Book review: US Black Metal: A Revolution of Identity in American Black Metal. LET'S TALK METAL

Ойын-сауық

I recently finished reading Daniel Lake's volume on the American black metal scene. My opinions differ from a couple of the other reviews that I've read on this book, so here is my take on its strengths and flaws.

Absu are a top 10 favorite black metal band for me and honestly there probably the only USA band that would be in my top 25 if I had to think about it.

It's funny how Absu often gets forgotten about. Their sound was always changing and hard to pin down

Moribund Records also has a lot of NS/White Power ties over the years, so that could be a big reason why.

MA & Deicide definitely had the satanic angle in their lyrics yet you never hear them mentioned in BM lists much. Many people seem to list later 80s bands as Death Metal even if they had the satanic image that was the only real requirement for BM during the 80s.

Other than some questionable demo bands that could not be considered Black Metal in any real sense, there were bands like Lucifer's Hammer, Toten (later Profanatica), and Goatlord all starting to put out demos around 1987-88. Though even these are pretty rudimentary. NME is what many call the 'American Venom'. Which makes sense, as neither band could really be considered what we called Black Metal today, but fits firmly in the First Wave category due to the style its played in. I would hesitate to call NME a thrash band, but more so a Venom/Celtic Frost hybrid child.

That's a fair take on NME; they're a bit hard to pin down but a Venom comparison is warranted

Love the book reports. This one went on my list as this is a scene I’m really diving into lately. Down side is - school work has me so bogged down, I just put away the Fates Warning book. Ha

It's an interesting scene. Right when many of these bands started coming together was a time that I checked out of new releases for several years, so there's a lot of this stuff I don't know much about

Haven’t read this book but it seems interesting eventhough it looks like another one of those scene reports of the last years. Weakling’s album is one of my favourites. Ordo Obsidium follows in their footsteps. Nightbringer’s Ego dominus tuus is one of the best of the 2010’s. Early USBM has a more death metal approach. Masochist were great, very feral and blasphemous. Ritual also was awesome. And I’m a big fan of GBK. Whatever people may think of them the music speaks for itself.

Most of those you mentioned are covered in the book (Nightbringer, Weakling, GBK, etc). It does have a scene report feel to it, but the author is up front re: that is the book's intent- to cover what happened in the scene up to the time of publication.

While the usbm scene is something I'm not to familiar with it's always interesting to hear your opinions on music books alan if I'm honest with black metal i tend to lean more towards the progressive style like latter day enslaved and borknagar I'm guessing the US style tends to be more raw and lo fi in the vein of early darkthrone?

The US scene definitely started there but I think in the early 2000s it found its own direction with stuff like Leviathan, Xasthur, Ludicra, etc. Now you've got stuff ranging from Panopticon to Darkthrone clones and everything in between

American first wave black metal bands would be 1. Von 2. NME 3. Slayer (show no mercy to hell awaits) 4. satan's host (think American merciful fate) 5. Necrovore 6. Order from Chaos 7. nunslaughter 8. Baphomet (from Salt Lake City) 9. toten (early Profanatica) 10. possessed (albeit they're more linked to death metal) 11. exorcist (virgin steel side project)

Interesting list! I think Von is the only one of those the book touched on. I'm surprised early Slayer isn't mentioned more often in the context of 80s Black Metal. They seem to fit the bill much more strongly than early Running Wild, yet everyone always wants to call RW black metal but then they don't mention Slayer. Weird :) I forgot about Satan's Host; I never got into them due in part to seeing too many people take 'Metal From Hell' Ultra Seriously when it seemed like a one-off, tongue-in-cheek project.

Satan's Host did become a bit more of a serious band over time and their sound evolved into more of a modern black metal sound later

Agreed Hattori. There's too much criminal and racist stuff in the scene to just ignore/gloss over, but when you mention it there's gonna be a lot of folks who complain about you bringing that stuff up.

Include bands like that and folks complain. Exclude them and a different group of folks complain. Kind of a no-win situation with a band that polarizing :(
