I read that Marshawn Lynch decided to play Mr G in this film so that he could atone for reacting negatively upon learning that his sister was gay when they were teenagers. Though they've since patched things up, with him giving her away at her wedding, his sister thought that appearing in this movie was a great idea.

I worked on Bottoms as one of the football players. All the cast and crew worked really hard for a month and a half day and night;and I’d like to speak on half of everyone involved and say ‘thank you all for seeing the film and we are so glad you guys enjoy it. This was one of my first extended projects working as an aspiring actor and I got to meet some of the best laughs and meet some of the most amazing people. It’s crazy because while filming I was hoping a KZread channel would like it and I can maybe see myself in an in depth movie analysis; low and behold Karsten Runquist himself is talking about it while I’m eating late night pizza rolls. Keep up the great content brother!

I mentioned it on my letterboxd, but I really loved how Bottoms' brand of surreal and absurd helps to build the high school environment as its own microcosm very akin to how teenagers feel like high school is their entire universe. It's really great

This 100000%. As I was watching I noticed how surrealist the posters and banners around the school are. They’re super over the top, especially related to the football team. It made me feel like I was receiving the messaging in the same way many of the students were probably internalizing it, as opposed to what was actually displayed.

I love this film, this is my first time watching a work of Emma Seligman. One thing I loved about this film, is how excellent it portrayed Gen Z humor, being able to do raunchy vulgar jokes without degrading teens. The way the two leads delivered their jokes is exactly how most young adults joke around. It is upsetting that there is such limited screenings though.

I knew this film was going to be hilarious but did not expect it to be as healing and cathartic as it was. It was bizarre and insane and inane, but also extremely emotional. The way it joked about SA and DV and everyday sexism and heteronormativity was so good - I kept thinking about my own high school’s “Jeff” and how it was an open secret that he assaulted people. I loved how surreal their world was and all the Easter eggs. Josie studying from a textbook labelled “AP Math for Women,” the fair giving away blowup dolls as prizes, the Creation of Jeff painting, the But I’m A Cheerleader shoutout ❤ and the mascot’s giant dick. I’m also pretty sure there was a picture of Girl Defined at Hazel’s get-better party. I also have never been more attracted to anyone in a film as Ayo Edebiri in this role. Edit: AND PUNKIE JOHNSON KILLED IT.

I don’t usually literally laugh out loud in movie theaters, but I was CACKLING in Bottoms! It’s literally the best teen comedy I’ve seen in like a decade. I think a major reason it’s so successful is not only the cinematic care taken with its visuals, but the characters are honestly such shitty people. And that makes them so relatable and so much like the classic characters from movies like Superbad. Like they’re annoying, and lame, and straight up bad friends. It’s hilarious and real. And it’s refreshing to see queer characters just be so flawed and awful! It’s getting to see these kinds of characters step out of the usual Hollywood archetypes that’s so nice

I’m usually not a fan of comedies but Bottoms knocked it out of the park. Having a young queer writer made all the difference. The humor felt current to REAL young people, the characters were relatable, and it didn’t water down its queerness to be more digestible for straight audiences. Also had an incredibly soundtrack. My entire theatre was full of queer folks clapping for every kiss and every fight scene :~)

I think Bottoms has more in common with heightened reality cult classic teen movies like Better Off Dead and Three O'Clock High over Superbad. The world they created was so bonkers and I didn't know what to expect. The fact that the film ends the way it does shows that Seligman really didn't care whether or not it made sense in a logical way, but she still stuck something that was emotionally resonant. It reminded me so much, tonally, of John Cusack racing down the mountain on one ski being chased by an evil paperboy. In spite of all the insanity, you still wanna see our heroes win and I think that's really remarkable given how comedies have become so sterile in modern cinema.

It’s amazing how I never knew about these 2 (Ayo and Rachel)…but after this movie I became a super fan. Ayo I had an idea of who she was cause of Ninja Turtles, Abbott Elementary and Across the Spider-Verse…but once I saw this I immediately started The Bear. She’s going places 🙌🏽 On the flip side, still need to check out more of Rachel’s work…but her and Ayo have some hilarious skits on Comedy Central.

i think my favorite thing about it is the fact that its in this weird unhinged fantasy that the cast semi-acknowledges the entire time. from the fact that the first class is literally like 5 minutes to the end where there is just an unexplained sword on the football field that a player impales himself on.

While I do like Booksmart, I think you articulated some words that I've been looking for: That film, while clever at times, feels very much like it's *trying* to be the next Superbad. Bottoms wants to be the first Bottoms, and that's why I think it will have a much higher comedic icon status in the long run. The thing with classics is that the classics we know and love didn't become so beloved by trying to imitate form, they became classics because of their own originality. Bottoms very much aligns better with the status as an instant classic for this reason.

One of my favs of the year so far clearly from a filmmaking standpoint never had a bigger smile on my face watching these actresses and director work together. It’s funny there are some films like “grown ups” or any other shitty happy Madison film where NO EFFORT or very little is put into it but everyone’s like “yeah come on tho they had fun making it everyone was with their buddies” like yeah but if end product is shit what’s the point? With “bottoms” I felt like it was the total opposite where the joy from me at least was watching these girls (who are like a few years older than me) releasing a movie that’s in mainstream movie theaters seeing their vision come to life whether or not you thought it was perfect you have to admire at least that. Also one of the rare current comedy films that totally Deserve to have a blooper reel at the end, where I feel like again any other shitty comedy film id be like REALLY?!? But here I’m like being on the bloopers

It definitely feels like an amateur film. There’s a lot of awkward pauses, “um”s and “like”s, and you can definitely tell when they go from improved to written dialogue because the delivery becomes a lot less natural. It definitely doesn’t make the movie bad by any means, if anything it makes it more endearing, and since it’s a teen comedy, it actually works.
