Boost Bike Range Test - Did it perform as they claimed it would?

You've seen the installation of the Boost kit • Boost Bike - Power Yo... so it's time to test their claim of 30 miles range. An average rider on an average bike - just what this kit was designed for, but can it perform to expectations? We set out on a 50 mile ride with the controls set permanently to Eco. We would run the motor at this setting until the battery expired. How far did we get?

    Hi Roy, in regards to having extra weight on the front forks I should think it's absolutely fine, just think about all the forces going through when you brake. Great video keep up the good work.

    I use a Trek Allant+ with a Bosch mid drive motor as a shopping and general run-about. I am a fan of the range in km, but I take into account hills,headwinds etc before I leave home to make sure I get back. I’ve run out of power once (I failed to check) and the experience of riding into a headwind with a few kg of groceries, plus the drag of the motor was a brutal reminder. I hope the lady has many happy rides with her new found power😊

    very good Roy and Mary. I've got a cytronext e bike conversion which is very good. However two days ago I had a nasty accident after the bracket connecting the head tube to the front forks suddenly sheared off, with no warning, leaving me splat on the road after going over the handlebars. Luckily I was going slowly at the time. NHS Ambulance staff and St George's Hospital, Tooting were fantastic. My bike is a Marin Fairfax 2 2021 model. Bike is a write off so will be looking at getting Boost instead next time.

Roy i joined your channel ages ago i know you ride analogue bikes but i still watch you as you are a breath of fresh air to us on two wheels and as im an ebike obsessive and have been riding them for well over twenty years, i fully endorse anyone who is scared of getting one that this product is Excellent! I dont own one but as we have just seen Marys confidence has risen that should be proof in itself that these Ekits are essential for boosting power so that the rider can enjoy their journeys without over taxing their energy levels! Lets hope Boost gets the recognition they deserve! Great Video i hope KZread posts this on more viewers feeds as things like this product will get many unfit people active again and that is not a bad thing !

    Thanks, Roger, but I’ll correct one thing - I do ride e as well 😀 I have a Ribble CGR Ale that I use mainly for guided rides, as I need to carry more kit. I involved Mary as I didn’t want to compare the Boost kit with the purpose built Ribble. However, I’m now thinking this could be its equal. Once the through axle version is launched they will send one for me to fit to my Titanium Tempest. If it works for me the way it’s working for Mary I may well sell my Ribble 🫢

    Congrats to Mary and well done to Boost Bike. WRT suggested improvements, I noticed in the first video that the rim didn't have a wear tell-tale. Many of these motors are very likely to be fitted to older bikes (e.g. mine), in which case a tell-tale is a great comfort. WRT charging points, on longer rides I simply bung my charger in the saddle-bag along with the spare battery and charge over lunch - cafés and restaurants here in France are very accommodating in that way. I can appreciate, though, that carting a hulking great 3-pin plug might be a disincentive. (Equally, allowing customers to charge their batteries for an hour of so is a great way for a restaurant to keep them eating.)

    Roy, thank goodness that I saw Boost Part One as I was on the verge, with no disrespect to Ribble, of booking a test ride on their CGR AL e. I now know that I can keep my Orro Terra, possibly change the 28mm tyres for something fatter, and still end up with something which, after conversion, will be no heavier than a new CGR AL e. Then I can begin to enjoy my favourite rides again and, as personal fitness / myocarditis /vanity dictates, I will have the option to reinstate the bike to its original unpowered state. Also, not having made my gravel bike redundant, I might, guilt free, just buy the Ribble Endurance SL e for the hell of it. Thank you again. Your video came at just the right time. Yours, Derek

    On the subject of unreliable headwinds and tailwinds, I can recall the advice from when I did a bit of inshore sailing that, if one wanted to make progress to windward, one should take the easiest tack first. If then the wind changed it would likely be to one's advantage whereas if the wind remained unchanged one had lost nothing. I know it's not quite the same with cycling because, whereas cyclists can wear themselves out on the outward leg, sailing yachts don't suffer fatigue. However, I've lost count of the number of tail winds that I thought were in the bank only to find that the wretched wind had changed!

    Hi Roy - thanks for this update - one question I have though is for stronger riders won't they be getting up to speeds over the 15.5 mph speed limit and so cutting the motor out? Do you have this problem with your Ribble CGR ebike or does it mean you just have the chance to ride further?

  • @RideWithRoy

    @RideWithRoy

    9 ай бұрын

    Great question! This is the beauty of e assist over heavy e bikes. Assist helps the rider quickly reach the cut off speed and then, as the bike is light enough, stay there. They also make light work of hills, so saving rider energy. The result is, as you say, the ability to ride further. I rode over 100 miles with the Ribble by using power only when needed.

    Hi Roy thank-you for part 2 thanks for an honest review clearly Mary is enjoying the boost kit. If you speak to Mary again I would love to know what she thinks of the kit without power. I would prefer to leave the wheel on all the time and yes I know its not difficult to replace the wheel to go out on short trip but to be honest all I want to do is grab the bike and ride it so having that rear hub motor still on without power does it make a major different to her bike? And final question sorry Roy do you have videos of alternatives or could you suggest an alternative? Switchkit like you said in your video and when answering my comment in part 1 the range isn't enough. 8 miles is great in a city but us hilly rural folks no chance one way is all I'd get and I really do like going home 😂 Another thing to mention for folks warching is on their website Boost do have a map showing plenty of Uk based cycle shops that have or will fit these kits.. I think the answer is that she said it because she can. My guess is that novelty will wear off and she will leave it fitted. Of course, just removing the battery would save 1.5 kg. Unbelievably, she doesn’t watch my videos 🤔 but I’ll also her to answer your question direct. No, I haven’t tried any others. Hi there. I’ve ridden down the road on it without power and I don’t see anyone having a problem leaving the wheel on and the bike feeling good to ride. The only reason I change mine is because I’m practising climbing the hills for tours that don’t have electricity! I have bought the wheel as a social aid so I can go out with my friends as they are so much faster and I’m really slow. It also gets me fit and helps me to lose weight keeping it on eco so a win/win for me! I am VERY fussy about what I ride and I think this is great with or without the power on. Mary ❤

    Disappointed that I have to explain myself but will. The discount is only available to viewers that come through this channel, and the link is both a way of controlling that and demonstrating the value Boost get from this review. It costs me a lot to bring you these reviews and I’ll be happy to accept anything a supplier wishes to offer, but in this case my statement is 100% true. No worries. But I really think for any discount link that is set up in your name, it's wise to explain when you mention the link that you get no money back from that link. It was the way you mentioned the link as a last min thing. I've not been watching your videos long enough to build up trust. There will be others like me who have doubts. No need to be disappointed Roy, please see this as useful feedback. It was hard to mention it to be honest as I thought I would get some throwback. But I did as I felt it would help clear it up. I am sure these videos are expensive to make with the price of go pros etc etc and I did enjoy the video a lot. And look forward to watching more. I personally would not honestly mind if you did get money back from a code if totally front of course. But glad to know that you are a man of your word. That is why I asked, so you could clear it up to others and myself who may have a slight doubt. I don't think those who express their personal genuine doubts should be seen in negative way, but in a positive one, as can learn from it and make the process clear in future.

    I was initially disappointed, Andrew, but then I reflected that you don’t know me so I can’t be offended at your question. And as you say, others may have also had the question but not asked it. I would never state that I don’t make anything from sales as a result of a video because I would clearly state if I did. If you check the comments on my Triban video, for example, you will see I clearly stated that using the link would provide the channel with a small commission - although none materialised 😀 YT also have some strict rules around this and to fall foul of them could cause some problems. I’m fortunate as I make these videos because I enjoy it and don’t need to make money out of them. But rest assured, if I do receive a free product it will be clearly notified as will money making affiliate links. Incidentally, Boost Bike doesn’t even have an affiliate scheme. So no offence taken and I appreciate your suggestion.

    The battery from this boost kit is only 6ah. The ecco mode must use very little power in asist to give you a range of 50 miles. 6ah realistically only gives you about 10- 15 miles at best in the city.

  • @RideWithRoy

    @RideWithRoy

    Well, whatever it is, it did it, as you saw. Of course, you have to take our word for the headwind, as even I can’t show you that 😀 However, Mary has since ridden 48 miles with 2320’ feet of climbing and still had power at the end. Mary isn’t a strong rider so I’m expecting even better when I try it on the light Titanium gravel bike.

  • @HDsharp

    @HDsharp

    @@RideWithRoy it's not realistic to use so little power to commute on ebikes. It makes very little difference. You need at least level 2 mode to make the journey stress free. Doing on ECCO on the boost system, you may as well do without because you're carrying the extra weight of the kit 😂.. Then if you use a higher mode you definitely will need to make the journey more comfortable, like I've said before, you're only going to get a max of 15miles on a 6ah Battery. And I'm being very generous. I'm an experienced ebiker I know about the capacity of batteries. No point in having a 50 mile range with the boost system when you have to put in 90% of the effort 😂

  • @RideWithRoy

    @RideWithRoy

    9 ай бұрын

    @@HDsharp it depends on the weight of the bike. These kits are designed to be fitted to standard, relatively light, bikes. I would agree with needing eco just to shift a heavy bike and rider, but not the case here. The fact is that Mary couldn’t manage more than 30 miles unassisted. Now, with the same bike she is able to make 50 miles. I am also an experienced e bike rider and know that the 50 miles I can get from my 15kg Ribble wouldn’t be possible on a heavy mid drive e bike. The big difference is that with e assist the bike will be partly powered by pedalling, whereas the fully powered mid drive e bike is too heavy to provide any meaningful human assistance. Whatever your argument, how do you explain the result?

  • @dereklund2321

    @dereklund2321

    @@HDsharp Ignoring the comparison between gradient profiles, your fitness and Mary's, the combined weight of you and your bike and Mary and her bike and the aerodynamic efficiency of the bike and rider combination and without inspecting your maths, I would argue that there is every point for a reluctant rider to be provided even with only 10% of the effort if it turns out that that's all that is required. After all, one of the many points of cycling is to give yourself a thorough workout.
