Border Models 1/32 Avro Lancaster BI/BIII
In this new series we build Border’s reincarnation of the Wingnut Wings Avro Lancaster in 1/32 scale.
For the first episode we concentrate on the pilot’s position and instrument panel.

Be careful. It will be calling out to you. I caved when I first saw the sprue reviews.
OH MY!! The size of the BOX!!! It looks like the size of a moving box!!! WOW!!! Nice work on the cockpit so far! I believe Wingnut Wings went out of business when this was still early in development. They were still likely in the quality assurance, and functionality phase of engineering. It sounds like HK, and border models just aren't up to Wingnut Wings standards. However, for over $700, you would think that you wouldn't already be running into issues on page one! You are doing an amazing job with it as usual though! Eagerly awaiting the next update!

Really looking forward to both of these builds. I think the Wingleader book on the Lancaster is a must given what you've said about the instructions.

FYI Steve. Just about every British aircraft in WW2 had RAF interior green as a standard, with certain things like the panels, radios being black. Obviously, there were other knobs and switches with random colour details, all dependent on aircraft type. It can be hard to imagine but, I’ve seen that repeatedly on a few different Lancasters, one Hurricane, one Mosquito, three different Spitfires, a couple of Ansons. The colour swatches and legend from your Tamiya Mosquito instructions are a really great help.

I used the seat with the moulded in seat belts. With careful painting they look excellent, far better than etch belts. The mouldings that good!!!

I shall follow with interest! And yes, twas I that said this was the most disappointing release of the year when it came out, mainly due to the canopy/clear parts travesty, but more so for me was the lack of inflight ability. As I have the HK version as well, I intend on creating 2 models, kitbashing the Border interior to make a cutaway with the HK exterior parts and using some external and internal HK parts to help get the Border Lanc in the air! Cheers Chris

Nice work Steve, looks great already, this kit is still for sale in Australia on special for around $950.00 AUD, the new Dam Buster is just over $1050.00 AUD, looks like a good line up for the next lot of builds, I'll be interested to see what you can do with the Italeri kit...

I wonder if the issue with the seat not sitting level is because you removed those plastic side pieces? I think I would sand off the moulded seatbelts on the alternate seat and use that instead. Of course, that would depend on whether or not there was a seat cushion or if the pilot sat on his parachute. A pity WnW didn’t release this kit - the instructions would have been much much better. You’re doing a marvellous job on this, Steve, and I’m following intently because I really want to build a 1/32 scale Lancaster. 👍🏻👍🏻🙂
@TheModelShed
4 ай бұрын
thanks Ronald there was often a seat cushion and the parachute stowed on the back of the seat. Maybe on reflection I would use the molded belt option if I did it again. but I’m not so I won’t 😂😂
Steve, might I suggest you using Tenax 7R, or Plastruct plastic weld. They handle bonding disparate types of plastics.

Looking good! Can i ask a couple of questions please: What mix of green / grey did you use to get the internal green colour? How did you go about painting the photoetch seat belts? Looking forward to part 2!
@TheModelShed
4 ай бұрын
The mix was just by eye - I’m guessing 1 part grey in 10 green but you should experiment. The belts are annealed and shaped: primed and sprayed overall khaki drab, then brush painted with lighter and darker mixes of the KD to shade them a bit. finally pick out the buckles and studs with a bit of silver.
ok on that a round Lancaster go to an old royal Air force museum if they don't have one thear find an old bomber pilot that flew one an ask him what the colors wear
