Books that shaped my theological PhD

Several viewers have asked about the books behind me in my videos, so I thought I’d take you through the books on my shelf and share some that have been personally impactful. My library is not particularly remarkable, and most of my books are digital, but there are some books on the shelves behind me that have played a formative role in my growth in Christ. In this video, I’ll share some of these with you.
Do you have a book that has impacted you? Leave a comment below and let me know!

    Read the little book "Abraham's Four Seeds" by John G. Reisinger, if you want to understand the problems with both Reformed Covenant Theology and modern Dispensational Theology. They both ignore or pervert the New Covenant fulfilled by the blood of Christ at Calvary. New Covenant Whole Gospel: Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him. He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36) Watch the KZread video “The New Covenant” by Bob George

    Thanks Darryl for sharing the contents of your bookshelves with us. A good library is a real priviledge mostly enjoyed by the English speaking developed world. Perhaps in a changing world where digital takes the place of physical the love of books is not appreciated by as many as before. I really appreciated that you have given year long scholarships of your Courses to people from developing countries. Perhaps a future project could be to assist pastors / theologians in poorer countries to obtain a basic physical library.

  • @bma

    @bma

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question. I actually did a lot of work on covenants in my dissertation and have a nuanced view. In short I believe that Gentry and Wellum have not adequately addressed the purpose of a covenant (actually few works do) and the implications that has for biblical theology. I hold that covenants are a necessary consequence of the fall (due to the lack of trust introduced by the fallibility of man or the corrupted nature of the mind), and therefore prior to the fall agree than God makes decrees, but does not enter into covenants. This is a nuance though, not a huge area of disagreement, but I think it is a safeguard against making too much of pre-fall "covenants" which I think some covenantal thinkers are guilty (if that's the right word) of. That doesn't address the hermeneutical issues, but it might go some way to helping you understand where I'm at.

    One of the things I've been studying is the concept of eternity and forever in the Bible (olam and aion primarily). It's not always as cut-and-dry as it is presented by most preachers and teachers. I'm finding that there's so much more to it than simply translating the word. Context is everything, especially when a whole view of the Bible is taken into account. I'm seeing now that God's wrath is punitive for the sake of being remedial and His "eternal" promises are based on the latter. Eternity only applies to the Father. When it is used in reference to creation it is always bound by time, even if that time is unfathomable or unforeseeable. We can have eternity in our hearts, but it is God indwelling us. We will never be, eternal, at least, not in the same sense as God is. Some of my favorite tools are the Theological Dictionaries of the Old and New Testaments because they show how these words were used biblically and extrabiblically. Your videos have actually encouraged me to learn Koine Greek and ancient Hebrew (at least, what we believe about these languages, considering they are "lost" languages rediscovered, or perhaps even reinvented according to modern scholarship). For example, I don't trust the vowel points in the Masoretic Text because they don't seem to line up with what I've found to be the truth, especially in relation to the name of God and His Son. I don't think I'm being biased here, at least I hope not. I've discovered that there is often bias in scholarship, even if it is not conscious bias. Even the manuscripts have some amount of bias in them, whether by mistake or by imposition. How far must one go to get to the truth? Do I need to compare the thousands of manuscripts for myself? No, prayer goes a long way in this department and for those who receive the love of the truth, it is God who brings the increase.

  • @bma

    There is a lot in your comment, but I agree there is a lot to learn. One thing I've found is that the more I learn, the more I realise that I don't know enough. There needs to be a humility in our learning to lean on what others have worked through before us. Keep going! Learning Greek is really helpful on that journey!

    @@bma I appreciate the response, the reason I ask is because the commentary set I’m using right now to go through Paul, the author who was to write an edition regarding Ephesians was accused of plagiarism and was stricken from that particular series, the Pillar New Testament Commentary

    What books of theology would you recommend for people with low money🥲

    With little money, you might want to consider some of the public domain materials on monergism.com. There is a lot of good material there for free. www.monergism.com/topics/reformed-theology

    Should I read that book on Calvin? Is it beneficial for me?

    Which book are you referring to? Is that the one by Stephen Lawson? If so, it is a really easy to read biography that is worth reading to get an overview of his life, but Lawson focuses more on Calvin's preaching. For a fuller overview of Calvin, you'd probably like one of T. H. L. Parker's biographical works.

    You were a bit fast moving about with that phone for folk who wanted to look at your books. I liked the quick reviews of the books you liked. Though saying this one is good isn't helpful if we can't see what it is. It's alright, you seemed embarrassed that you had multiple copies of some stuff, don't be ashamed of having doublers I am sure we all have doublers, in fact I think I have a triplet

    You should read St Thomas Aquinas's summa theologia and all the works of St Augustine. Calvins Institutes involves a fabricated theology of redemption, the sacraments and the church. Calvinism is not from the church fathers, the bible or church councils. Faith flone is not found in the bible or church history simply because there is no faith in heaven and therefore the elect are not justified by faith alone.
