Boomboat assembling a lograft at Jordan River on Vancouver Island.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Boomboat working at Jordan River estuary at evening high tide 9th June 2012. Viewed from the highway bridge footpath, cool little boat (the other must be a tug for the rafts) and a floating winch doing it's thing too, interesting evening for us.

Not exactly sure what he's doing, but he seems to be extremely good at it:-) Very agile running across those logs too.

Totally awesome boom man. The "floating winch" is for securing the swifter wires among other uses.

I wonder if he is also sorting while moving logs into the booms. I see they are debarked so that must have happened before they were dumped. These booms are then floated downriver to the mill? Thanks for posting.

He is a log cowboy rounding up his herd. Each of the big logs can weigh tons, see they are very valauble.

He assembles the individual logs that have been felled by the loggers into a raft, and the raft is then taken downriver to a mill. Just sending individual logs downriver would be time consuming (and time is money) and a hazard to navigation if any got past the mill and out into navigable waters. You can see the next phase of that kind of operation here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oaWH09ChfKutpNI.html

I dont get it, surely the cost of fuel and maintanance on that boat plus wages etc must out way the cost of the timber.
