This is so devastating because Boris was imo the only leader capable of leading the UK into its next chapter (its permanent breakup and irreparablely dimished role in world affairs)

You clearly know absolutely nothing about UK politics. Johnson is a corrupt crook, leading corrupt crooks. The great majority of people in the UK hate him and it's only due to him that the UK is a mess and a joke.

Not so much now.
Britain's doll-haired PAWG is hanging up the jersey, folks. It's here.
"Gough" (as in "Gough Whitlam") rhymes with the last syllable of "Hasselhoff". He wasn't just "relatively left-wing for Australia". He presided over the passage of the Health Insurance Act of 1973 and got rid of University fees. He also pardoned all Vietnam draft dodgers. There is no figure in American history who is in the same league as Whitlam where the game is being "left-wing". Some combination of FDR unmarred by the racism and LBJ unmarred by the colonial wars might get you in the ballpark of Whitlam. The Double Dissolution election of 1975 is apparently what you get when the owners of the Commonwealth feel threatened by minor reforms. It's worth study as an example of an exercise of raw power, like Bush v. Gore or Dobbs v. Jackson. I can't believe that I have written all this to you. Good show. Keep it up.

Unusually, given how well informed they are on all things limey, they've got the beer thing completely wrong. The Brits are mocked by beer drinking nations like the belgians, germans and Czechs for *not* having heads on their pints. You need a good 2cm head at least but the brits have almost nothing and get angry if you leave a head on their beer.

For the record, when Australia had a referendum we didn't vote 'no' because we loved the Queen. We voted 'no' because the conditions for how a President would be elected weren't well liked. It was something to the effect of 'the senate would elect the President, not the people'. Very few people under 90 like the queen here.

Feel like shit just want him back
I know next to nothing and don't quote me but afaik the reason he eventually left was because the ominously named '1922 Committee' (doubtless named after some heroic massacre of colonial savages in the Brahmaputra Valley or whatever) who served as the Boris Fanclub in Parliament (saved him from No Confidence) told him they were out and had a way to trigger another no-confidence in their back pocket if he didn't fuck off tout suite.
@FirstnameLastname-kn5sw
2 жыл бұрын
Lol, he would have just asked them to hold the vote like they did the first time. Clearly some Tory donating demons were dissatisfied with economic policies that were not vampiric enough for them and they used the Pincher story as a smokescreen while they blackmailed him or his family backstage, or maybe just threatened to lock him out of any future financial rewards.
@patrickholt2270

The reason for the name is so banal I can't be bothered to repeat it. It's strictly parliamentary bullshit.
@weejockpoopongmcplop

The 1922 Committee is all the Tory backbenchers so while they were his biggest fans just after the 2019 election most of these guys had soured on him already because of recent polling and by-election results and they mainly wanted him gone. He was saved from the vote of no confidence by the frontbenchers i.e. the people he gave jobs to. Which it turns out is a surprisingly large number of people nobody outside of Westminster has ever heard of. But as the Chapo guys say the word went out that Boris was toast and for some reason this Pincher episode was the final straw even though I don't think the general public were that invested in that particular story.
@saladdodger4722
2 жыл бұрын
A No Confidence vote is basically a lose-lose as a win just means you lose slightly later down the line. He's had so many scandals over the past 12 months and the current crisis of inflation and a summer of industrial action has lead to his poll numbers crashing and the Conservatives are losing seats so they basically let him take all the blame and get someone new in as a fresh coat of paint similar to what they did with May and Johnson where they distance themselves to the prior 12 years of Tory rule. Plus the Conservative party is full of career driven narcissists who want to play Prime Minister themselves, if they think they see an opening they'll band together to topple the head and scramble over one another to replace them, there's not much loyalty and the ones who are loyal are the stupid ones.

The Canadian constitution says that if the British get rid of the monarchy then we just carry on like nothing at all happened and keep appointing governor-generals who no longer now have to be affirmed by the monarch. No party has enough power to ammend the constitution and so that's our plan. We also wouldn't legally be able to recognize a British president because their existence is unconstitutional and they would have no influence in our country.

@TheFirebird123456
2 жыл бұрын
Sort of a coup but not really... really was that the entire country was sick and tired of boris scandals. Examples of these scandals were having parties in no 10 while the rest of Britain was in lockdown. The pincher scandal which brought him down was him selecting an mp to be whip who he knew was an abuser and then that guy was accused of sexually harassing 2 men last week. His colleagues just forced him to resign or they would fund another way to force him out. It was either that or the conservatives get crushed in the next election.
