BOSS IR-2 Demo & Review: My Thoughts

The BOSS IR-2 is basically a guitar pedal that's filled with a bunch of other amplifiers and cabinets. It's a guitar amp/cab pedal and it also acts as an audio interface which is pretty dope.
However, I personally wasn't a big fan of it, and I'll explain why in this video and also go through a quick demo.

    I just had a look and saw that this video got more views than expected so far - although in a negative way. After having a look at some of the comments here, I realize I made a mistake in thinking that the IR-2 was a standard guitar pedal like the other 30+ pedals that I own. I saw the section in the manual on how it can be used for mixers, mobile devices, laptops etc. My mistake was assuming it could also be used with a guitar amp in the usual manner I'm accustomed to. That said, I won't be taking the video down as some have stated because this was my legit experience of using it. I imagine I won't be the only one who makes the same mistake, so maybe other people will learn something from it.

    Thanks for the video, I actually had the same question: can it be used through an amp? How does it sound with your amp if you switch off the cab simulation?

    I haven’t tested the way it sounds yet without cab simulation. Frankly, I probably won’t. I like my current setup more than this pedal, but like I said in the video, this pedal wasn’t made for home recording people like me. @@matevigh8418

    Why is it not made for home recording? It's basically an amp + cab AND an audio interface! Sounds like an ideal setup for home recording to me.

    You’re using it completely wrong. You had the amp+ cab sim going into the amp, which isn’t what it’s made for. If you’re gonna plug into an amp you have to turn the cab sim off. That’s why it sounded kinda bad.

    Even then it's wrong. What you do when you turn cab SIM off is plug it into the fx return. And you'll see a marked change. Guitar to pedal ...pedal to fx return.... Done.

    Make sure you turn off the IRs if you’re running it to the input of a guitar amp, or through in the loop of a guitar amp. You are emulating a speaker through a speaker is why it’s harsh.

    @@ReedHarrisonif you turn off the cabinet simulator, yes. Otherwise, you’re plugging a cabinet into a cabinet. Although one might want to do that for an effect, that’s not how it’s supposed to be used. If you use the cab sim, then it should run into a full-frequency speaker setup. You don’t put a Celestion IR into a real Celestion speaker.

    After 2 months of it STILL being out of stock, I just cancelled the order for a Boss IR-2, got a cheapo NuX Pulse NSS4 and loaded it with some York Audio IR files. I just wanted a good IR headphone pedal to be able to rock out in a hotel room due to my job. Putting a TS808 in front of it seems to do the trick. Gotta thank Boss for really messing up production numbers on this one because I just saved myself $100... haven't tried out the NSS4 into a real amp yet because that wasn't the reason I got it. Might sand down and refinish the pedal with a flamingo graphic since it's pink 🤷‍♂️

  • @jimmyjames2022
    @jimmyjames20225 ай бұрын

    Yah it's worth leaving this up as instructive. As mentioned the BOSS "IR Loader" software can turn off the cab sims which is handy for running through an amp that doesn't have an 'power amp in', but also can turn off the amps and leave the cab sims on and change other settings like the reverb (room, hall or plate) and load new IRs from software. Through a desktop AI this is like a better Katana 50 preamp since it has the fx loop and is a pedal! Looking forward if I ever get mine back in stock as sold out everywhere.

    It’s sounds harsh because youre not only running a preamp pedal into your amps preamp, but your running an IR into your amps speaker. Here’s what you do: if you’re going to use your amp, turn OFF the pedal IR and run the pedal into your FX return. The IRs will sound best through a flat response output, like your DAW or a PA. Hope this helps.

Acne Studios did that one earring thing back in 2011 but come on, now it’s only wannabe hipsters who do it. Cringeworthy.
