Bosom Buddies (STEREO) - Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur - Mame

For fun, here is the stereo version of "Bosom Buddies" from the 1974 film adaptation of MAME, sung by stars Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur, synced to the final film footage.
Opening in 1966 on Broadway, MAME is based on the 1955 novel AUNTIE MAME by Patrick Dennis and a 1956 Broadway play, of the same name, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee.

Bea and Lucille's baritone voice is attributable to cigarettes. Not sure why but it has a different sound than a deep voice that occurs naturally. That being said, I have one too, and I learned to appreciate it as I got older.

@josettedaejung6309: Beatrice Arthur naturally had a low voice but Lucille Ball smoked worse than a polluted chimney-about 3 or 4 packs/day-which was the cause of her low voice. She did so much damage to it that she couldn’t be dubbed. In addition the excessive smoking weakened the cells in her face creating the sagged line look that required a soft filter throughout the film. The smoking also affected her breathing and therefore her interpretation of the songs. A terrible choice to play the role even if she paid $2 million of the $14 million film cost (about 14.3%). Too bad 20th Century Fox didn’t let her buy the title role in CLEOPATRA as they could have saved millions 😂

I think Mame, like West Side Story, works despite having a flawed lead. I don't think Richard Beymer is very good in WSS at all, and Natalie Wood is just passable. However, WSS is still a classic due to the music, the dancing, and Rita Moreno. I don't think the movie version of Mame is a classic, but I enjoy watching it. Randy Man, NEVER apologize for liking anything! : - )

It's called diffusion. A skilled and experienced director could get away with it. A talented director is able to play to the leading lady's vanity, using tricks with lighting and focus to take some years off of how she looks. That usually includes having some level of diffusion in all shots of a scene. When you ONLY have Lucy's close up shots and one person shots out of focus, and all the rest in focus, it's very obvious, and takes you out of the scene. It's exposes the leading lady's vanity, rather than hiding it. Lucy also had a system of taping behind her ears to make her face appear more taught, as she was afraid to go under the knife for plastic surgery. She actually looks pretty good here, all things considered. What's that quote from Sunset Boulevard? "There's nothing tragic about being 50, unless you're trying to be 25"

Grayson Sparkman If Lucy had done this a decade and a half earlier she would have sounded much better. Shouting so the audience could hear her on the set of "I Love Lucy," coupled with raising her voice an octave so Lucy Ricardo would sound younger and more innocent and naive, followed by exhausting herself working on "Wildcat," and, of course, smoking three packs of cigarettes a day just destroyed her voice. Lucy was never a professional singer, but when she was younger she could at least sing competently.

Very good. I actually did 6 songs from the film onto a DVD-R, used the DVD release from the film and the Rhino soundtrack which is in true stereo, and those 6 songs actually match perfectly. How much better a musical is in stereo, even though I hate what Lucy did to some of these top Broadway songs. I wish Warner would have just used what they could do in stereo, and left the rest in mono, at least we would be able to watch the film on the new blu-ray and get SOME of the songs in stereo. It's Today syncs perfectly, but the title tune doesn't because it was shortened for the soundtrack album (sadly). That would have been a great number in stereo.

That’s the problem. If there wasn’t something to compare it too..it would have very different reviews. I never saw the Broadway show and I know Lucille Ball was not a singer but her character would have a voice like hers...raspy and rough. She was not off-key but people just keep comparing her to Angela Lansbury. I can’t imagine Angela looking as divine as Lucille Ball did in the movie!

@@angelgstagwhat are you talking about? She was not divine. Do you know how many flattering angles and Vaseline screens they did to make Lucy look good? Angela would have done just as well. She was always just as regal without all that foolishness. Had they remade it to be like the Roseland Russel version, Lucy might have done a way better job. Just as quirky just no songs.

Algernon Moncrieff: "Women only do that when they have called each other a lot of other things first.”

Interesting how Bea Arthur's voice echoes on the lyric "My crony"; maybe because Lucy had to record her songs one line at a time. Actually, this is one of Lucy's better songs, and Bea sounds better than she does on the cast album because she can sing in a lower key she seems more comfortable with. But Lucy reciting lines like "Your voice is the voice of a frog" and "It's time to adjust to your age": talk about asking for it!
