I needed this so much since I started my drawabox program as a beginner before going deep into your anatomy because there one can learn how things work in 3Dand how to get that perspective of things in 3D so that it will be easier for figure drawing when one has a knowledge of how things work in 3D space. I was losing focus on the texture part of it but now I'm certain after listening to your podcast I'm gonna go on my daily grind until I complete the drawabox program and start learning anatomy from your vids. I don't know if you read KZread comments but I just want to say you and Marshall are an inspiration for so many of beginners and it's great to learn from professionals.

Proko it's all about your own self discipline and state of mind. Good thing I'm 14 and don't have to worry about adult problems but spend 5 hours everyday drawing the human figure and doing anatomy studies. I don't know how but I just kind of power through it, and have fun with it as well even when I get tired. So I think the most fun way to improve is to make a little work schedule like for example 1 hour: quick sketch 2 hours:figure lay ins You can change it up day to day but one of the reasons why I don't want to draw sometimes Is because I don't know what to practice or what to start drawing on my own. So a training program really helps and you just follow your mentors instructions and it's entertaining. So to sum up how people stay focused- passion.

I really struggled with focus last year, and focused entirely on improving it in the beginning of this one. First off, I quit videogames / drinking / partying almost entirely. I had a lot of problems with my neurotransmitters, to the point that I couldn't focus for more than 10 mins on anything. During this detox phase, I used Pomodoro techniques to focus on sprints of 25 mins with resting periods. Months later my concentration has really improved. Recently I've been waking up really early to try and start the day with making art before my day job, and ending the day with practicing.

I found this really interesting and it hits home. I've wanted to learn to draw and sculpt for years, buy all the equipment and then sit at my desk watching Netflix with all the equipment next to me. After watching the shows have this anger towards myself but it doesn't seem strong enough to change my habits. Saying that I have started sculpting in the past week and went back to watching your videos on drawing the Loomis' head, and instead of sitting watching my 2.5-year-old play and watch cartoons I got a piece of MDF, A4 paper and a red pencil. Within 10 minutes I'd drawn 20+ badly drawn heads with an overhand grip. That is 20 more than I've done in 2 years. Sometimes you don't have the tranquility to draw or work and just have to plow through it. It's going to be a long road, but here's to starting. P.S. Anyone want to play a drinking game next Podcast? The rules are you take a shot every time Marshall references a quote. Good Luck.

I'm not a professional artist but I love sketching, art journaling, and am now trying my hand at acrylic painting. I have literally a corner of my bedroom where I set up a small studio, if you will, with a table and I store my supplies in my closet and a stand that's behind the table. What helps me staying focused and disciplined is taking a few moments a day and looking at other sketches and pieces of art and also watching others paint and it just invigorates me and then I'm just needle-sharp focused! Thanks for all of these podcasts, these are so helpful even for us amateurs!

My tip for small spaces is to have some of your art supplies visible. It creates a constant reminder to create. For example, I have my most used drawing supplies in jars on my desk. I also have my paints in a cart. I noticed when I made my tools visible and easily accessible I was more productive.

I have just recently gotten a small space for my art, one of my favourite things is larger flower pots for storing stuff like tape, clothes, palettes, paints, and other things. I like it because you can put it against the wall and it doesn’t stick out like a box would. Idk it’s random but it’s something I noticed that I really liked using. Also make it place where you feel happy in. I think that’s important for me at least. I have serval small things that I can look at and it makes me feel more inspired, like small action figures, my comic books, my ukulele, my tiny spoons, etc. And then just keeping it clean and organized is a lot bigger of a deal than I thought. Otherwise I find my mind while working can start thinking about all the things on the floor. And when I do vacuum and tidy up I feel much more focused. Also make it a place for working from the start. If it is possible for you don’t let it become a place where you watch movies or play video games. I find that way when I enter that small room I know it’s time to work and I can focus better. Like you guys said less distractions the better. Hopefully that was some what helpful and made sense.

Listening to music can certainly help beat stress and anxiety while creating, studying etc. It just depends on the style of music and how we absord it. This has been scientifically shown. It can also be distracting, of course... But with a mindful relationship, it can be a powerfully meditative tool to help us find a grounded flow state

Man, for me before painting I had to learn how to focus and understanding that has been one of the biggest hurdles to overcome in my life, I ended up in a "behavioral hospital" because I couldn't focus, my dream was dying and I fell in a huge depression, I was thinking about committing to the bullet and stop with my chaotic life. After many years I was finally diagnosed with severe adhd, Its been two years since my diagnosed and my skills have improved so much that eventhough I am in first of visual development I got hired 6 months ago as a concept artist, it's been a blessing for me but more than ten years of almost no drawing or painting made me fall behind as an artist and I am now desperately trying to regain the time that I lost. That's kind of my story.

  • @acidset

    @acidset

Yeah, but there's ways to manually or midfully limit distractions digitally as well. As in, the best way of establishing or disrupting habits is getting actually rid of things that tempt/distract you and things that you need readily available, more prominent or tempting, handy at all times. On PC though it's more about resisting distractions, if that doesn't work I guess uninstall games/log out of social media or blacklist it at least for a while and rearrange the desktop and taskbar, browser.

...Wow. I've been unknowingly battling ADHD my entire life. Every day, every week, I had to experiment with countless strategies to simply function, and I rarely ever got to the average person's level of operation. After finally experiencing effective medication for the past month, discipline and hard work have been unbelievably easy to be consistent with. Drawing, learning, and practicing for hours everyday is just normal. Playing video games, watching videos - all of my available distractions just seem like deliberate decisions to indulge in, rather than temptations I have to fight. Even with mountains of games, technology, and entertainment in the same room, I've probably indulged about three times in just one month. I didn't even know the PS5 and Xbox Series X released recently. For the first time, I feel like living under a rock has been a conscious decision. I feel like Marshall just answered this burning question for me, and I've been so confused ever since I first noticed. Thanks.

I don't have any rules about watching movies, playing videogames or reading books. They can be so much more than distractions, they can bring joy, reflection and rest for the mind. What I have is rules for studying. Every day, at least 3 hours, I'm studying art with my full attention. I think it is working for me.

I have a day job with lots of multi-tasking and interruption. Going to open life drawing is a double win. It is both drawing practice, and basically an adhd med- to have 3 hrs set aside to just focus on “this curves over here, this gets darker there” with no screens, no phone, no distraction.

Work shows up a lot in philosophies about what makes a meaningful life. creative outlets that come with a skill that needs cultivating seems to be the main activity a person can do to fulfill their personal potential. To become the greatest self, it's suggested to detach from the culture, isolate yourself and find strength in a self imposed discipline which incorporates that creative outlet. This process builds dedication to the self, overcoming fear of failure, problem solving and confidence. This was a good start to a larger conversation.

First of all, I love this podcast! I've been wanting something like this for years now! awesome job, you guys are great! As for productivity, only listen to podcast while you work if you're not trying to learn and just drawing for fun, at least that's how I do I do it. I do listen to music, but is usually something that complements what I'm working on, something that fits with the theme, usually instrumental stuff.

A huge help to me was a few years ago when I noticed that half my living space was dedicated to my xbox. I had my games and my tv all set up, but I drew on the bed like a hobo. I also played video games way too much. so what I did was pack up all my video games and my tv (Which was hard cause I JUST started Arkhan City) and packed it deep in the closet, vowing not to touch them for a month. by the time my month was up,the addiction was beat and I wound up giving the TV away, my xbox is set up in another room and I only play once or twice a week at most. I have a draft table table and a computer desk where my gaming setup used to be.

Anybody else with depression draw much? I've been doing it for a while, if I look where I've been and where I am today. I've obviously gotten better but I just never feel happy with what I have done. It never feels good. I'm used to this feeling of emptiness obviously but it can be hard to keep going knowing that nothing really satisfies you. Still, I keep coming back to drawing time and time again because I know I don't just want to do it, I need to do it. It's like there's something in my soul when I see a blank canvas it screams out that I need to put something on it. It sucks that I don't think I'll ever be "happy" drawing but there's something in me that makes me keep going.

I have that problem too. I feel like my art is never good enough to share with others. I think it's a biochemical thing. My theory is that some people are just genetically programmed to be happier than other people, thus they have an easier time being "ok" with sharing their work. My strategy is to just draw every time I have the opportunity. Always have a sketchbook on you and get into Dynamic Sketching with markers/ink pens. It's quantity over quality. All the best creators have the same thing in common; i.e. they produce a shit-load of work. Realizing that drawing is the best thing to do with your free-time goes a long way to getting over other addictions like video games and internet surfing. Read the War of Art audiobook on youtube, it goes over the concept of Resistance.

Michael Bebbington I don't think that that is just a coincidence. You were born for a reason- to create, to make art. Everyone is born for a reason and trust me if you have such a strong passion it will only help you in the future as long as you pursue it. I myself am having a bad period in my life that completely changed me and I am really passionate about art like it's all I do and think about all day, I'm a bit more confident in my drawings but if you're not then just know that if you really have such a tendency to draw you will get better and better every day. Little daily discoveries stacked up over a period of many years will be what makes you a skilled artist. By the way I do think you enjoy it, just maybe haven't realized it.

You guys, Rhystic Studies, Jacob Geller, all of which transmit very good vibes, yall do your videos with passion, you talk slowly, clearly but with a lot of energy and your conversations build up to very pleasing conclusions. Tips for drawing and painting environment when you don't have a lot of space: You can turn 2 normal chairs to a drawing horse if you put it next to each other. You can turn large kitchen cutting board into drawing desk if you screw another piece of wood under it to stand at the desired angle. if you made a hole in it for a cable you can fit keyboard under it, so you can put it in front of your computer. If you invest in buying Sienna Plein Air Pochade Box it would be ideal for traditional painting if you don't have a lot of space.

Loving this podcast so far, thank you guys! I really enjoyed this episode and your suggestions are very helpful. I thought it was cool you suggested meditation, that in particular helps me a lot with focus and discipline. Before I sit down to do my art, I always try and align myself and visualize a creative force channeling through my hand. That and just doing some deep breathing and focusing on being present for about 5 minutes.

Video Games inspire me a lot especially the artworks/artstyle, the story plot, and the world itself. And whenever I've got the motivation and inspiration while playing, I'll stop and think all what i've seen and remember then apply it when I draw. And i'm so happy that i've created characters, sceneries.. that doesn't make me stop and wants me to continue more. Make more and share it to fellow artists to encourage them to continue it. And I will support them what i can.

Indeed, you don't need a lot of space to set a creative environment. Removing distractions is the base of that pyramid. Some of the stuff I do: - Sign out from social media on my PC (having that extra step of signing in when you want a quick check is so bothersome that it helps to skip it) - Track my drawing time - Pick times of the day where family is asleep (less distractions) - Set my phone without Wi-Fi and far enough away that I need to get up from my desk to look at it - I do listen to music or podcasts when drawing, specially when the fam is up, since it helps to drown out the sounds. My partner plays online games, so there's a lot of conversation going on with his team, the earphones and music/podcasts help drown out those sounds and concentrate on my work in front of me.

  • @marigoann2755

I think that music only works if you're already familiar with the piece, otherwise you can't concentrate on absorbing something new while "in the zone" of drawing anything. If it's a piece that gives you inspiration for a picture, sure. If it's a new album you're hearing for the first time, it won't work. Same with audiobooks.

I agree with this. If I'm not listening to my regular music or trying to study something, I'll listen to music that puts me in the mood of what I'm drawing. If I want to convey lightheartedness I'll listen to soundtrack pieces from Disney or alike. Or if it's something angry or scary, I'll listen to horror themes and abrasive music.

Yep. You have to be familiar with what you're listening so that you pay no real attention to it but even then I reckon it will influence you artistically (mostly a good thing). Same reason I thought of listening to this podcast while drawing but decided against it and didn't draw. You made me less productive Stan!

  • @acidset

Better yet though, it's that either one of the two things have to be familiar. Meaning I think you can probably listen to music and podcasts you haven't heard beforehand if what you are working on is already established practice/drill or at least no working on new concepts. But I'd give more priority to just familiar music so that you are not distracted in the least.
