to go faster without feeling sketchy, so I get where you're coming from. That all being said, I'm not 100% convinced that DKP can't both feel stable and have good carveablility at the same time (if you get the bushing setup dialed in just right), but it's easier to achieve with RKP with a lot less hassle.

Greg Holland I have a set of Riptide bushings waiting to be installed on one of my DKP boards. Just haven’t gotten around to it. Hoping they’ll have me become inconsistent again and love DKP hahaha

@@DanielKwan Hell yeah good to hear. Check out post #18 in the below link. It's written by the owner of Riptide Bushings regarding his ideal bushing setup on the Backfire Ranger. I copied that setup for my own board and can confirm that it's quite good. electric-skateboard.builders/t/ranger-x1-backfires-first-all-terrain-electric-skateboard/65300/17

I so appreciate your reviews, and was really hoping you'd do Boundmotor. It's my top choice (on specs) I am really interested in why you did not do the direct drive, what is your adversion to direct drive anyways? Just curious.

Like I said in the video they only have DD with DKP trucks, which I’m not a big fan of. I have two DD boards waiting to be covered tho (and one of them uses DKP but oh well).

steelavocado Just really cheap generic pads but similar to Pro-Tec. Left glove is a cheap downhill slide glove. Right glove is a modified “drone” glove, link in description.

Daniel - I love your reviews but with all due respect, you're not riding this board the way it's supposed to. This is a carver more akin to snowboarding and you're riding it like a city board.
