I don't think Bottas deserved a penalty because of the precedents, and because he clearly didn't gain an unfair advantage (unlike he previous jump start). Either way, great video. As a life-long F1 fan, and at the risk of coming across as condescending, it's really good to see someone from across the pond who loves F1 as much as you do. It's no secret that F1 is, and has always been, more of a European thing. I'd be interested to watch a video where you explain how you got into F1. What you love about it and what you don't care for too much (let's be honest, we all have or criticisms of the sport). It's kind of hard to explain to people what it's like for us Europeans/Brits who grew up hearing their parents discuss/reminisce drivers like Jackie Stewart and how tragic the death of Cevert was. The week after Ayrton Senna and Ronald Ratzenberger died, these crashes were extensively discussed at school, during classes. Keep in mind that I'm from the same generation as Hamilton and Vettel. That's how big F1 was for me growing up. I probably didn't even know that something called NASCAR existed. Your analysis of why there are fewer American drivers kind of points at the difference in racing traditions/cultures already, which definitely is part of the reason why F1, by and large, isn't as popular in the US. However, I'd really be keen to get a more in depth perspective, your analysis based on what kind of feedback you get talking to people in the US, what you think F1, and perhaps European series in general, could learn from NASCAR and vice-versa. Why is it that NASCAR just doesn't work outside the US? When Juan Pablo Montoya, and Jaques Villeneuve made the swtich from F1 to NASCAR, I found out there's a bit more to NASCAR than a bunch of hicks driving around an oval (I was surprised to learn that not all tracks were ovals in fact). It would appear that both sports have an image problem, and are doing a rather poor job at converting "the other side". Is it that fans of NASCAR don't understand that F1 is really a constructors championship, with a driver title as a secondary thing? Is it because NASCAR's apparent lack of technology, and its rough and ready racing style just comes across as gladiatorial and imprecise (F1 crash contact is very likely to compromise your own car, vs "trading paint" in NASCAR)? Is it because F1, to me at least, seems to prioritise driver safety a lot more than NASCAR does (despite the fact that F1 races in the wet, and NASCAR doesn't)? TL;DR: Interested to get your thoughts on any or all of the above

This is going to come back and bite the FIA on the bum. There will be more and more jump starts within the tolerance until they actually have to change the rules. This is just rediculous. Other sports don't need a tolerance, why does F1.

@@grannieannie1371 other sports do have a tolerance, though. The WRC rules state that "the jump start photocell should be 40cm after the start line". Btw what Bottas is doing with his left hand is releasing the clutch, pressing it again after the jump start and re-releasing it again after lights out. There is a button and a dial on the steering wheel to adjust the clutch but it's actual operation is done in 2 stages using paddles behind the steering wheel. To launch most drivers pull the left paddle right to to the wheel and the right one about halfway.

5:01 Actually if you look very very closely to the bottom of the screen of the steering wheel, there is a white square that appears. We barely see on your video, but if you look on the official onboard on F1 youtube channel, we do see it. The reflection doesnt help, but we do see a square pop up. I think that the three light shows the optimal rev. We can see those three light fade away lightly. It takes a good second to go completely off, so I don't believe he was talking about those lights. My position is, Valtteri was deviating of the optimal rev, so much that the three light fade away, and a sensor in the car showed a white square ont he bottom of the steering wheel telling him he wasnt anymore, and he reacted to that instead. We can see a split second between Bottas reaction and that white square, being a more convinient reaction time for a f1 driver.

@@CYMotorsport Watched the video again, and you missed what he's talking about. A white bar appears on his screen, at 5:02/5:03. Clearly the shift lights are going to be related to the clutch that he's holding with his left hand. The random white bar flashing on his screen is almost certainly the light in question, as Alexander was saying, and it precludes the car launching (at least by ear).

To extrapolate further, because I was pondering it again and wanted to triple check that we were not accusing you of not stating something that you had, I believe you are referring in the video to where the grey stitching/pad on his glove becomes visible. That is NOT what Alexander and I are referring to, and as it DOES appear as though there is a visual change on what's being displayed on his wheel (other than the shift lights that Bottas would have been expecting anyway), the video comes off as overly harsh on the guy, especially since all involved were satisfied with the official response and explanation.

Like they race each other for years & know a lot about each others tricks/styles etc but you never hear it e.g. Even from Nico Rosbergs videos he's very defensive on details, like the Dannny Ric podcast where they cut out a huge section on setups. Deffo think Vettell is on to something, he even highlighted the jump start last week. Great vid btw clearly lots of effort put in, love your stuff!

Vettel should know: he got away with a jump-start in the Japanese GP himself. But what's getting more and more obvious is that the FIA more often plays fast and loose with the rules: they are tolerant when it suits them and very strict when THAT suits them. It also matters to the FIA which driver from which team is involved.

@@elliottgould5114 That's not true at all. If that was the case, every start from every driver would be exactly the same given they kept the engine at its ideal revs, and that's not what we see in races. In fact there are rules that disallow teams to artificially modulate the clutch to cover up driver errors. The clutch response must be within a very small time frame from driver operation of the clutch pad cause if they could, the teams would release the clutch at a very specific rate via software to get the best start possible.

Well, here's fhe thing. Jump starts of course happen. Most of the time the drivers actually react, stop and sacrifice their start consequencially. That is a pretty bad punishment in of itself. So that tollerance is actually a real blessing, because we have an area for once, that is actually not over regulated at the green table.

The first one Bottas did a few years ago, they said it was fine to move before lights went out because of two reasons: The lights don't actually signal the start of the race, they signal that the race started about 0.003 of a second ago, the other reason was he didn't trigger the sensor. I don't remember who said it, maybe Whiting, they have no problem with drivers trying to anticipate the lights.

They have two clutches just below the paddle shifters. The one on the right is pressed fully and the one on the left is pressed at around 50%. The one on the left is released first, followed by one on the right for the next gear. I really thought the engine would have been stalled, but it didn't happen. It should have been considered a jump start but, yeah! he lost some 5 positions at turn 1 and also the tolerance transponder didn't light up as mentioned by FIA. For Sebastian's case in Japan'19, he did loose only a single position at turn 1. I guess it seems to work out if we take the positions lost into consideration.

First of all: Great video once again! I like your deeper looks into to just technicalities but also into the teams and drivers themselves. Now on to the actual comment :) From what I’ve heard, is that tolerance is to allow drivers to find the biting point of the clutch, (which might cause very minor movement) and nobody nows what this tolerance is. Not even the teams. This is to stop teams from using this tolerance to their advantage. Personally I don’t see a bit problem with the system currently in place. In 2017 Valtteri technically didn’t jump the start, because he moved after lights out. (We all know he just guessed the moment, but that doesn’t matter.) And in both 2019 and this time around Seb and Valtteri royally screwed over their own stats because they had to stop and then go again. So they didn’t get anything out of it. If they hadn’t stopped again, 10 second stop-go penalty all day long. (Like Kimi last year(?)). But like Matty (WTF1) said in his video, if absolutely no movement was allowed before the start, haft the grid would end up with penalties before turn 1.

  • @CYMotorsport

    @CYMotorsport

    3 жыл бұрын

That’s the slippery slope. I’d have to check the footage I have no evidence Of half the grid moving but I certainly don’t doubt Stuart. But I’m okay with half the grid getting penalties. It’s precisely joe track and field evolved into what it is now which is peak precision . As a former division one runner who was disqualified from a 100 meter conference championship dash haha I can say I respect the firm policy on no movement

If I remember correctly, it was said by finnish experts Ossi Oikarinen (former f1 engineer for toyota, ferrari and a few others) and possibly Mika Salo (is drivers steward sometimes) that the tolerance was there because the cars vibrate so much they can trigger the sensor when they are waiting for the lights to go out. Don't know if that is the case but apparently it was during the v10 era when they were still active in f1.

Im actually 99% positive what hes holding onto is the clutch. F1 clutches tend to be located as a paddle near the gear shifts. The fact that the car moving coinciding with him releasing pressure of what ever he is pushing down kind of backs this up further... Same with the lights fading...because hes released the clutch the rev lights drop because the clutch is now engaged with the wheels and his revs, which are usually held to around 11-12000 rpm for a start, are now much lower as the power is being pushed to the rear wheels

There is no human judgement. If your superior eyes are used I’d like to see you justify each decision on when it’s a jump start and when it’s too close too call. Plus you’d spend the first 5 minutes as a steward watching replays of every car on the grid at lights out. Frankly, if the jump start is enough to give the driver an advantage, it will be picked up by the sensors and the transponder. If it’s minimal and actually loses the driver time and positions, then why have a penalty if it’s so small that it’s within the tolerance?

Good work Nick dude, I never bought Valtteri's "I don't know what happened" spiel but I didn't know what it could be. But, I didn't think that the mighty Mercedes, spending 400 gatrilion million dollars a year would have unknown lights blinking on and off in the cockpit. They know exactly what 'every' molecule of that car is and does. Maybe they will give a 'silent' warning on the back channels because you are right, it does set a bad precedent.

What Valterri said is possible, you would have to use your startle reflex if you want to react fast, pro e-sport player can get their reaction time down to the 0.1s. But that could make you react to something you’re not expecting to happen which I believe is the case here.

going to be honest. I didnt get anything of what you were trying to say. None of it made sense to me and i suspect a lot of other people as well but no one want to look like an idiot by saying so. But from experience i can say this. Valtris explanation is a perfectly valid one. I have seen it countless times at stop lights. The light is overly long and you waiting. Any slight movement and people react. I have done it. Now take a hyper aware driver , looking to get the jump on everyone else who is looking to get that advantage down to that first turn and ANY small thing at that point will get a reaction. And yeah , nothing wrong with trying to jump the start. As a former athlete the one thin that used to bug me was getting that perfect start only to have the moron starter call me for "jump starting" especially when video clearly shows that the gun went off BEFORE i moved. I hate this shit because my reaction time is so fast that it became a consistent problem.

I’m not sure what athlete or sport you were in but as a collegiate sprinter this is precisely opposite to the rules. Valtteri as proven was at best Ill informed. I wouldn’t assume for everyone but you’re perfectly within your rights to speculate and criticize. I’ve heard you and it doesn’t jive with feedback but I’ll certainly keep an eye on it. I won’t try to re explain bc if it didn’t make sense it’s not going to and I respect that. We just disagree on this one. I’m glad I affirmed your POV that’s good atleast

@@CYMotorsport what i am saying is that i hated the rule because i felt penalized for being quicker off the mark than everyone else. And no, i am not saying you are wrong. I am saying i really have no idea what you are saying because i dont see it. In any case my understanding of F1 jump start rule is that there is essentially a box that you must be stationary in at the start of the race and if at the start you have moved forward or are moving outside or inside of that box then you have jumped the start. Consequently even if you moved before the start but remained inside that box AND are stationary at go time then you have NOT jumped the start. I think that may be what you were more or less saying?

I don't have any problem regarding Valtteri not receiving penalty. My problem is because FIA assumed that he's fine without any investigation. However, I might be wrong, where the FIA might be reacting to warning sign after the limits rather than human's eye.

I hear what you mean. I wish I could re frame it to people if they think he violated the regulation. Bc I have noticed people keep saying he doesn’t deserve a penalty not realizing that’s subjective . That’s everything a rule shouldn’t be. I don’t want him penalized I want the FIA to remove themselves from making subjective calls about drivers.

As far as I know, to be considered a jump start, he is supposed to be out of his box (marked by the yellow line) when the lights go out. He wasn't. Vettel was in the video you showed, for example. I could be wrong, but I believe that to be the case. No need for transponders or anything, even, they can see that from the onboard cameras.

Regulations specifically cite movement. I time stamped the rules bc I know the regs are boring as shit haha but I’m notoriously in favor of strict interpretation of them on this channel for better or worse

@@CYMotorsport That's totally fine, dude! And your prerogative. I just don't think it sets any sort of bad precedent, and clearly, neither do other teams or drivers (only Vettel, but I think he's miffed because of his own record of jumping the starts). So, if it's OK with them, driving with Valtteri, it's OK with me, to be honest. Just like you said, it's about context. And in this context, Valtteri got f*d by his mistake. And the 10 second penalty would have probably not affected the result. I think the stewards take that kinda stuff into consideration. Perhaps I'm wrong, though.
