Boox Tab Ultra C vs. Bigme Inknote Color+: Follow-Up

Ғылым және технология

A few months ago I did a detailed look at these two devices. Now that Bigme released a solid update to their device which addresses ghosting, I thought I would reassess and see how the two devices stacked up. Enjoy!

Great review, thanks. For me the Bigme Inknote Color+ is way cheaper than the Tab Ultra C and also cheaper than the Note Air 3 C and writing feel is important for me.

Great review, liked and subscribed. Could you please give some insight into your experience using it as a secondary screen with Spacedesk?

I haven't done that before, but a few folks have asked me about that, so I guess I should be looking into it. I'll do that and post my thoughts.

Just wanted to drop a quick note on this. I installed Spacedesk on both devices and then tried it out. I'll need to play with it more, and I'll do a video for sure, but wanted to let you know that both devices seemed to handle the app well. The mouse wasn't as smooth on either device as it was on my LCD screen, but it was tolerable. And I was able to use touch controls on the Eink tablets as well.

Thank you for this comparison review. Are there any performance differences in terms of speed?

Not that I could discern. Both are pretty snappy. I think the Boox has a bit smoother animations, like with scrolling, but in terms of actual speed I didn't notice a difference.

That highlighting sounds like it's highlighting links, which should be an app or accessibility setting, not a device thing. Also, after getting my own TUC, I realized there are two other categories that might be worth considering, though they might also be a bit harder to judge: The first is accessories and covers, in particular. On the Boox side of things, their first party covers are both extremely expensive and extremely low quality. There are also very few compatible third party covers and the ones that do exist have significant drawbacks. (For example, the cover I currently have is, generally, pretty good, but it doesn't have a cutout for the rear camera. The second issue is how they handle compressing more complex color combinations into the more limited color space the e-ink screens can display, which can result in REALLY obvious artifacting, in addition to the normal loss of fidelity that you might expect. It doesn't happen with the large blocks of solid colors, that most tests rely on, or even the more rigorous comparisons that you did-thank you for that, again-but it becomes extremely obvious when you have regions of finely textured colors or color gradients in a small area, like when something is partially shadowed. This isn't too big of an issue with traditional comics, but web comics can use more complex color pallets and I've found them much less pleasant to read on my TUC. If you'd like to test this, I could recommend a few examples that display this issue pretty prominently.

I do generally prefer the cover and stylus provided with the Bigme vs. the ones Boox provides or can be purchased separately. In terms of colors, I just wanted to compare the two devices. Kaleido 3 only has just under 4.1k of colors, so it's going to struggle with accuracy and will often use software tricks to fill in spaces (e.g. dithering, etc.). I'm actually impressed by how well images look given that very fundamental limitation.

Easy PDF can make reading PDFs a lot easier on most of these devices. The native PDF app seems to be pretty good for markup.

Could you share the heating experience on both the devices?

  • @jeffreymoss

I really haven't noticed much of that, but I don't really use them intensively enough for that to be a potential issue. I mostly do notetaking on the Bigme, and that's just not enough to generate heat. Having said that, during testing where I'm pushing the devices more, I still didn't encounter any issues where I noticed any warmth.

Problem with the boox is that I cannot reduce the font size in a lot of apps. Not great in a lot of apps. I don't need giant fonts on a 10inch device!

Actually I do think Bigme is better at that, with app specific DPI settings. That's how I got google news to look similar on each device.

A few weeks ago I commented that Bigme should use their 8 CPU cores to clean up ghosting in scrolling operations. Less than a week later, here comes an update and they have been doing what I suggested apparently. Not perfect, but definitely better, without the expense and power consumption of a GPU and larger, heavier battery.

Well done! It really did make me change my thinking about the role of the GPU chip in the Tab series devices. I think the Boox devices still scroll better due to that chip, but it's hard to say the chip is that critical to ghosting given what Bigme has done.

I really appreciate your review. However, I think there is one fatal flaw when you compare annotation and export of pdf’s. Many people report, that they can’t export their annotated pdf’s!! This is a catastrophy for people who use this function, eg. for studies. For me this alone will render the Boox completely useless! So if Bigme can do this without problems, then this is a huge win for the Bigme. I am really surprised, that most reviewers don’t tackle this topic, which for many is a very important function. Another related problem with the Boox is, that you can't highlight the text without obscurring it. The hightlights are a layer on top of the letters and not behind it. I think this is a huge problem. It would be great if you could take these matters into consideration. Thanks!

Yes, thanks for calling that out. I'll add export of PDF annotations to my list of things to review going forward. In terms of highlighting, I have a number of videos where I show Bigme being superior to Boox in that regard -- at least as it pertains to notetaking.

I should add one more thing. I'm not sure if you will be interested in this or not, but I've been working with an app called Syncthing that functions on my PC and as an app on my Boox device. The set-up was a bit involved, but now files are automatically (as long as both apps are running) saved between devices. This includes marked PDFs. So that's a potential solution to consider. I might be dropping that video in a week, which will show my set-up process.

Heard that Boox is easily broke and needs babying. So I’m buying the Bigme which need less babying.

I haven't had any issues, but I do tend to take good care of my devices. I did use the original Note Air as a daily driver at work for about a year and didn't experience any breakage despite carrying it around with me. But having said all that, Bigme makes good devices too. Maybe not as sophisticated as Boox in terms of the notetaking and reading apps, but still quite good.

I usually handle my device roughly and in rush, and I learned from the forum that the screens of all the Boox lineup cannot withstand such abuse. Therefore, I opted to order the Bigme instead. Thank you for your review, it assisted me in making the decision. I hope that the meeting function in the Bigme work as advertise. It would be an added bonus.

That's a feature I never got into but heard others make use of, particularly the latter meeting function. I just don't use any device to record meetings except perhaps Teams. How do you leverage those features?

I imagine it would save me a lot of time and brain power for those admin meetings where people spent an hour discussing only a few items. I just want to know what's been discussed and what decisions were made. It would also be helpful as a research tool where we conduct interviews and see themes en vivo. But this is based on the premise that the feature works well.
