    I have a DS-1 and find it very useful. Was thinking about trying an SD-1 to see what it does. Thanks for posting the vid, it's very helpful in giving an idea of the difference in sounds in the two pedals.

    This is a good demo of Boss' least-expensive overdrive, the SD-1, and the timeless distortion box, the DS-1. They do two different things. The video is an example of the difference, nothing else. That the SD-1 sounds good into a DS-1 is a subject for a different video. I swear by my DS-1. This vid is exactly what I was looking for before I add another overdrive to the chain.

    DS-1 sounds like it has a cold....more for rhythm playing so the mid scoop sound is not for everyone. SD-1 sounds more forward cos it has mid range bump....making it ideal for melodic playing.

  • @bojackhorseman5367

    @bojackhorseman5367

    4 жыл бұрын

    yep, the DS-1 is my go-to pedal for distorted rhythm tones because the mid scoop just helps it sit back in the mix without getting in the way of the vocals ;) On the other hand I find a lot of other distortion pedals push the guitar too much to the front of the mix and makes it fight against the vocals, or tend to be too grainy sounding, or too boomy in the low end, etc... the DS-1 is the most well balanced distortion pedal I've ever used, in that respect - it just sits right where it needs to in the mix. I have never understood why people complain that it's a thin, buzzy sounding pedal - only if you're stupid enough to turn the tone up all the way...

    Totally different circuits........ If you have a need to ADD a significant amount of distortion to your amp(like an amp with no preamp), then the DS-1 is the winner, but, if you have an amp that has a bit of gain ( Marshall Jcm 800 for example ) and want to fine tune it and increase gain and transient speed/response, the the SD-1 is the winner. The DS-1 is ok at giving a clean amp tone a heavily distorted tone, but if you have an amp that gets to Ac/dc tone ( again marshall 800) but want to take that to Van Halen Metallica territory, then the SD-1 ( as a BOOST)is the way to go. HI LO bandpass filter circuit is essentially what it is ( like a TScreamer).....trims off the high highs as well as the low lows giving the sound an accurate 'fine tuned' type sound.

    If you are using it on a clean amp, the SD-1 might sound a bit too "thin" for stuff like Godsmack and Mudvayne, so I'd go with the DS-1. However if you can get decent gain from the amp, the SD-1 can help with the tone. Also the DS-1 is a bit mid--scooped, so if you are playing with another guitarist you might run the risk of disappearing from the mix unless you compensate the mids with the amp
