Love the background of this video!
This was a great topic! I read the first 150 pages of “the blade itself” and DNF’d it - just didn’t get why it was so hyped at the time. I’ve come back to it a year later and am enjoying it immensely. Sometimes for reasons unknown things don’t click the first time around I guess.
I just started Strange the Dreamer. (Thanks to you. I never would have known about it otherwise.) Within the first few chapters I suddenly realized, "Oh! This is what people mean by prose!" I have never read a book with such pretty writing before.

Bone Shard Daughter was compelling from the jump. I loved it and Bone Shard Emperor. Give me book 3 now! 😊

I agree. It was not slow.

I dnf'ed. Now I regret!
I love fantasy books with a great map. I like reading and then looking at the map. Some of my favorite books DO NOT have a good map and that made it a difficult slow start for me. I would prefer a G Maps Version of First Law, Malazan, and Stormlight which was available online.... so I could zoom down and see where Kaladans Fathers house was or a certain location where "The Bloody Nine" killed someone or an area in Malazan 7 cities. Maybe go to a street view and turn on a fantasy cam and watch what famous characters come in and out of a Tavern in Darujhistan. I think we should start a Website that worked like this and charge a monthly fee and we could be rich. It is my Opinion that Lord of the Rings, Shannara Chronicles and The Witcher Game III had great Maps though... for their time because they were made in "Olden Times".
So glad "The Blade Itself" is on this list, since I plan on starting First Law after finishing Wheel of Time and squeezing in some Discworld beforehand. I always thought that, as fantasy readers, we should have a bit more patience with slow starts and don't fully understand when someone commits to a 10+ book series, or at least a series with more than 3 books and more than 600 pages per book and then, after 100-150 pages DNFs it because it's too slow. I mean, the world building takes some time to unfold, as do the character relationships and not everything has to be full speed ahead in terms of action.
While it took awhile for the story to get going in The Blade Itself, I found it to be a pretty fast paced read with plenty of action. The characters were the main highlights of this book
I like slow books so no problem at all here xD As long as I like the writing, characters or atmosphere I am in. I did give the Blade Itself 4 stars and never got why people complain so much. i saw the potential from the start. Same for the Ninth Rain.
Stormlight Archive really took me a while to love but now it’s one of my favorite series 🔥 Oathbringer is my fave and I need to read Rhythm of War soon
I think Throne of Glass series by SJM is also one of those books in which you have to wait for real plot to begin. But once it starts catching up there is no time but to keep the pace with the story.

I'd 100% agree with that. I love the series, but the start is definitely a little rough and slow going.
I’d recommend anyone interested in the first law trilogy to consider the trilogy as one long book. I had all three audiobooks on audible so I was committed but I was questioning what all the praise was for after finishing book one. By the time I finished the last book I was fully on board and now consider it to be one the best trilogies I’ve ever read. Everything that happens in that last book was foreshadowed in book one and the way it all plays out is just brilliant. The follow up standalone books are also incredible. Lots of fans really love Best Served Cold but I think The Heroes might be my favorite of his books. It’s probably the most cinematic book I’ve read in recent years.
I recently finished The Winnowing Flame trilogy. Why did I wait so long to pick these books up? It was soooo good!!! 🥰
I love how your makeup matches the top half of your shelves and your shirt matches the bottom half 🥺🥰 great vid as always 🤩
Strangely, I didn't think of the biginning of "A darker shade of magic" as slow... For me It was a really good time from the very start! Now I'm reading "Strange the dreamer", and I immediatly fell in love with the writing, the characters and the world!! Every time I read a book that has been raccommanded by Elliot I'm sure I'm going to love It!
Thanks for this video - helpful! I think people feel the same about Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. Personally I was drawn in from the very beginning, but I can understand how some would be impatient with the pace for quite awhile, and I think the action really gets going about 1/3-1/2 way through the trilogy.
I truely appreciate your perspective on books and stories and all related. You really provide enough information for the viewer to make thier own opinion with the given information. Thanks very much. Love from Saudi Arabia. I'm muslim and I love it.
Great idea for a video, thank you ! If you know more such books, go ahead and make another video like this one.
I hear SO MUCH FROM EVERYONE from book influencers to personal friends how much I’ll love stormlight. I’ve had way of kings for more than a year. I am sooo intimidated by it! Idk why, it’s just a couple hundred longer than Priory and I devoured that 😂

Do it do it do it! I’ve read TWoK 4 times and I’m still excited for my yearly rereads!
Strange the Dreamer is so worth it 👌🏻 Stormlight Archive definitely needs time but its so good Love slow books tbh so this was great for some recommendations
I listened to The Way of Kings on audiobook and when I first started, I was all sorts of confused by the intro, by the amount of made up words, and the characters...I started to wonder if I was in over my head! Then I got into it (fairly easily, I think) and I have not regretted it! I've not read any of the other books you talked about, but some sounded interesting! Thanks for the suggestions!
I feel like Fullmetal Alchemist was great from the start! The depth wasn’t explained in the beginning, but I knew it was there and super intrigued to find out more.
I love this video concept! Sometimes just knowing that a book will pick up eventually is enough to help me settle in and enjoy the slow build-up more (rather than questioning if that's all I can ever expect from it). Sword of Kaigen is another one that had a slow start but was more than worth it for me.
I'm glad you mentioned The Blade Itself because if it wasn't for the massive hype about this book trilogy I don't think I would've continued after the first book because of how little happens in that first book. Yes the characters are intriguing but.. they're not doing anything in that first book and the world-building is very bare boned. This is why I doubt The First Law would make a good TV adaptation because it doesn't hook you in the first book. I think it helps if you try to see the entire trilogy as one book and the first book is just part 1 of the story because the trilogy is worth reading and I appreciated the first book more after finishing the trilogy when I realised that a lot of the plot is there but it's in the background.
I like your bookshelf arrangement; sorting your books by colour gives everything a nice contrast. Very magical🪄
This was such a helpful video! There are a few that I want to read and I'm glad to know they'll have slow starts.
I just finished the Shades of Magic trilogy this week and absolutely LOVED them. I personally didn't find book one slow, but I know some have. Cannot wait for the fourth book.
It was because of you that I watched Vinland Saga and Castlevania so thank you 😊
Agreed. The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner is a prime example of a slow start. The story picks up the pace in the rest of the series.
Good to know about The Blade Itself, I keep saying I am going to read it and then keep putting it off lol I guess I just need to dive in! Bone Shard Daughter is SO good, and I agree it does take a bit to get really into it but so worth the payoff!

I was very luke warm on The Blade Itself all the way through and almost didn't continue the series, but I did really like the second book, and mostly liked the third. I mostly listened to the series on audio book and enjoyed the narrator, so maybe consider giving that a try.
Jade city started so slow! Its such an amazing series but wow that first half of book one took some work.
Since Full metal Alchemist got 2 anime adaptations, the first being faithful then going anime original after a while, and the second only following the manga storyline, the second kind of condensed the manga accurate content already covered in the first one, so that accounts for some of the early weirdness in the Brotherhood adaptation.
Yes Shades of Magic is one of my favorite series! But I know so many people who DNFed either in book one or two because of the slow start. Kell & Delilah had me at page one tbh but it's a common complaint. I'd also say The Priory of the Orange Tree, which I think you didn't make it through El, has a very slow start & is intimidatingly large but has a world that is so richly & carefully built & characters so worth knowing by the end. But alot of people struggled to get there
I watched fullmetal alchemist brotherhood because of you. And yes, i love it so so much. It's getting deeper and more complex over time and the Charakters are all very lovable.
I loved "Strange the Dreamer" and "Muse of Nightmares". I'm also a huge fan of Joe Abercrombie and Brandon Sanderson. I purchased the Winnowing Flame series on your recommendation. I'm on the second book and loving it,' Thanks
I’m halfway done reading book 3 of First Law. I think the series actually hit the ground running with action and then slowed way down by book 2. Book 1 is definitely my fav so far.
i've been putting off Castlevania, but I really want to watch it. It's been a long time since I've played the game. City of Dusk sounds super interesting!
Fullmetal Alchemist followed the manga pretty well until it caught up with the manga. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood started several arcs in so that it could just straight into the action and then it followed the manga until they completed the show. Both are really good, so I highly recommend both anime.
The concept of the slow start is intriguing.....younread hundreds of pages in hopes of a big payoff....that the time put in was worth it.....some would argue that there needs to be a better editor....LOL....Great recommendations
Grace of Kings by Ken Liu is one I would say fits this category 📚☺
The whole house and magic system thing in Stormlight Archive reminds me of The Gilded Wolves
I NEED to read Strange the dreamer soon . You make me way too much excited about it!!!
Thank you for the heads up! Strange the dreamer is my next book tbr. Stay awesome
I actually found stormlight easy to get into because I found the world so interesting. I think if you don’t find the world interesting, the first 300 pages will be difficult.
Thanks for the Broken Binding Link! Happy 4th!!
I tried reading ‘way of kings’ two times and at halfway I couldn’t continue. But ‘mistborn’ and ‘Warbreaker’ (my fave book by him) were easy to get into and very fun!
Lol when you started describing a Darker Shade of Magic I was like wait...what DID happen in that book trilogy? 🤣
Can every BookTuber please pick up this brilliant video idea!
I don't know if it is something I would recommend but Cry Macho was very slow for the first 5 to 6 chapters (and picked up a little bit until the last two chapters). Then it just ended.
City of Dusk is on track to be my favorite book of the year so worth it
This was super helpful!
I'm reading The Shadow of The Gods right now and that also has a very slow burn start, but I am intent on finishing it!
Love, love, LOVED. Jen Williams but I could not get it in Canada.
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about Queens of Innis Lear lol
Love your content :) would you mind sharing where you got you your bookshelves from?
Ah agree with fullmetal so much you have to stick with it for just a little
I rarely DNF books cause I really try to read books I know I would be interested in but I tried reading The Family and within the first 10-20 pages I knew it wasn’t for me. Absolutely hated the writing style. When you know you know
bahaha 😂 i love that basically the blade itself is, just read the book, the entire book.
Great video!
Omg! I love all of the broken binding editions! Are you getting the Winnowing Flame ones? I feel like they should send them to you for free with all the hype and publicity you've given that series for so long lol
Piranesi, I loved it, but I heard that some people almost dnfed it in the beginning
Hi, from South Africa, do you plan on reading keeper of the night? It would be a delight to hear your opinions.
I didn't think a darker shade of magic was slow at all... i just found it pretty mediocre and it didn't really make me want to read the whole series. So I guess that could count as a DNF for me. Also Malazan, that book (series) breaks my mind, but I WILL finish it one day!
Which of these books would you recommend using a notebook to help keep track?
I keep looking for The Ninth Rain in audio format but it isn't available in the US. I even tried usin my VPN to get them, it didn't work.
Hello, is there information anywhere about the different Patreon tiers? ☺️
Who's Brandon Sanderson? I liked First Law, it was great.
I recently DNF'd the binding because it felt like nothing was happening
I want to read the bone shard daughter so bad 😩
This is why I can't DNF bc I am afraid I am missing out!! Like what if it pickes up 😅🤣
There are two POV characters in The Bone Shard Daughter who are trying to get their memories back :D
What is the end music
Oof, Castlevania is so good. SO good.
Did anyone else really dislike castlevania season 3?? I hated how most of it ended up being a complete waste of time
Six of crows and its first chapter 🫠
So did you finally read Tolkien or what
Haha I actually liked the beginning of Strange the Dreamer most and then disliked it once the story got started
Strange the Dreamer quite possible takes the cake as the most god damned boring and slow ass fucking start in the history of fantasy books.
Sanderlanche🤣🤣
I lub you

Oh, I know of one. OF DEMONS & MEN by C.E.OCHEJA. The closer you get to the end, the more you love it. Its my favorite book of all time. I don't read a lot either but this got me.
