The nation who whose very name means Borderland has been home to nomads for millenia. As a pawn in the games of larger European powers, how did Ukraine become the complex geopolitical entity it is today? Cossacks, Tatars, Mongols and Vikings only scratch the surface of this ancient land

Kyiv as an "old khazar trading post" (7-8 century) - is one of the speculations (others are - Antean, Hunnic, Avarian and other settlements). Scandinavian saga describes it as a 4th century Gothic settlement Danparstaрðir (Arheimar). Written Slavic and Armenian sources say that city was founded in the 5th century by East Slavic tribe Polans.

Watch the video again. Most of the area that has been in dispute was not part of Ukraine until it was placed under the administration of the Ukraine SSR in 1922 (Donbas to Odessa) and 1954 (Crimea). These areas have been Russian since Catherine the Great. The Ukrainian Civil War, which started after a United States backed overthrow of the elected Ukrainian government in 2014, is a war for independence of Russians from the yoke of Ukrainian ultranationalist rule.

I'm from Dumfries in the south of Scotland, during the war there was a large camp outside of Lockerbie where lots of Ukranian soldiers who faught for Germany were held. After the war the Soviets asked for them to be handed over to them, fearing they'd be executed the British government catagorised them as Captured Enemy Combatants rather then POWs and refused to hand them over. Many emigrated to the United States but many others settled in the area, there is a memorial and chapel built by them just outside of Lockerbie and Ukranian surnames like Striciw are common in the area.

FYI, the modern international name of Ukraine’s capital is Kyiv. Kiev is the Russian name. It literally means “Kyi’s”, with the name referring to the legendary founders of the city: the brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv and their sister Lybid. There are three hills in the city named after the brothers. The sister had a river named after her, but you’d be hard-pressed to find it these days, as it’s mostly underground or bordered by concrete thanks to railroad construction

Fun fact: "horde" actually comes from the middle-Mongolian word for temple. It seems to have been extended to mean any large, public gathering place for fellowship, and then (in Turkish, in particular) it was retracted again to mean a camp, and then a group of Mongolic nomads who would normally set up such a camp. It comes from the same root as "Urdu," the name of the language, which is a contraction of the phrase "zaban-i-urdu," meaning "language of the camps."

Thank you for this very informative video. There is a independent rap (music) artist, that I am acquainted with, who hails from Ukraine. Going by the stage name, "MC Val," much of her music is devoted to the ongoing conflicts of Ukraine. This video has helped enlighten me further so that now I can better comprehend the very socially vocal, as well as musically entertaining songs that this incredible rap artists writes and performs. FYI: "MC Val" does have several music videos up on KZread, and I know that at least one, if not more, of her videos depicts some of the struggles that she and so many other Ukrainians are contending with.
