I live in Yokohama, work in Tokyo and always hunt for book shops. Book collecting and buying is still a huge activity in Japan. Much more affordable and in better condition (2nd hand) than in oz.

I love your vlogs! They are always beautiful, always peaceful, always so thoughtfully put together. A lot of youtube channels I'll put on and then do something else while it plays in the background. I always sit and watch yours because they are so aesthetic.

Oh this was SUPER helpful. It's difficult to find great guides to bookstores (especially ones selling secondhand books) in Tokyo which sell English language literature. Your recent video about Japanese book recommendations was excellent; you started your list with a few of my favourites so that was the sign that I needed to press pause and get my bedside notepad and write down everything else you recommended 😆👍📗🖋. I will be in Tokyo soon and am very grateful that I found this video. Last time I was in Tokyo I only discovered one bookstore which stocked translated works and their section was very small and limited. THANK YOU CHRISTY!! 💖🙏

Thanks for sharing this! I'll be visiting Japan in October! If I got this right, the best places for translated Japanese books are T-Site and Books Kinokunya Tokyo? I have this edition of 1Q84 as well. It's so pretty. Have not read it yet though lol.

Yep! The best place for translated books is Books Kinokuniya Tokyo! T-SITE has a great selection, but not quite as good as that particular Kinokuniya store. However, I do really recommend you go because it's beautiful 😊

Bookworm here visiting Tokyo for the first time this fall! Thanks for the awesome book store recommendations! This video was super helpful! How easy would you say it is to travel around Tokyo visiting different bookstores? Would one need an entire day like you did in this video? I would love your thoughts on this as we are planning our days in Tokyo in more detail soon. And if we only have time for, like, two or three bookstores, which ones would you recommend we go to?

I think to properly enjoy it, you'd need the whole day. I think I got to Jimbocho at 11am and left the final bookstore at 6:30pm. However, if you were speedy at each place I think you could do it much quicker. The trains in Tokyo are amazing and really easy. The signs are all in English. The screens (MOST of the time have English) and the announcements are in English. You just get an IC card (metro card), and you can use Google Maps to figure everything out. If you only have time for two bookstores, I'd reommend: #1 Books Kinokuniya Tokyo (right next to Shinjuku Station, above the Nitori) #2 Daikanyama T-SITE Happy travels 💛

If loving to visit bookstores in deep nights, you should visit Eslite Flagship in Taipei, which is open 24-7 & has a lot of books in English. Pity they’re going to close it at the end of 2023…

Japan is a bit different culturally with photo taking. In this context, I think it's because they're worried about the authors'/publishers' intellectual property. Also, people there are really big on blurring others' faces (especially children), not taking photos of strangers, and not sharing IP they don't have the right to. It's just different to the West. I actually emailed T-SITE to specifically ask if I could film and showed them examples of my other videos, and they came back with a very strong 'no' 😅
