Botswana Threatens to Send 20,000 Elephants to Germany | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Botswana Threatens to Send 20,000 Elephants to Germany | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The nation of Botswana in Southern Africa is an elephant conservation success story. The country is home to one-third of the world's elephants. Over 130,000 elephants roam Botswana, where they are protected from poachers and other threats. But to sustain its conservation efforts, Botswana resorts to allowing elephant hunts. Botswana says the money from trophy hunts goes into conservation efforts. But Europe seems to be uncomfortable with this. Germany plans to make it more difficult for its citizens to import hunting trophies. In response to Germany's unilateral move, the President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi has threatened to send them a "gift" of 20,000 elephants.

I am THRILLED to see this headline because that means over 20,000 elephants STILL EXIST ON THIS PLANET. And in the description, I see that OVER 130,000 EXIST IN BOTSWANA ALONE. I was under the impression that the population of elephants was FAR LESS than that. This gives me hope.

I live next to the Kruger National Park fence. Totally overpopulated with elephants. They cause havoc. We have one big Marula tree still standing. A few others like leadwood are gone. They push the trees over just because they can. Also because of interference by non African countries that have no clue about conservation. Numbers must be controlled for their own sake and everybody else. They will run out of food and water.

I am a citizen of Botswana and my president is right. We are tired of European lectures. When they developed their countries they didn't consider animal habitats. Their drive was to civilize themselves and dominate the world. When it comes to Africa they want us consider animal rights over human rights. Not to mention the havoc on crops. Just one elephant eats more than 149kgs per day. When a herd passes through your farm, that's the end of your agricultural career. And that happens even in my country Zambia. The West will never understand because they think Africa is one huge jungle meant for animals with humans encroaching on the animals land. And they think elephants have a lifetime supply of green food growing in abundance. The reality is that elephants are destructive, they uproot trees that took years to grow, leaving the terrain bare. Deforestation and desertification follow, and they move on to people's farms. The West would rather see elephants thrive than humans. A sad reality.

Here in the USA, various states have specific hunting seasons for animals such as moose, elks, wolves, bears, wild boars, deers, alligators etc. States such as Florida, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Wyoming etc generate funds from hunting license fees and keep the animal population in check. The reason why our elephant population is out of control is because they migrate in large numbers from neighbouring countries where poaching is rife, to Botswana where 38% of the land is dedicated to wildlife conservation and therefore safer for animals. We are now having instances where elephants are found thousands of kilometers away from the areas where they were historically found. They are quickly outnumbering the area, which they have to share with orher species, and now moving towards areas occupied by humans, which are also limited as 80% of Botswana is covered by the Kgalagadi desert. We are doing our best, and if we could find a country to safely relocate excess numbers to, that would be an easy option.

I do not know why we are framing 20 000 elephants being send to Germany as a bad thing. Europe has very few elephants as it is, it can do with 20 000 more elephants, plenty of zoos there charging a considerable amount for people to see a single elephant or 2. Everyone can actually benefit for this. The elephants get taken care of, the Botswana herds stay within environmentally friendly numbers and Europeans do not have to travel thousands of miles just to see elephants. Seems like diplomacy is the only thing lacking here, from both Europeans and Botswana.

Elephants have the right to live. Maybe the world should provide funds to Bostwana to more respectfully handle elephants and avoid preventative cullings. For example there should be areas where elephants get banned from going and special patrols should be made with proper vehicles that can inhibit and turn back elephants.

I don't really get why they are so upset about this. Presumably these rules only apply to "Trophies" being taken back to Germany... How many German elephant hunters can there be? Why is Botswana acting like it's an attack on them and their right to deal with elephants encroaching on human territory? I'd call their bluff and thank them for the elephants... sounds like a pretty big logistical challenge to follow through on this gift :)

Uhm. Picking a Fight ? Threatening ???? Germany has not even Responded to this yet. Which is not Surprising. 1. Germany is CONSIDERING to "Limit" not "Ban" Hunting Trophy Imports. This Generally means Germany is considering to put Regulations on the Import of Hunting Trophies like this. Which ensure that Hunting Trophies can only be Imported in a Sustainable Fashin and only from Countries which properly Manage their Wildlife Reserves. In all Likelihood. Botswana which has a Proven Track Record of Properly Managing its Wildlife Reserves and has a Growing Population of Elephants. Only allowing Hunting to Control the Elephant Population. Would never be Affected by this Law in the First Place. 2. Botswana likely does not have the Ressources to Send 20.000 Elephants anywhere to be Honest. 3. If Germany were to Ban Imports of Hunting Trophies. What Stops Germany from Banning Imports of Elephants and simply not allowing any Transports of Elephants to Enter the Country ? Whats Botswana gonna do ? Use its Navy to Stage an Invasion of Germany and Forcibly Unload the Elephants in Germany Ports after Capturing them ??? lol So Yeah.... Nice Story for Cheese Paper News. But really not more than that.
