Borough Market in London - What You Should Eat | London Street Food Tour!

Borough Market is one of the most famous and renowned fresh markets in London. Get all information here: migrationology.com/2014/05/bor...
There are many famous things to do in London, but if you're a food lover like I am, one of the best choices you can make it to take a trip to the historical Borough Market. The market is one of the most well-known in all of London. The history goes way back, and it was formerly a place where people came and gathered to trade and sell their fresh produce. For many years it was very informal and without structure. But the official Borough Market was established in 1885, the place that we can visit today.
We were only in London for a couple of days, attending the Chowzter.com food awards (chowzter.com/), and one thing I knew we needed to do, was visit Borough Market with an empty stomach. It was Friday morning at about 10 AM when we decided to go - and I think it was just about a perfect time - because many of the vendors were just opening up, and the market wasn't as packed as it could be. The best things to do as soon as you arrive to Borough Market is to take a leisurely stroll around and see what is available for you to eat - there are too many things to eat in one visit, so it's important that you choose wisely, and decide what you want to eat.
Some of the most famous things include the salt beef sandwich, the grilled cheese sandwich, the duck confit sandwich, chorizo, and many other delicious things. But along with cooked food, there's also a range of cured meats, and wonderful cheeses. I also really enjoyed the fresh produce, which included a nice variety of mushrooms and beautiful heirloom tomatoes.
But anyway let's get back to the food, and I'm talking about the food ready to be eaten. As soon as I arrived I saw a stack of cheese and olive bread-sticks which were piled high like a pyramid. That was my first treat. The long bread-stick was crusty and embedded with salty cheese and delicious olives. While walking around, in the back part Borough Market, we decided to try a Portuguese egg tart. It was good but I thought it could've been better if it was a little warmer. Next up we tried a sausage on a stick from a place called Boston Sausage. I added a bunch of English mustard to it, and I think that's what made it so good.
If you want to drink coffee, when you visit London's Borough Market you cannot miss the famous Monmouth coffee shop. It can be quite busy and hard to find a seat, so we decided just to get takeaway coffee, as I really needed something to wake me up and keep me energized to eat more. My little shot of macchiato was fantastic.
Back to the food, we went to a place called Brindisa and ordered up one of their famous chorizo sandwiches. The chorizo was very tasty, and had a nice spicy flavor to it, but I thought the bread was way too big for the amount of meat. If I ordered it again, I would for sure get the double chorizo. Finally for my last sandwich at Borough Market, I went with the famous duck confit sandwich. You'll see the incredible pan of duck confit when you visit the market, and if you're like me, it should entice you to eat it immediately. When you order, the vendor fills up a bunch of duck into a ciabatta roll. The duck was incredibly tender, juicy, and oily, and it was amazingly tasty. That just about wrapped up everything I ate at Borough Market in London. There were still many more things I wanted to try, but like I said, it would be a near impossible feat to eat everything in one visit to the market. If you want to eat and you're in London, this is one of the best places to visit.
Visit Borough Market information:
Open for lunch on Monday -- Tuesday from 11 am -- 5 pm
Full market is open on Wednesday -- Thursday from 11 am -- 5 pm, Friday from 10 am -- 6 pm, and Saturday from 8 am -- 5 pm (closed on Sunday)
Prices: It would not be hard to spend 20 GBP per person eating here
Website: boroughmarket.org.uk/
How to get to there: I think the easiest way is to take the London underground tube to London Bridge Station and then just follow the exit signs that will lead directly to Borough Market.

Chuck Norris You can really says it’s bland and boring. A lot of European cultures include a huge variety of herbs, some spices and aromatics into their food. The UK has adjusted itself to use other cuisines around the world and never really create their own. Quite a good idea due to the fact history in the UK is so dense we don’t really need a history of cuisine.

I mean, when you buy a 2 foot "cheese stick" and a burnt egg-custard thing, you're gonna be disappointed - what even are those things? London is a City with some of the most authentic, multi-cultural foods in the world... he wasn't exactly trying the best of London here...

@@timmartin2894 I guess he was not there to try the food you have from other cultures, rather to have the experience of the authentic British food. Because the international food you are talking about, I bet he know them already, and actually their authentic taste, having visited and explored their actual countries and cultures. I mean if I want to eat the best Thai or South Asian food I better go to Thailand or South Asian countries, not the UK.

I won't pretend english food is something I hold in extremely high regard, but that being said......I 'cannot' believe you guys don't have some amazing stuff in the right places. I wouldn't go to a street market to sample a countries food though. There's probably cool english restaurants with cool stuff. I'm gonna hunt them down next time i go there :)

@trek2space That is why our national dish is Curry lol. Our food is quite bland compared to others around the world. I mean there isn't exotic spices or tastes infused with English food, it's basically salt and pepper that is powering our food. For example, pie/bangers and mash, fish and chips, toad in a hole, roast dinner vs Jerk chicken. As much as I love fish and chips, our food is clearly not in the exciting flavoursome category. And regarding the Eastern European food, as in the former soviet countries? If so, ain't your food basically meat in water? Pretty sure we have you beat there. I'd rather eat from Greggs :)

The thing about the food stalls in Borough Market is that they're mostly meant to fuel you up as you explore the city - they're not meant to be some kind of mind-blowing street food experience. So here's the right way to do it: you grab some of the hand-dived, grilled scallops from the scallop guy as a starter, and then you grab a main - I prefer the venison burger or the salt beef sandwich, but there is a plethora of options. Then you grab a nice strong Belgian beer from the beer seller (whose stall is crammed with several hundred different choices), you crack it open on the side of his stall, and you make your way over to the seating area. You find a spot to squeeze into, you munch your food, sip your beer, feed the birdies, and watch the people. When you're done, you go over to the sweets section, where they serve some excellent pastries and chocolates, and you pick out a few of these for your pudding - of course you take them with you to Monmouth Coffee, where you wash them down with some of the best coffee anywhere outside of Italy. You step outside (trying not to get run over by a black cab), take a deep breath, and once again dig your teeth into London... And that, my friend, is how you get the most out of the food stalls at Borough Market.

I'm a Londoner and have been since birth, the food is great, its the most multicultural city in the world (or at least one of), of course the food isn't going to be top notch everywhere. Markets really are tourists traps in London, no one who lives in London really goes out to a market to eat food since its a rip-off most of the time. Restaurants are where London shines, street food really isn't a thing in London to be fair which is why you won't be impressed. Its a city where you really need to sit down and eat to fully experience such a diverse culture.

London is not a great food city. And it's not that multi-cultural compared to the US. Put it this way. I live in a small area north of Detroit in Michigan, USA. I can drive a short distance and have Middle Eastern food, American Chinese food, Filipino food, Indian food, Vietnamese food, Polish food, Italian American food, Mexican American food. Korean barbecue. It's all possible. Inexpensive. Large quantities. Free refills on soft drinks. Free tap water. ice cold. I spent some time in London quite awhile ago, so I can't speak to its current food state. I'm sure it is better. But it can't hold a candle to any large urban US city when it comes to food.

wpl With London is a bit weird because in Central London you have that iconic city littered with landmarks that every tourist imagines London to be but it gets very different a couple miles out. I'm not sure where you've been in London but depending on the location the available food changes dramatically. Touristy London mostly has the upscale European cafes/restaurants (with some exeptions) which I admit is a bit dull. Most definitely tourist traps as they charge ridiculous prices. Then there's the rest of London, this is where you find one of the most diverse communities in the world. Just on my street I've got plenty to choose from, mostly Indian joints with the odd South American bar/grill and then the classic chippy and kebab shop, all this on a small 300m street which isn't too bad. I definitely have to say London is far more multicultural than the US in more ways than one. Its one of the first cosmopolitan cities and is home to a very wide variety of people. Its hard for me to explain it to be honest, I've lived in the US for 1.5 years in LA roughly a decade ago and it was multicultural but it seemed fake. It just lacked authenticity really, I'm not sure whether it was due to the neighbourhood I lived in but most of the Chinese and Indian (very few Indian spots mind you) had slightly altered tastes. They were a bit toned down to cater to the people of LA I guess. With London there really isn't much of this, usually fully authentic. The US may be big but it isn't actually *that* diverse when compared to London, in a square mile you'd probably encounter a larger variety of people from different backgrounds. Eh its hard to explain what I mean without offending anyone (when I mean no harm) so I'll just leave it at that.

I'm afraid I have to add to goot's comments here, guy knows. You've done it wrong if you assume that Detroit is a better food city than London. London is a huge city with a diverse population, which is centered around many areas, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis to the east, Indians to the west, Jamaicans in the brixton, elephant and castle and notting hill area, there's a huge Brazilian and Portuguese area there too, A large Jewish population in Stamford Hill and Golders Green, as well as Japenese, a large south asian population in tooting and around that way, a huge Korean population in New Malden, ethiopian restaurants in highbury and holloway, great turkish restaraunts up the green lanes ladder, persian and lebanese around the edgeware road, vietnamese around haggerston and hoxton and i could go on.... ... and of course other nationalities all mixed in. The important thing is that the food in these places is all AUTHENTIC. Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants - Tayyabs and Lahore kebab in Aldgate Indian - thousands - kricket, veeraswanys, slightly commercial but dishoom etc. Caribbean - Rum kitchen, or Blue mountain rum lounge Portuguese - Taberna do mercado, bar douro Jewish - Montys Deli in maltby st (altho its moving) Japanese - Koya in soho, Roka South asian - Apollo banana leaf in tooting or hoppers in soho Korean - Jin go gae in new malden etc etc etc, and i'm not even trying. Borough market is not brilliant to be honest, it's been touristified and the prices reflect it, it's not awful, just a bit knowing these days. Maltby St market is a better shout, or any of the ones which pop up in bermondsey or southwark way. Out east in stokey and shoreditch there are a few too. London is one of the best cities in the world for food. Hands down. Don't eat fish and chips in London, in fact, don't eat it anywhere you can't see the sea. Whitby's where its at, or mersea for seafood, devon crab etc...

Goot - I understand exactly what you meant. Although, I'm hardly an expert on this subject having been to London for just two weeks, years ago. My opinion is based on my observations and experience only. London is more culturally diverse and obviously so bc it's more compact, I felt. So in any given day, you may encounter people from at least 6 different ethnic backgrounds, while the US is more spread out, so diversity is not as obvious. I have to say, although the food portions are quite small compared to what US is used to, the best Thai and Indian meals I've ever tasted was in the Knightsbridge area of London if I remember right.
