The phrase " W.C. Fields type" is most apt here. Still, we're going to take advice about drinking from a character who embraces the long term effects? Like the "Pink Elephant" in another film, how do you believe the hallucination? Kinda like steakhouses and seafood places decorated with pics of what you're about to eat (though some are moving away from that). Humans are strange.

He's based on W.C. Fields, who was Hollywood's most famous alcoholic in the 1920s to 40s. He died as a direct result of his drinking in 1946.

@@ladyrose3285 He was born in 1880. Given what kind of a hard life he had under his abusive father (who tried to suppress his talents for juggling and comedy) it isn't any wonder he turned to drink. What is really incredible about him is that despite his drinking, he was still a superb juggler. In the 1930s when he was a full-on alcoholic he did do a juggling routine (it's on KZread, look it up if you haven't) that is extremely remarkable for someone who constantly drunk all the time.

"Stout" beer, or "Porter", does actually have a certain nutritional value - iron, principally, and B vitamins, I believe, but I'm not a nutritionalist. That's why Guinness used to be able to get away with that slogan, "Guinness is Good For You". Another one used to be "Murphy - For Strength". (You might not want to live on it, though, although that doesn't stop some from trying!) In fact - and save the wisecracks - as late as the '70's, some Irish maternity hospitals would allow new mothers a (modest) stout ration, ⅔ of a pint, I believe, _after_ having the child, of course! Of course it wouldn't fly today; in those days, I'm told, they provided ashtrays on the bedside lockers, as well! (Although this might be, at least in part, apocryphal, in regard to maternity hospitals at any rate, my mother having been an inveterate smoker who was almost _proud_ of the fact that she smoked throughout all of her pregnancies!)
