Boosting Bone Health to Prevent Injury and Speed Healing - Research on Aging

Bones are dynamic and continue to rebuild themselves, even as we age. Bone remodeling is supported by a healthy diet and by regular physical activity. Join Vicky Newman, MS, RDN to learn more about dietary choices that help calcium stay in our bones and out of our blood vessels to support both bone strength and arterial flexibility. Adequate calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K, and several trace minerals are all important, as is enough protein and alkaline minerals like magnesium. Our food, supplement, and activity choices help protect bone strength and structural flexibility to help prevent injury and speed healing. [10/2019] [Show ID: 35100]

Just watch out for Ankylosing Spondylitis + DISH when young. Once it overtakes you, it’s irreversible, and will fuse your spine. Get tested for HLA-B27 while young, and if positive, keep on top of it. No doctor will warn or tell you about this.

@@robh5748 you are right, boron is important trace mineral. 3g per day is good to include everyday with vit d, k2, magnesium, selenium and also strontium. I was prescribed adcal3 and alendronic acid. I stopped taking alendronic about 5 years ago. I have osteoporosis for about 10 years. About 4 years ago, dexa test showed osteopania on the right and osteoporosis on left side. I believe I feel stronger on the left compared to the right now. My dexa test is well overdue and should happen this year. Dr is right about pilates and yoga. My balance in yoga is notvaa good as it was more than 10 years ago, so I am working on this by weight lifting and hiit workout.

I'm 65 and had a fall few days ago, luckily I have no fracture over my swollen knee, just a superficial cut as I fell into a small drain. I realised that what I eat in my breakfast plays a vital role of preventing fractures to my knee and wrist as I have mostly green vegetables (homegrown) mixe with black fungus, gojiberŕy thrown into soup, also adding tumeric powder and mince meat and two eggs. Thus my stomach has no room for carbohydrates. I take carbohydrates later in the day with small amount,ie 1/4 of total food consumed, protein 1/4, vegetables and fruits intakes is half of total food amount.

Calcium is an antagonist of magnesium. Ca contracts muscles, Mg relaxes them. Our foods are grown with only N, P, K, so we don’t get the 93 minerals needed for healthy bones, tissues and function unless we consume 5 cups of green leafy vegetables a day that were grown in mineral rich soil fertilized with manure from grass pastures livestock.

@Victor Yatall I have recently been diagnosed with malnutrition and severe B1 thiamine deficiency due to an eating disorder. I was hospitalised for a month and re-fed slowly then put on a hospital formula called Fortisip which was so full of sugar that I just couldn’t tolerate it. The Dietitian has told me to consume lots of dairy and vegetables, Chicken and eggs yet I’m worried that this diet could be making my body too acidic? I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so I have always tried to follow an anti inflammatory diet and do intermittent fasting but the Dietitian says that I am malnourished and need to increase my calories. It’s so hard to know what to eat? I also have a lot of food allergies. Do you have any suggestions on how I can improve my nutrition, increase my protein intake and calorie count without the acidity that comes from all the dairy products?

Very good, useful information! A sidenote: the best, easiest and by all means cheapest way to get all the boron you need is to prepare a diluted solution of borax. The household borax is fine. I prepared the solution by weighing 10 grams of borax, dissolved it in water and dilute to 500 ml. One ml solution contains 2 mg of elemental boron. So, to have 10 mg of boron, use 5 ml of the solution. After one or two months arthritis pain is gone for 70% of people who suffer from it. Follow other advice given here to fight osteoporosis: Vit D3, vit K2, Magnesium, boron. Vit C and amino acids (eggs, meat) help with the formation of the bone matrix that holds calcium and magnesium. If possible, get calcium from food.

I have a problem with the acid/alkaline thing. Doesn't the body tightly regulate pH? As in, we die if that doesn't happen? I also can't remember reading that our hunter/gatherer ancestors had osteoporosis, and they ate plenty of meat. I would love to see more research done on inactivity, and also research done on gut health and healthy bones. The American food supply has been sprayed with glyphosate, pesticides, and Lord knows what else. There are more people complaining of things like IBS, SIBO, acid reflux, celiac disease, diverticulitis and other gut issues than ever before. I think it's plausible that we simply aren't absorbing nutrients as well as we should be, and as well as our ancestors did.

Does muscle strength matter when assessing an elder's bone health or more specific the protectiveness that muscles provide to the skeletal system?

  • @josephmanning1647

My bones are getting stronger now. I suffered from Low-Testosterone for over 25 years and my back disks suffered. 5 hormones can be used to reverse Osteoporosis and bone loss. These are: Testosterone, Progesterone, Vitamin D3 (yes it is a hormone), DHEA, Nandrolone and sometimes Estradiol (if it is too low). It is a shame that the medical community doesn't recognize that it is testosterone and progesterone which go much lower for women during perimenopause and menopause. While Estradiol can slow down bone loss, estradiol does not build bones. However, Testosterone, Progesterone and Nandrolone are the main hormones for helping stimulate the Bone Building Blood cells called Osteoblasts which are your bone forming cells. There is no reason any man or woman should get osteoporosis with the screening for and treating deficiencies in things like Testosterone and Progesterone. DHEA can also have an effect based on its neurological help and being a Top Level Hormone that is important in anti-aging of tissues. Nandrolone is also a bioidentical hormone that has strong impact on muscle preservation and working in conjunction with testosterone and progesterone for helping Osteoblasts to quickly reform bones.

@@reachvrable I'd like to point out that you can eat all the right foods and still get massive hormone dysregulation. There are so many things in the environment including steroids use on animals as well as food additives and plastics as well as endocrine disrupting drugs including birth control pills and synthetic hormones doctors just love to give while not warning patients of their long term consequences. Good diet may help and so does excercise....but once hormone dysregulation happens....diet and excercise along often won't fix the problem.

In one controlled trial, women either took a placebo or six grams of a combination of evening primrose oil and fish oil along with 600 milligrams of calcium every day for a total of three years. The women who took evening primrose, fish oil and calcium had zero spinal bone loss in the first 18 months and an impressive 3.1 percent increase in spinal bone mineral density during the last 18 months. Source Dr Draxe (when searching for primrose oil). I am surprised the presenter didn’t touch on omega.

And that you want the amount of elemental calcium that is in the supplement when counting your daily calcium...because some pills show the amount of citrate for example which is less than elemental. Supplements are very misleading! Know what you are looking for! Educate yourself by googling everything.

Because you need to replenish all nutrients, raw meat and raw milk plus bone marrow and raw eggs is the key to optimal health. Veggies are seasonal and most are man made like broccoli and coliflour for example which destroy the gut flora. Raw meat and raw milk and bone marrow will keep you stong and healthy just like all the indigenous tribes that only ate meat etc.

Overall I agree with most of what's being presented, but there are two things she said that are simply incorrect. First, it is true that dairy consumption is correlated with bone loss, but the mechanism is not that the body leaches minerals from our bones. That has been debunked. Secondly, it doesn't matter when you eat your protein. Your body recycles it and combines it to synthesize the proteins it needs. Protein is used as an energy source only as a last resort after carbohydrate stores are depleted. Eat your protein when you want. Health is more about eliminating the toxic foods than anything else. It's subtractive, not additive.

She is a dietitian, and they tend to think in terms of nutrient-dense foods, which is most effective way of feeding people: to make every calorie count. She is also recommending that you informally track your protein so you don’t over-consume it, because to do that is to displace other foods and nutrients that you need more of, particularly in those people who wish to build up bone density. Animal protein in particular is acidic, which disrupts the optimal alkaline-acidic chemical balance that our bodies need to maintain optimal bone health. She did not say anything about “the body leaching minerals from our bones.” Academics choose their words carefully. If what she is saying is unclear, I suggest you send her a friendly email. However, I agree that she could give us more background information as to the purpose of describing protein so thoroughly. I tend to to think that this lecture is not the complete lecture, or that her audience has some sort of specialized knowledge. At any rate, I would not nitpick every detail of her presentation , because she clearly has plenty of reference material to back her up. Do you? And what are your credentials?
