    Huzzah! I did my last attempt with my M1 yesterday. Tried out a winter trigger, it’s better than freezing your finger off if you had to fight at -20° but I took it off the rifle quickly afterwards. 3 minutes low and I had to manually reset the trigger after every shot. Second attempt was ten hits, I haven’t reviewed the video for the time yet. Had a great AR run in -11°F a month ago.

    Haven't tried it yet, but I always thought the winter trigger was an Negligent Discharge waiting to happen. Maybe not so much on the range, but a company of grunts with them, in sub-zero weather freezing their butts off, and the bang-button is right where you normally grab the grip, and I assume they kept the safety permanently off when they used the winter trigger, otherwise it would be a huge pain to switch on and off. I also figured it would make your trigger squeeze better, since it's mechanically straight back, no chance to push or pull left or right on the trigger. Anyway I think it's awesome that you used it in the match!

    In the usa we have CMP rimfire sporter that is a different take on this. 7.5lb or less 22lr, 6x or less scopes, 3lb or more triggers (ie standard 22lr rifles not olympic/fancy guns). YOu are permitted one standard M1 type sling (loop sling, not in standing), one regular glove, and a shooting matt (no fancy gloves or jackets. 60 shots for record on a target with a ~1.5" 10-ring (600 max score). 10 shots slowfire and 10 shots rapid (5 at a time in 25 seconds from standing, +5 for bolt guns) from each of 3 positions (prone, sitting/kneeling, standing). Targets at 50 yards except standing = 25 yards. A great marksmanship practice game wihout alot of equipment or expense. Basically any off the shelf 22lr and not-crap-grade ammo can score perfect as the 10 ring is 3MOA. But a perfect score has only been obtained once.

    Mag reloads were flawless and economy of motion was fluid. Rifle ran well and you managed the distractions around you. I have always seen marksmanship as a Zen state that allows the individual to partition themselves from the immediate world. Its a mental test. Now... Back to work for me...

    We shoot a similar event in the States called an Appleseed Shoot. It’s a timed 4 position event on reduced size targets at 25m typically done with 22lr rifles. Score certain amount of points and you get a well earned patch. During the breaks and at lunchtime ROs tell totally unbiased stories how we defeated the British in the Revolutionary War.

    Looking at how far you're having to place your head/eye in relation to the scope's eyepiece. one would think that this 1x3 scope is an "Extended-Eye relief" model intended for scout rifle mounting forward on the barrel, or pistol use. the other issue I see is the rings/mounts are too tall causing you to crane/lift your head into an unnatural position from the stock's cheek rest area. Nope, nope, nope good sir, Leupold's scopes are far from rubbish.

  • @BlokeontheRange

    @BlokeontheRange

    Жыл бұрын

    It's definitely not an scout scope, and rather pre-dates that sort of thing on the commercial market. If the rings were any lower I'd have to crush my face down into the butt. This is probably a 1980's Leupold, and the reasonably-priced optics of that era were utter tonk compared to today.

    by the by. I rummaged through my wares and came across set of Leupold Detach-O rings with bases in its original packet from the late 1960's. These were to be mounted onto a Winchester 1894 Carbines barrel using the rear sight dove tail lot and barrel band as mounting points. The intended scope, an extended eye relief was a 2x, or 3x Leupold scope. quite a bit before Jeff Cooper popularized the Scout rifle concept.

    It fit the small-bore carbine competition rules. Just. But wasn't in the "spirit" of them (there were a bunch of boomer prejudices baked into the rules, but they couldn't think of everything). In the meantime they've changed the rules to ban anything with a free-standing pistol grip so it wouldn't be allowed now.
