Borealis Closing Concert: Roscoe Mitchell & John McCowen

Ойын-сауық

A special evening of composition in real time from Roscoe Mitchell and John McCowen. As a tireless explorer of improvisation and multi-instrumental performance, Mitchell’s multimedia solo HOMONCULUS sees the 81 year old legend duet with himself across time and space. Through a new film made in collaboration with film maker Wendy Nelson, Mitchell, live in Bergen performs saxophone and percussion with Roscoe at home in Wisconsin, creating possibilities of multidimensional solo-ing and expression that explore the full range of Mitchell's instrumental interests. Joining Mitchell on stage for the second half of the concert is his one time student and now collaborator John McCowen. In their specially prepared duo performance UOOU, McCowen's micro timbral explorations of the contrabass clarinet meet Mitchell's bass saxophone playing, to create an unusual and dynamic combination of these two rarely heard low end instruments. Closing a week of performances and conversations with Roscoe Mitchell, this final concert for the festival brings together many facets of Mitchell as a performer and music creator, don't miss out!
Produced and initiated by Bergen Kunsthall and Borealis - a festival for experimental music.
Presented with support by Bergen Jazzforum.

This reminds me of the experience of improvising to a large screen moving image. The sense was of being overwhelmed by it, and of not being able to get the energy to measure up to it. This video was a good idea, but I wonder how workable this is, given the massive takeover of perception of huge visuals.

Either go with the flow or layout. What's the big deal?

The big deal is being a student of music. @@jessenowells2920
