Boss really nailed it with the Combo Drive and the Power Stack. They are hands-down the most organic, warm and rich-sounding distortion pedals in their line. You can mimic the overdriven Vox AC30 sound of Queen's Brian May to a tee with the Combo Drive. And if you want that raging sound of a wall of Marshall stacks, the Power Stack is for you. The Boss DS-1 used to be my go-to pedal for distorted tones, but I might retire it for one of these newer pedals.

I own lots of vintage, rare Boss and boutique pedals of all sorts. I would put this pedal up near the top of one I use more than anything else. It's sooooo good. Extremely underrated. You have to really work with your amp to use it in the high gain modes, but this pedal in the 'clean/crunch' settings makes Fender amps come alive like nothing else I've ever owned. Probably my most complimented tone comes from this pedal into a super clean Fender with 6L6s and moderate reverb.

I assume you mean the Joyo AC Tone? I've owned both, and I'm now selling the Joyo. For 40-ish dollars, it's not like you can go too wrong, but people need to understand that this is more than a distortion pedal. Pete shows some of the lower gain settings off, but he also ran it through a slightly dirty (IMO) amp. Back off the Sound knob even more (and adjust the level up) and you get an awesome CLEAN Vox tone! The Joyo AC Tone is harder to work with and distorts a little too easily.

Amazing review that really makes one want to buy this pedal (if I didn't already have an AC-30 I'd want it now), because you show us how those sounds have been used in some of the best guitar songs of all time. However, I've come to think that it's almost impossible to emulate the tone of "Tie Your Mother Down"; natural room reverb and physically turning an amp all the way up must be the key to it.
@martymclochlin4836
5 жыл бұрын
I'd buy one and still try it through ac30. Because while it is aiming to replicate ac30, it has its own unique sound and characteristics as well. I wish I bought 2 when I got mine. They were like 50 bucks

I have not tried power stack but this thing is awesome when you roll offf your volume. It maintains it's tone. Thats the thing most people dont do. They just keep their guitar volume and tone all the way up. There are great and usable sounds to be had with the bc2

Hey Pete, can I take this pedal and use it as a preamp to run straight in for recording?
@theanthill1001
9 жыл бұрын
Hey. Well I'm not Pete... but I'd say most likely not, if you want it to sound like it's running through an amp. It probably doesn't have power amp/cabinet emulation unless it tells you that it does... Having said that, you can always plug a guitar straight into the desk & see if you like the sound anyway - ditto with this or any pedal...
@TehGav12 жыл бұрын
[1:00] "I'll give you two guesses as to, uh, what kind of amp it's supposed to replicate." Is it a Fox J.C. Birdie? No wait, no wait... Is it a Knox Gay 3:30? Yes!!! ...Hold on, no. So it's a Watkins Dominator, eh?

They are not the "guitar hero" type of bullshit where the demo guy plays a million notes per second and talks about sustain that the pedal gives instead of the sound and the dynamics of the pedal. There's also a Carl Martin AC Tone.
Hey Pete! I know it's been a while since you review the BC-2. But I want to know, is this pedal can be used as a preamp pedal for an ampless rig ? Boss BC-2 going into an IR Simulation. What do you think ? Thanks Pete!
Convinced me, just bought one!
the opening tune is awesome, is it on your solo album?
Pete- you should ask Boss to reissue this one. This is a sleeper! They could sell a lot of these. It just came out at the wrong time.

Yes...
Hi Pete, direct question: AC-Tone or BC-2? Or is there any other Ac-in-a-box pedal you've tried that does beat these two?
Un grande
Sounds good for a boss, thx.
Great video! I wonder how it sounds compared to the Lovepedal Englishman...

I'd buy one and still try it through ac30. Because while it is aiming to replicate ac30, it has its own unique sound and characteristics as well. I wish I bought 2 when I got mine. They were like 50 bucks
do you use ezdrummer o something like that for the music tracks???
Dig your videos and playing :)
arrgh there matey... I see yer be sharin the settings fer the boHEEmiaN RapSOdee song but I don't be seein any fer the Edge tone that you had dialed in... Makes an old Irish Pirate like MEself sad in the heart I am
Hi Mr. Pete!!! One question: Using this pedal, where put the delay pedal, before or after it? Thank's and greetings!!!

After.
Very true. Cool vid ;)
@americ0yrupailla same here man, I would like that with the plexitone also
Great demo! Gone from being quite dismissive of this pedal to wanting one by the end of your video
so between this and the power stack which cleans up better when you turn down the guitar volume knob?

I have not tried power stack but this thing is awesome when you roll offf your volume. It maintains it's tone. Thats the thing most people dont do. They just keep their guitar volume and tone all the way up. There are great and usable sounds to be had with the bc2
Does this pedal sound better in a band/in a mix? Every time I try it in a shop it sounds shrill.

I think it does. especially if you put it through an amp with el84's. I just played it through a buddy's little blues junior and it sounded great!
Hey Pete, can I take this pedal and use it as a preamp to run straight in for recording?
@theanthill1001

Boss BC - 2 combo drive снята с производства и ее нигде нет в продаже !!! Есть boss PS - 6 !!!
What is the song at the beginning??
The perfect pedal to play blues music.
sounds a bit digital... is it ?
that first queen riff (name eludes me) was spot on tonally

Tie Your Mother Down?
It's clear what I must do now.
wtf!!! nice demo
Just like everyone here, I just love your demos. They are not the "guitar hero" type of bullshit where the demo guy plays a million notes per second and talks about sustain that the pedal gives instead of the sound and the dynamics of the pedal. Have you ever tried any Tech 21 pedals? I'm a huge fan of them and think that it would be interesting seeing what you gould do with the Character Series pedals...
I kinda of doubt that was his first song learned on the guitar, probably more like Eddy's Evolution solo which he mastered in a half afternoon. Great review as always.
Is this pedal like Boss's version of range master treble booster?

not really, this is a version of Vox ac15/30 (amps)

...but it is very similar
Wow, that DOES sound exactly like a Marshall MG10CD!!!! Just kidding, great demo Pete! I do believe you've sold another one! =)
great video .. just one question is this an OVERDRIVE or a DISTO pedal?? I'll appreciate someone reply me ..t-you =)

It's an Overdrive pedal. It simulates an overdriven combo amp sound. Thus the name. Has wide range of overdriven frequency, from very transparent to quite fat (not as fat as a Tube Screamer). Basically it's very versatile.
